In 1962 I traveled to Kerkrade to compete in the Band Festival and I stayed for 3 or 4 days with a family that owned a furniture store there. The name was Schols. I will never forget them, their kindness and hospitality. In those days Kerkrade was a quaint vilage and it was one of the most exciting times in my life. I was 15. They had a daughter a few years my senior and I often wondered if she or the store were still there.
The border isn't as clear as it used to be in that street. There used to be a stone barrier in the middle of the street and there where no roundabouts en no zig-zag part. You can still see part of the barrier at around 2:20 in the middle of the roundabout. The barrier was removed more then a decade ago and years before that there was even a large fence on top of the barrier, so the middle of the street has always been the exact position of the border but nowadays it isn't as clear anymore.
