www.bbc.co.uk/markkermode After ten great years Kermode Uncut is coming to an end. To mark its passing I am listing my best and worst films of the past decade over the next two weeks. Here's the second part of my best films countdown...
You wouldn't rate Jack & Jill so highly if you'd seen "That's my Boy". "As inspired as it is nuanced, 'That's my Boy' is the closest thing we'll ever see to celluloid transcendence." - The Guardian.
My God Mark Kermode is my favourite film reviewer, so knowledgeable but not cynical in the slightest. There's this passion in every new review, as if he just discovered movies. I so connect to this
I saw the #1 movie in my hometown of Liverpool. and we all broke down and hugged each other. I was on a rare visit home as I live overseas now, and I brought my wife. and even she was beside herself. what an absolute surprise to see that movie being recognized when theres marvel everywhere
Thanks for putting unpredictable movies in the chart. I now look forward to watching some of these that I haven't ever heard of. I also like that you recognise these are personal choices to you and don't bow to the most popular choices; I guess all movies are deeply personal in a way, even blockbusters like inception! - they will only effect you depending on what you've been through in your life to get there.
I've only seen Moonlight out of these , but I'll be seeking the other four very soon. I don't always agree with kermode , but that's why I watch his reviews . He Always gives me a different perspective, and something to think about
I figured his list would go 10) Pimp with Danny Dyer 9) Jack and Jill 8) Enterauge 7) Rockenrolla 6) Death Proof 5) Sex and the City 2 4) Little Man 3) Human Centiped 10 2) Transfromers 16 Give Michel Bay more money 1) Pirates of the Caribbean 28: Orlando Bland leaves Ikea Knightly for Pinnico because he's less wooden and Johnny Dep falls over
@@DysnomiaFilms I'm aware. Linklater represents time in cinema like no one I've ever seen. It's funny to go back and watch before sunrise and see Ethan Hawkes character describe some of his crazy ideas for 24 hour TV shows and realism, and then you realize that that's literally what Linklater has done his entire career. How these seemingly crazy concepts aren't just concepts to Linklater, he actually goes out and does them. One of the best directors of his generation.
I just wanted to say that I’m so glad that I came across this blog. Mark has not only introduced me to a whole world of cinema, but also showed me that film can be much more than just a 90min romp at the box office. So thank you for this blog, I’m sad it is ending but the films that have been recommended will stay with me for my whole life. Thank you Mark!!!
I actually burst into tears when you said that your number one is 'Of Time and the City', such was the effect it had on me when I saw it at the cinema. Just as 'Distant Voices, Still Lives' did 30 years ago. Such a pleasure to see my favourite director at the top of the list, where he fully deserves to be ❤
Love it! Here's my list (at the moment) 1. Let the Right One In (2008) 2. Kill List (2011) 3. Under the Skin (2013) 4. Where You're Meant to Be (2016) 5. Holy Motors (2012) 6. Ex Machina (2014) 7. A Field in England (2013) 8. The Babadook (2014) 9. In Bruges (2008) 10. Berberian Sound Studio (2012)
I dunno if I could narrow a list down to the 10 best films of the last 10 years or so, but I can say without reservation that my favorite film was one I was introduced to through your channel, Mark. Before I reveal it, I just have this to say: The more films you see the more you tend to become a bit, to use the term in a mediocre way, jaded. You see the seams, the patches, the little itty bits that incrementally unravel whatever engagement a film builds. The great films suffer the least from this, appearing often as seamless, and continue to engage me well after I leave the theater. The worst never manage a moment's engagement, like Bucky Larson or Disaster Movie... All this is to say that when a pleasant surprise in the form of a great film comes along, like what would come to be my favorite of the last 10 years, A Royal Affair, I can't help but feel a bit indebted to the man that introduced us. Especially as that man has given so much otherwise. Kermode Uncut's absence will leave a hole not easily filled, as like the great films, you've engaged me as so many others with your passion, wit, generosity, knowledge, humanity, and accessibility. Thank you.
