so did they just clear all the sound of music stuff away for this night!? where do you keep a big hill?? and all them big lights they have there are not like that in sound of music what do they do?? i saw wicked last friday night and i think i had Kelly :) but she didnt do the slur thing on 'ever guna bring Mee*ee*ee* down' which i was upset about :( but still loved it!!!
OOOOOMMMMMMFFFFFFFFGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!! This is AMAZING!!! it's so good to see the real kerry instead of a cabbage all the time!! Definitely better without the make up!!! I love this song!!!! Appeals to a much bigger audience than the original...but i love anything Wicked related tbh!!!
Usually, I'd be pissed if anybody else did this song because I would say the he or she butchered a perfectly good song, but since it is Kerry Ellis who everybody knows is capable of doing, I'm in love with it. :)
@danielmokey Glee didnt massacre it, IDINA MENZEL DID! Glee sang Idina's version, kerry has her version (the one in the video) and idina has hers (the one they sang on glee)
I personally don't like this version, I like Idina, however she was shakey and struggled at times. Look up Jemma Rix Defying Gravity. She was the Australian standby and now the lead Elphie. She has amazing control and a great connecting voice, she's a true alto-soprano, whenever I hear her I'm sure of her notes, always on key. :)
wow lol sounds like they fixed the sound, it didn't sound this good in the theatre, they had brian may turned way up so all u could really hear was crazy guitar riffing still this was the only act that got a standing ovation from the royals lol, guess they like rock :p
i bet its not easy keeping a big hill backstage!! and all the lights are set out completley different for this lol! i'm glad they did it in this theatre though :)
i guess this is the closest this song will ever get to being metal. (lol, i'm a dork like that) oh, its still roof-raising. and only a beast like kerry (ellis that is. lol) could pull off a rock version of this epic song (this coming from someone who's not that big of a fan of hers...and her voice is beastly, just listen to all the growling)
So What, it sounds better than anything in the charts and tbh if you say you cant compare because it is not mainstream music then i suppose your saying that Kerry Ellis is in the same par as Lily Allen. And if you call that singing then what on earth is this world commign to?
Kerry's version on CD, brilliant... Kerry singing defying gravity live...AWESOME! i have seen this song live (not with Kerry) but that is where the song comes out best, and this is a perfect example. Great video, thanks for uploading it.
I really respect Kerry as her work is just incredible! I met her last Saturday when I saw 'Oliver!'. She was an absolutely amazing Nancy!!! I really recommend going to see 'Oliver!' in the West End... It's Brilliant. Love you Kerry
I love this version of the song. I mean the original is brilliant but turning it into a rock song is even better. For me, it just adds to the passion and conviction that Elphaba had.
it's alright, i saw her in the role of Elphaba and she was incredible singing it the way Stephen Schwartz wrote it. I don't really like this rock version but i Love her voice.
I've seen her in Wicked and I admit, I was a bit dubious about her abilites to BE Elphaba after this, since it seems rather showy. But OMG! Totally worth the trip down to London.
It does take something very special to be able to sing like that, it's still a terrible song from a terrible show but she at least makes it worth listening to.
its on the UK itunes, I just searched for Kerry Ellis and on the search results you get her Defying Gravity and thers a single she dueted on as well that comes up
@itzaramaja DOn't get me wrong he is an AMAZING guitarist (I should know being a guitarist myself) but im just saying by turning this particular song into a rock song in my opnion defeats the object of the original :O) But yes i completely agree that he his an amazing guitarists it just that the original of this is soooo well known as the orchestral arrangment seen in the show :)
I really want to hate this, because it feels like a sacrilege to a beautiful and emotional song, but she does it so well that I have to love it. What I DO hate is that damn dress! One misstep and it's a serious wardrobe malfunction. I wonder if she can even sit down in it...Her beautiful hair blows my mind. Also, those guitars would be awesome in As Long As You're Mine. okay I'm done now. :D
@Pikachu123345 what i meant was, it is already a rock song, brian may can do whatever he wants with it as far as i'm concerned. But i do understand your frustration, being that i get pissed off when they do something different with my favourite show. and if you cannot be open minded about the music at least be intelligent enough to understand why the lyrics were changed....SHES NOT SINGING WITH / TO ANYONE in the song so it makes sense to change the lyrics to suit what shes trying to do.
