CCTV footage appears to show the moment the bridge linking Crimea and Russia was hit by a huge explosion early on Saturday morning.

The Kerch bridge, a hated symbol of the Kremlin’s occupation of the southern Ukrainian peninsula, was built in 2018.
Footage shared on Russian Telegram channels and news agencies appeared to show the moment of the explosion with two vehicles, a truck and a car, at the centre of the blast, although it was unclear whether either was responsible or simply caught up in the detonation

I don't think people realize how symbolic this is. Similar to the Doolittle Raid during World War 2, it's not going to win the war or a battle and is very risky. However the symbolic nature of proving that you can attack the unattackable, and in this case destroying the symbolic link between Ukraine's Crimea and Russia is huge.

I am not a forensic specialist, but after seeing this video in very slow speeds, many, many times, it appears that the explosion did not involve the truck. The explosion appears that it came from the right side of the truck, outside of the bridge guardrail, as shown by the enormous fireball that comes from the right and goes to the left. The blast was extremely powerful and points to explosives much more powerful than a fertilizer bomb. The blast vaporized parts of the bridge and sent showers of molten goo into the air that landed on the train that was subsequently set afire. The raging fire after the explosion was the fertilizer in the truck. The bridge collapse occurred because the support structure below the deck had been severely damaged. I suspect that some office in the Soviet Secret Servive orchestrated this in order to get Poutine to grow some balls and finish Zelensky. just say'n

at the 15-17 second mark you can see a watercraft underneath where the explosion was. Bridges are meant to bear weight downward not upward so when they set a bomb off under it it lifted and dropped it. Hopefully they can do it again

0:17 A strange wave appears exactly under the section and between the pillars the truck is driving on, fractions of seconds before the explosion. Something seems to emerge there. There are no similar waves between the other pillars. Most likely a remotely operated submarine (drone). The truck had nothing to do with this. The freight train on fire is secondary damage although I suspect and hope this was intended.

I have been looking at the clip in quarter speed and pausing at the moment of detonation, and it does look like it originated where the transport truck was. It was not from the left side, the oncoming traffic. Because you can still see the headlights of the car that is coming out of the blast area.

@@DabDabGoose Missiles with conventional warheads don't carry a lot of explosive...air-dropped bombs, yes, but not missiles which have severe payload limitations. An explosion that big from a missile strike would have to be from secondary, and unless Russia is now transporting nitroglycerine by truck a large IED seems likely.

@@baraxor Artillery rockets don't for sure. There's a case to be made that this is from the Hrim-2, a Ukrainian SRBM that's also suspected to be what hit the Crimean airfield in August. Big missile with a big warhead and a range of a few hundred km. An airburst to the right of the bridge would explain the damage and the splash coming in from that side.

My guess is it was under the bridge and that lifted the roadway up and dropped it in the drink. Bridges aren't built to handle forces from underneath. In fact I'd put money on the explosion being beneath the bridge.

View from Camera video under the railway bridge: Let’s try this again! 0:36 seconds: View from under railway bridge: image shows nothing in the water below the ‘traffic’ bridge. 0:38 seconds: bow of a boat appears directly under from where the white van will approach. 0:39 seconds bow of boat becomes more clear (probably remote controlled). 0:39 seconds Explosion number one, off camera to the right, note debris begins to fall from right of camera not possible if it was the truck. 0:47 seconds second explosion directly ‘under’ second lane of road bridge. 1:01 minute/second third explosion ‘below’ the rail bridge. This was a Professional military attack, against Putins logistics supply route. As a side note. I feel those who carried out the attack, whilst pleased with the result, will be disappointed that the three explosions did not bring down all three targeted lanes 2x road, 1x rail. Still excellent work.

Like an anti-bridge torpedo, but it launches it's payload upwards out of the water before it blasts? Is it just a strange coincidence that something is under the bridge at the same time? Also a war video analyst channel said there was a small ignition from the next further bridge stanchion at the water. He is the one I've seen first talking about the wave under the water, asking what it might be. What do you think it is?

That was never a car or truck bomb. Not only does the blast appear to start between items of traffic but a blast on top of the bridge would unlikely lift the roadway and dislodge it. That blast came from under the road bridge methinks.

Truck on the right. Slow it down and watch. You can see the explosion form from that point. Damage to the bridge shows no signs of being hit from underneath the decking. It was likely a large IED in the same vein as the Oklahoma City Bombing. If you don't believe that to be strong enough, perhaps look up damage from the OKC blast and think again.

From the overhead photos of the damaged bridge, it is unlikely the West-bound roadway spans would have collapsed if the truck had been 40m further west when it exploded as it would have been directly over a pier head instead of being just one third across the first collapsed 60m span. This location is obvious from the scaring received by the adjacent East-bound Road lanes. The post-tensioned cables within the span's beams were so overloaded by the additional explosive pressure would have failed and dragged the next span off its pier head support through the semi-ductile tie rods (for energy absorption during earthquakes) connecting the spans together.

Then how did the blast reach the train bridge which is higher and not do any damage to the other road carriageway? secondly if the blast was underneath how did the scorch marks across the other bridge deck happen. If you look at the other carriageway you can see in other picture that the railings have gone and there is scorch marks to the sides. To me it looks like a truck bomb has gone off right where the bit the is in the water is aligned with the scorch marks on the other carriageway. 1) This explains how the deck damage happened. Imagine being forced very hard down at the point and snapping the deck through pure force. This could have lifted the decks on either side causing what we see. 2) The blast damage and scorch marks across the other carriageways deck seems to me to be consistent with the explosion happening on top of the deck and slamming into the side of the train. 3) The carriageway in the water has it's railing blown off. How would this have happened if the blast was underneath it?

Anne Ward, When we do time freezes of the video, we clearly see a giant flash before the explosion, and all the cars and trucks are still intact and rolling (between 0:07 and 0:08). Then it's a total white-out, and the deflagration. See comment from Shane Stevens above. I haven't checked that yet. The Russian government says it was a truck-bomb. Not many burned ground/asphalt on the post-explosion images broadcasted by the Kremlin... And how irresponsible for Russian military commanders to send troops and experts on the site of such an explosion without any protection uniforms/gears, «not knowing» what this bomb was made of. Watch the video again from 0:17 to 0:18, doing time freezes or not, look to the right between the two yellow lines, you'll see something passing under the bridge before the explosion.

Interesting photos of the bridge during construction, It looks like the train part was higher at that point so the explosions force would have gone down, hit the water then bounced back under the road bridge lifting it off of the pillars then as it falls back down it would snap in the middle. There will be a lot of pictures circulating the net in the next few days so we should be able to work out if this is why it collapsed
