As the verticalization of cities progresses, we are increasingly separated from the natural environment and forced to live in a mechanically controlled artificial environment. When we consider ecology and sustainability, the most important themes for architecture and cities in the 21st century, we must distance ourselves from Modernism and reconstruct architecture based on the life that embraces nature. In this lecture, Toyo Ito will explore this theme through the series of studies done with Harvard GSD students in Fall 2015, concerning tomorrow’s architecture on the small island of Omishima, Japan; and public architecture in regional cities, and a proposal for the New National Stadium in Japan. Toyo Ito, Kenzo Tange Design Critic in Architecture at Harvard GSD, is principal of Toyo Ito & Associates, Architects, in Tokyo.

I don't understand why blurring the images, if the idea is to share information then show everything, it's not a hit and run!

Got a chance to see this lecture in Singapore last year. The slides were amazing. Its unfortunate that they blurred most here.

As much as I like his earlier works and think Ito is a genuine guy, the quality of finish to the Taichung Opera House is painful to watch and ultimately sinks the staggering construction and engineering effort invested. I understand the ambitious nature of it, however it is a real shame.

Cheers brother, some constructive words there. But yes, it is really amazing to see all these Harvard Lectures available to the general public - something unthinkable a few decades ago - with under 1000 views, etc. On the other hand, excluding a few individuals like Prince Ramus, Ingels, Foster, Zumthor, Rem (sometimes), Holl (for the most), etc a lot of presentations by academics on the Harvard/Columbia/Yale channels come off a bit stale/abstract and are as a result often quite uninspiring (classic example for me is Eisenman, god bless him). Arguably this leaves the viewer/ public indifferent to comment - that is, if they even bother to watch in the first place. In that sense, I really think that the profession need to get up to speed with contemporary media/presentation standards to make their message relevant in the future.

Lovely lesson. Only wish the lovely translator wasn't asking 3 questions per sentence

In the city of Naples this man and his weird ideas on "tomorrow" are rightfully hated. He has ruined a whole neighborhood. Its "Centro Direzionale" is ugly as death and terribly clashes with the beauty of the classical architecture of the city, in which it does not and it never will fit. Also he made heavy projectual errors because he didn't take into account the geology of the zone and the subterranean waters, in fact the skyscrapers are slowly sinking into the soaked ground.