@lou1893 i totally get where you're coming from. but to be fair if you were a performer and didnt act like you were meant to be that character then you're performance would be really lame and not realistic. and anyway Wicked is a broadway thing idina cant be the only elphaba thats just ridiculous. you might prefer her but she just happened to be the first to play the role. they all have different styles you cant really compare its just your own preference.
rondack17, why do I not find it surprising that you're an Idina MANzel fan? Maybe we should discuss Idina's jaw, or her nose, or her lack of a rack, or her bingo wings. Let's not get into her strained voice and ridiculous gasping. Oh, wait, that'd be blasphemy because Idina was "tEh OrIgINAL". You Idina fans are like Muslim extremists, all you can do is go around youtube verbally attacking everyone else who's played Elphaba.
As well as having a superb voice , she's a lovely lady , I asked her to send a message on an 18th birthday card for my daughter which she kindly did ( we even got green fingerprints on it so she must've done it in her dressing room ! ) . My daughter was so thrilled to get it , that shows me that she appreciates her fans & makes time for them . Thanks Kerry ! Going to see her in Wicked again next week , cant wait !
She completely annihilated the other performances that night - it's a shame that people like Rihanna have so much media attention and fame, when in reality it's those like Kerry who have the real talent and can deliver an amazing performance, especially considering it was live. Would be nice to see her do the Wicked version at a future performance as Idina did a few years ago - but this rock version is equally as impressive.
Menzel is blown out of water, wonderful performance by Kerry. Sometimes performers own their roles and you think they can't be topped, but occasionally there comes someone even better or at least different and as good. However, with the same idea, Helen Sjöholm owns the role of Kristina, which Kerry did good, but still in a different league.
okay i have never been into musicals, i dont dislike them but i just never felt the need to ever go see one. my family dragged me to wicked last year in london. i had NO IDEA what to expected. but i fell in love with musicals when i saw kerry ellis perform defying gravity. so i give all credit to kerry ellis for getting me into this. THANK YOU!!!!!
no no no in the jeleaous way i hate her because everyone loves her and really she is not so amazing (and i get really angry when people says that shes better than idina or eden), and this way of defying gravity is the worst ever!, there are other versions that are superbs like idina's but this one sucks. listen carefully to her and maybe you can see that she´s not so amazing
no shes leaving wicked for good in may . she moving on to something else, i forget what its called though. so i think miss ellis is leaving us as elphie forever :( i really want to go see her before she does though, shes my second favourite elphie ever, i missed my chances to go see idina, so i really dont want to miss her too
why? do you mean you hate her in a jealous way? or just generally hate her? i hate her in the sense that i am extremely jealous of her, she has everything i want, she beautiful and she has the most incredible voice ever. but i dont hate her because i think she has a great personality too (in interviews ive seen). i love this song and i love her voice xxx
OMFG kerry ellis what a babe, her vocals are like nothing i've ever heard before and whats nice to know she is also a lovely person when she came to my college where i study an extended diploma in performing arts she was so kinda real pleasure to work with in a workshop.
@DjTokenMusic nooooo, its not actually. Have you seen the actual musical....live....in a theater?! Its not performed with a rockish tent none what so ever! I just dont like this persons voice and I was pissed she changed the lyrics. You dont ruin genius like that.
kerry ellis is amazing, she will laways be my elphaba, when i saw her at the west end sing this song, she gave me fucking goosebumps!!! trying to eb open minded so I watched an Idina menzel performance, and honestly i can't compare the two, kerry ellis just gives the song so much more power and edge!!
He is indeed , he's Rufus Taylor & he's only 17 . If you look up Roger Taylor at the Royal Variety Performance on here , you'll see Rufus in the background being totally ignored while his dad gets all the attention even though it was Rufus who was the drummer that night !
Yeah you're right - nobody even talked to him. He should go to shows and events without his all so famous daddy :p Oh I love this song! Kerry Ellis has such a great voice. It's even better that Brian and Rufus are playing in her "band". That makes it more interesting!
You see a bit more of him close up if you check out Roger Taylor at the Royal Variety Performance on here . Rufus is hovering around in the background while his dad gets all the attention even though it's Rufus who plays on stage . Mind you , his dad's not a bad drummer either !
To anyone who says this girl can't sing... look at Idina Menzel and Kerry Ellis - I know Him So Well. Seriously, get off your high horses and think how hard it is to get into the music world when you have people there who REALLY can't sing.
ok then upload a video of you singing it and then we will really tell. Her voice is different and amazing and she made the song her own, look her singing i dreamed a dream and no one but you and then tell me you can sing better than her.