RAW! I was totally mesmerised by it in the cinema. Not a huge horror fan but I loved the fact it made me squirm in the cinema and was genuinely hard to watch. Loved it, glad it's in your top 5.
I would say Boyhood is my favourite movie of the last 10 years. Just the undertaking of making a film over twelve years that uses the same cast is an incredible achievement. It is powerful thought proking and quite simply, incredible.
I did my list of my ten on the previous video but I've actually seen Alfonso Cuaron's Roma since then & ,wow, it would now be a shoe-in to make my top ten. On a technical level it's an incredible achievement, not to mention that I litterally cried at the beach scene at the end, the emotions of the journey that movie had taken me on overwhelmed me by that point. I can honestly say that whilst I've been close before, no other film has ever brought me to tears until last week watching Roma.
You not rate revenant technically? Considering it's not fantasy or sci-fi I think someone from 20 years ago would be blown away...I was so impressed watching that in the cinema....I feel the cold and damp
Yeah, Roma was extraordinary. Such a mindblowing experience that left me speechless and completely still for about 20 minutes after the credits. Kudos to Alfonso.
@@dagnut Yeah, I loved The Revenant. Didn't quite make my top ten though when I worked it out but it would be in my top 20 of the last 10 years. Hope you enjoy Roma as much as I did. 👍
My own top 10 which was hard to do and will no doubt change if I do this list again in a few hours so I’m just gonna leave it at that... 1. Blade Runner 2049 2. Moonlight 3. Drive 4. Mad Max: Fury Road 5. Under the Skin 6. The Wailing 7. The Red Turtle 8. In Bruges 9. The Handmaiden 10. Her
I love Under the Skin so much, it's without a doubt my favourite of the last ten years - and if it wasn't for Adaptation or Irréversible it would be my favourite of the century so far.
I think I've only seen 4 of these and 3 of those (Baba, Twelve and Kevin) I wouldn't rate as masterpieces. However, I'd forgotten how brilliant and poetic I thought 'Of Time and the City' was when I watched it. That really is a masterpiece.
What’s the best way to get these snippets? these recaps if you will? for those who aren’t able to trudge through the hours and hours you have on spotify
My list in no particular order: The Man From Nowhere, Train to Busan, The Chaser, The Grey, The Handmaiden, Inception, My Annoying Brother, Interstellar, Logan, The Hateful Eight, The Wailing, The Revenant
My personal list reads: 10. Carol 9. The Handmaiden 8. In This Corner of the World 7. Wall•E 6. Birdman 5. Inglourious Bastards 4. Boy and the World 3. Wild Tales 2. Roma 1. Moonlight
Great list, with some great choices - and I guess I'll share mine too... 10. The Death of Stalin 9. Anomalisa 8. In Bruges 7. Joe 6. A Serious Man 5. The Lobster 4. Enter the Void 3. Her 2. Bad Genius 1. Under the Skin If I could've picked movies from 2007 I definitely would have chosen Children of Men and No Country for Old Men, and they both probably would have been in the top 5.
In This Corner of the World is beautiful. Everyone always says how Grave of the Fireflies is one of the most heartbreaking films ever, but it just feels so cold and distant. Meanwhile, In This Corner of the World deals with a very similar subject matter and it has so much more heart. I love the music in it as well. My favourite film of the last ten years has to be Mad Max: Fury Road. I think it could well be the greatest action movie ever.
Anyone sad at the end of Kermode Uncut should be aware, if you're not already, that he recently started a Kermode on Film podcast, which is like an hour-long Kermode Uncut with interviews and in-depth segments and is as great as you'd expect.
I've watched Roma twice and I could easily see that being my #1 or 2 with a bit more time but for now I've got Carol, Embrace of the Serpent, The Master and Your Name as my top 4 with the rest being quite hard to rank
Best animated should have its own list. Your name was one of the best of the last 10. Embrace of the Serpent was one of Mark's favourites too. Surprised that didn't make it. This list feels like the most emotionally affecting movies for Mark of the last 10
I was upset like everyone else when I realised that Mark was no longer doing Kermode uncut. From what I can gather though he is doing similar content on his Kermode on film podcast (available on Spotify) where he has just released his top 10 films of 2018. The reason I think this blog is stopping is because he is transitioning to Spotify where he will cover additional content aside from the 5live show. So if you're missing Kermode uncut check out the podcast, I'.m looking forward to more content in the hells video series.
