THIS GUIDE IS FOR AN OLD VERSION OF KSP.
"CAREER MODE" in this release is now "SCIENCE MODE" in the current release.
This series covers the modern career mode
• Kerbal Space Program -...
The third part of my Career mode tutorial - we build a rocket that'll take us into orbit, learn a little about how to maneuver while in orbit and grab some science while we're up there.

I'm not a KSP noob. But i think it's really awesome that Scott takes the time and effort to make tutorials for the KSP beginners. You're awesome Scott!

Beginner tutorials get the most views, so I think he has some strong motivation. Scott is still awesome though. The most important factor for a teacher is that they know what they're talking about, and Scott has that area well covered.

I learned so much about orbital mechanics from this Man - not just for the game, but in general and to satisfy my curiosity. And it all was perfectly understandable - maybe a little bit on the Layman Terms at times, but nontheless very informative.

Hey Scott love the channel and this series has really helped me out, I have put rovers on Duna, and bases on the Mun, but this has really gotten me back to the basics and shown me how wrong I was doing those things. I was using twice the fuel for launches from Kerbin, so thank you! Something you might try in this series is saving and showing the wrong way to do things, then reload and show the proper way. Anyway keep up the great work!

Orbit works the same way as flight as described by the Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy. You just have to jump and miss the ground. _"There is an art to flying, or rather a knack. Its knack lies in learning to throw yourself at the ground and miss. ... Clearly, it is this second part, the missing, that presents the difficulties."_

This is super old... yet it makes me realize how easy orbiting is. The official guides are too hand-held and sometimes complicated. But this man makes orbiting seem way simpler. That's a *yes* /10

Hi Scott great series and thank you! After a few times trying to follow Part 3 I became confused. In Part 1 and Part 2 your pace is nice and slow and very easy to follow. Part 3 moves so much faster that it seems to be directed at much more experienced users. Early in the video I'm not sure which parts you are using or which hot-keys are being used. After breezing through Parts 1 and 2 it seems Part 3 is going to take me a lot longer, but obviously still well worth it.

This makes so much sense now! Before I had a relatively good understanding of orbiting in KSP but I always used to fly straight up, add a manoeuvre node at apoaps and then burn to get myself in an orbit. Now I realise I could save loads of fuel by turning 90 degrees while on the way up.

Thanks for the tutorials, Scott. I went into the game blindly and managed to get a satellite into proper orbit, and a test pod into a really strange orbit that I'm wondering might decay (halfway to the mun, then comes back to Kerbal just at 80,000 meters I believe).

I kept making it to the Mun, only to leave and run out of fuel stuck in a huge orbit around Kelbin. Turns out it all came down to the fact that my initial orbit (and escape) from Kelbin was incredibly inefficient. After seeing this guide I was able to land on the Mun and make it back without changing any design of my rocket. Thanks a lot for making these videos!

Around 5:45, you teach us to angle the rocket during launch as it's a more efficient use of thrust. However, many rockets will simply start rotating out of control at this point (even with SAS enabled). I also had many issues with too much velocity at low altitudes where the same would happen (tilt then rolling out of control) and I had to throttle back (or set solid burn rate lower). The result was having to pretty much do a ballistic trajectory and flatten out the orbit at apoapsis, but this costs a lot of fuel. The problem comes from 2 things which you didn't explain but I think are important to understand (eventually I learned it): (1) not enough SAS torque in the command module - I now put Inline Reaction Wheel on top of all my solid boosters and in the second stage near center of mass and it stays straight. This also means they fall off when the stage is done because you only need 1-2 in space usually. (2) SAS control response is relative to the changes in the command module which is far from the center of mass. According to the wiki, putting a secondary command module near center of mass and doing "control from here" will make the SAS behave less erratically on heavy rockets. (refer: wiki.kerbalspaceprogram.com/wiki/Stability_Augmentation_System) It may be too advanced for this beginner video, but those were the issues I ran into while trying to follow along here and might be good to add elsewhere in your tutorials under "stability". Apparently this has little to nothing to do with "drag" which is what I thought was happening sub-10k altitudes to cause the ship to roll over; gravitational loss is so much higher than drag losses on most ships that you want to keep it stable while gunning full throttle, thus the need for SAS torque.

Your KSP videos are great! I got this game because I like space and am also enrolled in a physics course, so learning about this game from someone who knows physics is perfect. I am an absolute KSP noob and went straight to career mode for a challenge. I think a video showing what buildings to invest in early on would be a great idea. My career mode has stagnated because rescue and survey missions are the only ones left that I can do with my current tech, but I can't do the rescue missions because I didn't upgrade the tracking station early enough. I also wasted tons of money on parachutes for stages that aren't recoverable due to the way the game handles separated unmanned stages. I think I'll try a new career now that I know all this, but a video combining building progression order and recovery mechanics would be super useful for us noobies.

Great minds think alike. That is almost exactly like the rocket I built for my first orbital flight in KSP career mode. The only difference is I put the thrust limiter to 50% on the SRBs, and I used the LVT-30 engine. I used the steerable fins so I didn't need the LVT-45 to steer with. You can also EVA and just hang out on the pod and take EVA reports over the different biomes.