When Kerry Ellis wasn't picked on "The Voice" I was literally screaming at the screen! I, unlike the judges, knew who she was and how great a singer she is. Which is blatantly obvious when she sings Wicked songs. The judges need hearing tests.
@Pikachu123345 Umm for starters, they did change the lyrics when Idina did solo's on letterman. Music is transitory, you are allowed to change songs.. This is amazing Kerry has a beautiful voice. Maybe learn more about the performance before reacting
@Pikachu123345 You've got some issues do you know that? There are a lot of different people out there. I like this version and for a fact I like it better than the original. I'm a rocker. Get over it. It's just a song. If you don't like it, don't listen...
firstly, just because she doesnt look like a stick insect, that does not make her fat. kerry ellis is far from fat. in real life she is stunning. and its not about 'not looking like a prostitute or looking fat' - its about talent, which kerry has a lot of.
never in a million years did i think that defying gravity would make a good rock song lol...wow that takes true talent to pull that off...idina is still my fave (i know that sounds cliche lol) but Kerry is not far behind at all Very Well Done!! Bravo
Interesting concept but the original song is much more nuanced. The power chords destroy the song, the complicated orchestral background is 50% of what's great about the song. Also this version has to much kick from the start, it doesn't evolve at all.
unfortunately I couldn't go to see her last show, because it would have meant staying over night and would have been too expensive, but i'm doing the next best thing and seeing her last matinee performance! I'm so excited but so sad she's leaving :(
@lou1893 Oh you can't be serious, just because you originate something doesn't make you the best , and actually stephanie j block was the first to play elphaba in the work shops. Kerry's voice destroys Idina's.
@hlgordon16 The character does not belong to her because she was not the original. Also when someone was doing their version of the song, Idina said it was "Our song" as in every girl who ever wants to sing it
ceasexfire10x9x8... i've seen wicked 5 times, seen kerry 3, alexia once and saw cassidy once. Kerry is just amazing! better than the others, though anyone who plays elphie has gotta be amazing to get the role!
my gran was always wondering why i was constantly going on about how great she was, she watched this and then rang me up after to tell me how amazing she thought kerry was :D lol. she thought she had an outstanding voice!
I've seen this live in concert! Unbelievable anyone says Kerry can't sing u r flippin kidding me this girl rocks any genre and her version of queen songs are unbeatable apart from the originals of course!
sorry but this is appalling - she is soooo overrated! she must be one of the laziest theatre actresses I have ever had the displeasure of seeing on stage and this is just shouting, not singing
@JennyMarie195 Really? I mean yes a lot of people prefer other versions of this songs, but as a live performance can you really call this perfomance bad? Technically speaking it's actually awesome. XD
Wow, Kerry Ellis is amazing but this is too much. I love it so much, and her but this doesn't work. She has an amazing voice, but the song is amazing originally. Not really into the whole Brian May thing.
each version of this song is so fantastic. This is one of my favs. I'm a true IDina fan, and would love to hear her rock this song like this....but Kerry's really good! And i heart that dress.
tbh i think she has ruined the song its not supposed to be like this and i hate it sorry to all the people that like it but i think it has been ruined. This song in its original form is a classic
By far better than most live performance from "big artists" at the moment. Better than all this auto tune bollocks thats out atm. Its a shame people dont actually know REAL talent.
Oh wow. I've seen the musical live in London and that was amazing and this is just on a whole 'nother level! It just works so well and what's not to like when Brian May is involved =D
Fabulous ! I've met Kerry & she's such a nice lady as well as being extremely talented of course . Really looking forward to seeing her in Oliver next year . The woman's a genius !!
I love the idea of making it into a rock track, and I love this version, but i'd love to hear it done with the guitars but Idina on vocals. Nobody can sing that song like Idina.
You can't compare it, because it's not the same style. It's like comparing Take On Me by A-ha and the Reel Big Fish. Totally different interpretations that can't be compared...
@Calimeric1 Nobody will ever own it? Just because she was the first doesn't immediately make her the best, vocally Idina is one of the weaker actresses to attempt this song.
I maintain - I reckon it'll be pretty likely that this version would be played out over the end credits of the Motion Picture - if it ever comes out of Development hell...
This was a really good version. Not as good as the original but still awsome. But I don't like her attitude. And she shouldn't wear short, tight dresses. Just saying.