My 10 Favorites: 10. Amour 9. Whiplash 8. mother! 7. Dogtooth 6. Shame 5. The Lobster 4. The White Ribbon 3. The Killing of a Sacred Deer 2. Inside Llewyn Davis 1. The Favourite
Thanks for the tips, also the option to have a go! Here's mine: (limited to top 5 on account I'm a more casual film lover) 5. Sully 4. Ladybird 3. Manchester by the Sea 2. Call me by your name 1. La La Land Interestingly, we have no overlaps! I have a lot of yours to see though... Good luck with next projects.
This list has some really really beautiful movies on it. I haven't seen "Of Time and the City" yet but I absolutely will since 'Girlhood' is one of my favorite movies ever and I struggle to think of a lot of films I could put above it. :)
Wow. I thought I was the only person to have been deeply effected by Of Time And The City. I had no idea it was MK's top film of the last 10 years. I feel so validated! I thought I was alone in thinking this little BFI DVD I took a chance on buying was the best thing I'd seen in years - and all because I'm from Liverpool, left it 35 years ago and fancied looking into the history of my birthplace. A masterpiece.
You're certainly not the only one. I cried so many times while I was watching it and I've no idea why. And I'm not even from Liverpool! It's the Terence Davies magic. I've no idea how he does it.
12 Years A Slave would top my list, no hesitation. Then again, I haven't seen many of the films in your top ten, not even Moonlight yet. Must remedy that. I'm especially intrigued by The Red Turtle and Girlhood. Interesting that so many disturbing films hit your list. We Need To Talk About Kevin, for example, so thoroughly unnerved me that I don't think I'll ever watch it again. Still, great list and I'm sorry to see Kermode Uncut come to an end. Thanks for making content of such high quality.
great to see red turtle in the top 5, and some films I need to see. i'm not too keen on that rewind sound you've used in the video edit, was really jarring.
I love love love that Of Time And The City tops the list. Talk about revitalising a genre. City Symphonies are beautiful but have been a dead genre for longer than almost everyone watching this video has been alive. Some of the most important films of all time were city symphonies and Of Time And The City tops basically all of them. Not my favourite of the last decade but a really beautiful film that deserves more eyes.
Predictions off the top of my head for his top 5 worst in no particular order... One of the post-ToL Terrence Malick films Filme Socialisme Norbit The Do-Over Entourage Feel free to crap on the ones I got wrong!!
My favourite 10: 10. Zama 9. Act of Killing 8. Court 7. Still Walking 6. Tabu 5. Timbuktu 4. Son of Saul 3. The White Ribbon 2. Winter Sleep 1. Once Upon a Time in Anatolia
Once upon a Time in Anatolia is that good? I watch Winter Sleep and it's was ok but i didnt feel identified with the movie in a deep level, i need to see this but i am not sure about it
Whiplash The tale of princess Kaguya (over the Red Turtle) Embrace of the Serpent A Monster Calls The Master Hereditary Blade Runner 2049 Under the Skin Scott Pilgrim and Persepolis (tie) Mother! and The Black Swan (tie) Iv'e not seen The Handmaiden or Phantom Thread yet but I'm sure they'd be contenders if I did along with a lot of others mentioned. I saw Girlhood and it was affecting sure, but top ten. Its personal. A lot of people on here have very similar tastes and I'm actually delighted at people's top ten. 95% are deservedly mentioned
My top 10: 10. Lucky 9. Mustang 8. Personal Shopper 7. A Silent Voice 6. Your Name 5. The Handmaiden 4. Short Term 12 3. Drive 2. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly 1. Wolf Children Loved all your picks though, and thank you for all the movies I discovered through your recommendations. And happy 27th wedding anniversary! It’s my parents’ Linda and Frank Kitchen’s 27th wedding anniversary today too!
