Kenyan on Mars: Space travel dreams in Nairobi | Africa Direct Documentary

The idea of space travel has been a childhood dream for Isaac Gathu and the idea of travelling to Mars inspires this Kenyan space enthusiast. An IT technician and businessman by profession, he is also the founding president of the Mars Society of Kenya and an "analogue astronaut", someone who simulates space missions on Earth. Isaac's passion is both serious and at times tongue-in-cheek. He wears his homemade space suit in public to encourage awareness of space travel, and he prepares himself physically and mentally through his analogue activities for his distant dream of one day being a Kenyan on Mars.
Lydia Matata is a screenwriter and filmmaker from Kenya. She has written on drama series for Netflix and Showmax and her latest documentary film Utapata Mwingine won the Best Emerging Filmmaker award at the UN Women’s Global Voices Film Festival.

I am Nigerian living in South Africa. Every time I open my laptop to watch international news, its always Kenya this, Kenya that, Kenya everywhere. Why are they always trending. They even inspired my country's youth to advocate for new governance. I read from TikTok that they also inspired the Bangladesh University students to advocate for their job rights. Kenya, much respect from me and all thw world. You have officially overtaken Nigeria. But we are number two, and soon, we will ovtertake you and reclaim our birth right (African Giants).

I’ve been in Kenya for two months now, I can honestly say I love it here and Kenyans are very intelligent and forward thinking people. I have been traveling to Africa for almost a year, and Kenya is ahead of a lot countries in Africa in terms of innovative thinking.

KSA currently doesn't have enough funding for its own management, plus they have been aware of Mars society of Kenya for a while. He even had a both in 2022 Kenya Space expo

Can I ask you a question my friend? What ethical boundaries do you think exist in colonising other planets? I’ll put this to you in another way. If the hypothetical situation were to exist where the space agencies had a choice of either a) creating the conditions to colonise a planet or b) leading an expedition to recover a quantity of a material that could permanently solve humanities need for advanced catalytic converters to counteract emissions. What should be the preferred course?

As a passionate space enthusiast from Kenya, I've been following SpaceX and The Mars Society since 2016. While I might not make it to Mars myself, I wholeheartedly wish Elon Musk, NASA, and all the astronauts involved the very best in getting humanity there by the late 2030s. As far as launch sites, Kenya has one of, if not the most ideal locations on the globe. Being on the equator & facing east means we need less energy getting into orbit, using the earth’s rotation for momentum allows for less expensive rockets and the ability to carry heavier payloads 🛰️ Having the vast Indian Ocean to dump the first or second stage rockets makes Kenya the perfect location to launch our own satellites.

This is very inspiring to aerospace enthusiasts in Africa and the idea of believing in one’s dreams. However, I’d just like to fact check a statement on sea dive atmospheric pressure being similar to space like conditions which is practically ‘vacuum like’. As one goes higher in the earth’s atmosphere, the density reduces and hence pressure till a certain point where it is almost negligible. For sea diving, the atmospheric pressure is very high attributed to the weight of water above it. Medically, even for flying, it is not recommended to do deep sea diving and go flying till about 24 hrs have elapsed due to the pressure differences in these conditions. Furthermore, Mars’s atmosphere is thinner than earth’s, presenting even lower conditions.
