Kerala 2023 Day 11 - Varkala to Alleppey 4K
This is my video of the eleventh day of the tour of Kerala (and Tamil Nadu) that I did with ABOriginal Motorcycle Tours in January 2023.
Full details of the tour are at:
indianmotorcyc...
On day eleven, we left the coastal cliffs of Varkala and set off inland, but parallel with the coast, heading north up to the backwaters of Alleppey. This was without a doubt the hottest day of the trip, made hotter with the high humidity. As most of the riding was through towns and villages full of palm trees, I also talk a bit about how this Scorpion Exo helmet has performed on the trip and also how the Knox Action Shirt that I've been wearing has worked in the heat.

Other than that, it's more of the same, with a bit of rambling! I'm also pretending that the left side of my head isn't a problem after bashing it into the seabed while trying to body surf on Day 10. And no, there isn't any footage of that!
There is no video for Day 12, (it was a rest day), so the next and final one will be Day 13.
Thanks for watching

Concerning heat/cold of India /UK: I'd rather have ice cream than ice storms, Andre ;-) It's bucketing down today in Nürnberg. Always look on the bright side of life, Günter

Same. But after more than two weeks of 30C+, a little chill would have been nice 🤣

How you can ride in that heat and not be pouring with sweat is beyond me 😊 My head would be pickled from wearing the helmet, never mind anything else, great vid though 😀👍

I'm just a cool person... (Just kidding, I'm not at all.... not even remotely). I've tried various things over the years, mesh jackets, enduro armour, this Knox jacket is my latest attempt. It's still not perfect but it is quite good. Vented helmets help a lot too, or at least a badly ventilated helmet is stifling. A well ventilated helmet is just about manageable. I've also found that if I have to ride in very hot temperatures, something like a hyperkewl vest under a vented jacket can make riding in up to 45C manageable, though you do feel a bit damp. For the india trip I had some Sidi Denver boots which were quite short, some Acerbis enduro gloves, the Knox Action shirt (with a long sleeve base layer underneath) and some Klim riding jeans with the thin Ghost D30 armour. It's still too warm, so I will look again, but it was ok for this trip. Wishing you cooler riding weather!

I bet you've really enjoyed this break. The internal visor on your helmet is really useful. You certainly don't need a big bike on these roads. The humidity wears you down. I recommend thin merino wool T-shirts under mesh jackets in humidity. You can wear them for days without them smelling. Mesh gear? Rukka StretchAir, both jacket and pants. Expensive but the best. Enjoy the snow and ice when you get back, Andre.

Thanks, I have the Rukka Forsair Pro jacket and trousers. I think that might be the UK name for the StretchAir (I know it’s not called Forsair everywhere). It’s ok, but doesn’t cope well on a GS with a screen and a fairing, so I thought I’d try this Knox stuff. The action shirt I have is a lot thinner and lighter than the Rukka and both are A rated for abrasion with Level 2 armour. Base layer also done (I have a mix of merino and synthetic but neither smell on a tour though I do Hotel laundry in the bathroom sink each day. I might as well use the shampoo for something!) and yes, the break was great and even the editing, though I wish it was done two weeks ago, and took less time, was good to relive it all.

@@PeakMotorcycles I'm not sure I believe all these rating regarding protection. I watched an interesting video on this on Bennetts Bike Social. StretchAir/Forsair = same thing. The heat/humidiity here: I'd never have a screen.

While you’ve been cruising through sunny India, we’ve had a week of below freezing temperatures here in Dallas. Those sunny days where you are look pretty sweet from where I’m sitting! I really like that helmet. I’ll need to upgrade mine soon. Thanks for taking us along.

You are very welcome. Sorry to hear about the icy blast. I'm sure it'll be too hot for anything before you know it!

No one does. That's why I put them there. Especially when I fall off on a test ride.... (Only happened once, and Harley Davidson were very polite. in fairness, it was quite a steep descent, with a sharp turn at the bottom and some slippery mud).

Been following the trip Andre.. looks like a lot of fun (and hot!!) was the Himalayan the ideal bike or would you have liked to swap to a classic on any of the days? Another trip added to my list of things I need to do.
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles Год назад
Overall, I think the Himalayan was ideal, though if they’d had a Scram, that might have been even better. I didn’t need the screen, and a bit more airflow coupled with a more nimble 19” front wheel and a more comfy seat would have been better, but it’s marginal. On some of the days on faster roads, another 20hp would have been amazing, but most of the time it was enough. Not sure I would have picked a classic at all. A new 350 classic perhaps, but I didn’t miss any of the quirks of the bullet 500. (My last bike trip to India was to Ladakh in 2014 and that was 1500km+ on a bullet 500. That was enough! I think I’ll head back in 2024 to do the Spiti Circuit with the same company.

Have you used this helmet going faster than 60 kmph or faster and how noisy does it get with the visor shut? Trip looks awesome, for sure.
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 8 месяцев назад
Yes, I’ve done about 150km/h in it and it’s fairly quiet. (That was with the external visor fitted, not the peak)

@@PeakMotorcycles thanks was looking for a good review of this helmet that would talk about wind noise at highway speeds and cant find any. just ppl showing the helmet design really... if you made a review of the helmet after some use I bet youd get some views! :) all the best from another Andre from Portugal! xD ps: hows the top vent? I have an exo combat II, and the vent looks alike this one, which hardly lets in any air :(

How loud is this helmet?
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles Год назад
Fine with the regular visor. Noisier with the peak and just the internal sun visor, but then the breeze is quite nice like that. It was up to 36C I think in India and it worked well in the heat and wasn’t tough noisy.