If we're not including 2007 films, my top 10 would be: 1. Moonlight (2016) 2. Call Me By Your Name (2017) 3. Her (2013) 4. Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) 5. Boyhood (2014) 6. The Master (2012) 7. Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010) 8. Phantom Thread (2017) 9. 13th (2016) 10. Shutter Island (2010) Honourable Mentions: Embrace of the Serpent, Frances Ha, La La Land, Under the Skin, more that I can't remember
I'm suprised that he didn't think that Call me by my name should be on his list I know it is on mine.. beautiful movie brilliant cinematography excellent acting too.
My personal favourite, maybe whatever happened to my life made me remembered this movies: Mad max fury road. Room Arrival Inside out Kick ass Blue valentine Hereditary The raid 2
In no particular order this would be my top 10 of the last 10 years: Her Before Midnight The Hunt (Jagten) Sicario Birdman The Dark Knight The Great Beauty (La Grande Bellezza) La La Land The Social Network (most underrated and overlooked film of the last decade imo) Shame Then there would be some honorable mentions that could easily make the cut: Black Swan, The Act of Killing, Phantom Thread, Drive, The Revenant)
OMG the only film I had heard of was no 10 the shape of water, due to it's Oscar coverage. Nonetheless, I'll be checking them all out over the festive season, so many thanks Mark, you're a timeless asset from the UK, one and only for the film industry to belove.
The Red Turtle was so beautiful and so sad! If I was doing a list from the last ten years, I'd put A Monster Calls at number 1 (though I'm not sure I could watch it again) then for the rest, Pride would certainly be in there. Maybe Sunshine on Leith, Captain America Civil War and The Winter Soldier, Avengers Infinity War, Kubo and the Two Strings, Gravity, Lion, Big Hero 6, and Warrior. Phew! That was hard.
My list 1) Twin Peaks The Return 2) The Master 3) Mad Max Fury Road 4) Boyhood 5) Holy Motors 6) The Social Network 7) The Grand Budapest Hotel 8) The Assassin 9) The Act Of Killing 10) Blade Runner 2049
Some that come to mind for me in no particular order The Master Her Good Time Moonlight Gone Girl Black Swan Drive Blade Runner 2049 Enemy Phantom Thread Suspiria (yes I know it hasn't been out long)
I don't agree with you on raw being on the list as a horror fan it didn't float my boat..thanks mark for the great content over the last 10 years..top man
My list 1. Moonlight 2. What we do in the Shadows 3. Her 4. A girl walks home alone at night 5. Timbuktu 6. Interstellar 7. A bigger splash 8. Django 9. The lobster 10. Inherent vice
Nice list. One of the great things about movies is that not many people would have the same top ten. Ps. Took me a while to trust you again after you said that you prefered Silent Running to 2001.
My top 10 from the last 10 years starts off with a clear top two: 1. Your Name/Kimi no Na wa (undisputed favourite, absolutely magical film that I can watch over and over and still enjoy like the first time); 2. The Dark Knight (gripping storyline packed with great performances across the board). Those are followed by, in no particular order: - Social Network - Captain America: Winter Soldier - Hunt For The Wilderpeople - Mission Impossible: Fallout - Logan - The Big Short - Thor: Ragnarok - The Raid
1. Black Swan 2. A Serious Man 3. Martyrs 4. Shame 5. Phantom Thread 6. The Handmaiden 7. The Witch 8. The White Ribbon 9. Winter Sleep 10. The Turin Horse
Can someone do the kermode awards on your behalf? It is a shame that such a good institute has to leave but I think we should do a kick starter for someone to take over as host and continue this great passion we call cinema
@@thedudewhomadethisvideo so do I. Nothing ironic about my love for it tbh (not being ironic rn). It's timeless. It would be silly to put a release date on it.
Gr8 list Kermode My top 10 movies are. Her Whiplash Spider-Man into the spider verse Ex machina Cabin in the Woods Me Earl and the dying girl Logan Captain America Civil War Chronicle Perks of Being a Wallflower
