@@Mensch31 Well Fairfax ended well didn't it , basically a failed news media , doomed to ultimate failure unless it becomes like another Guardian Political party which maybe it is already .
I have no idea what I’m watching or why, but I’m enjoying it. This man oozes confidence. His calm demeanor and assurance has me in awe. Well done sir, we’ll done.
What you watching is bunch of so called Aussie Aussie Rule makers been humiliated & shown up as Brainless toads' by one of the richest and brainiest men ever lived in the Lucky country.
Yeah - but you need to learn about the back-story and what happened after this appearance. A confident smiling assassin. He had to later withdraw from his position once the truth came out about his shady backroom dealings.
@@-olives Hahaha yeah... He was so full of shit. Kerry Packer is an excellent lesson in the power of charisma given how many people think so highly of him based on this charade. Most of the irrelevant factoids he's spouting sound incredible because they're tid bits from the narrative of his own extremely powerful and privileged life. It's a peek behind the curtain so to speak. So, it is somewhat mesmerising. But on the substance of why he was appearing, he was doing his best at trying to hoodwink the inquiry and the public. To his credit, he pulled that off as far as he could control. Unfortunately the truth came out with respect to his relationship with Mr Black...
This hearing is a gem 💎 Mr Packer was a highly-intelligent, well-educated, hard-working and witted Titan. He had an uncanny vision of the future which unfortunately came true today. He singled-handedly scrub the floor with all these wankers and their hypothetical questions, innuendos about tax cheating were soundly rebuked. What saddens me the most is that Mr Packer left us too soon while the useless politicians in the hearing were able to outlive him. A movie should be made about this remarkable man. RIP Kerry Packer.
@@fredfish4316 he most certainly inherited a great deal of money but he most certainly used that inheritance to make a great deal more. for you to say he inherited every penny is factually incorrect. are you saying that, because you are not in a position to receive a large inheritance, every one who does should be demeaned? i suspect you're a carp?
As shrewd a businessman he was, he was not the "messiah" so many would think him to be. In his dealings with Conrad Black, he said "I hardly know the man". A shrewd business player does not enter agreements of great consequence and potential gain with people or entities they "hardly know". He knew Conrad Black, that is certain. In his own words, Black is the "newspaper guy" that's why he is on the board and chairman. He will either do well or be voted out, I have great faith in the man. That same Conrad Black was convicted of Fraud. It was know for many years, Conrad Black liked to "dance with the devil" and push legal boundaries. I am very sure, Mr Packer also knew this.
It speaks volume that Kerry sits alone in front of the media and press there on the day, it looks like he represents the rest of Australia whilst answering to the Reps. You can tell who owns the room from the moment he states his name.
@j88 i didnt either. I dont make an absolute statement except the following: I have not lived long enough to be that naive to think I know it all. Why do you think I watched him speak? To learn.
This is a brilliant man. So far ahead of his time. He knew his rights and made them all look like fools, so easily. A sharp business man I wish that James had more of his fathers abilities.
@@andrewcoursaris3975 not every body is cut out for business - whilst James was groomed for the business, it's a vastly different world and I'm sure he is aware of the expectations on his shoulders and comparisons to his father.

Kerry Packer was a beast. Not intimated by the politicians at all and absolutely puts their feeble questioning to shame. He knew his stuff and puts forward bulletproof arguments. I wish there was more footage of this business animal strutting his stuff.
very nicely said. having known Kerry personally and business-wise for 9 years, he was such a nice generous man. He helped advise me and helped my company expand to what it is today. Gone much too soon. A humble genius whose friendship Ill always remember. RIP my friend.
Don’t know that all their questions were feeble. There were many important questions raised and he answered them well. What questions in particular did you find so vexing?
@@The_Candyman86 Your use of the word "generous" rung a bell with me, Steve. Around this time in the early '90s, Kerry Packer spent a lot of time here in Sussex, England in connection with his polo team. Having attended a local Italian restaurant all summer long after polo matches he asked a waitress who'd been giving him good service that summer "do you and your husband have a mortgage"? Long story short he left a tip to the value of her mortgage as a way of saying thank you. What an act of generosity that was and good on him. .
The loss of Kerry’s generation, which is also my father’s generation, is one that can never be replaced. Australians today are a shadow of the Australians of old.

Australia would have been a very different country if Kerry Packer had become PM. He is what you call very perceptive and a shining example of knowing your business.
One hour, fifty six minutes and twenty six seconds of compelling viewing with a great Australian giving our politicians a lesson in life. The last two minutes of prediction as to where and what TV will be has turned out, nearly 30 years later to be accurate. Mr Kerry Packer was a great Australian.
No. This was an exchange. KP was unelected, inherited wealth and knowledge of media. The people present are capable. KP was a forceful ego, known as the Goanna. Of course he knows his area of endeavour.
@@BlueBeeMCMLXI No. KP was subpoenaed to appear, as he said, ‘reluctantly’. Those elected members, most whose credentials, in area of the inquiry are questionable, asked, in the most cases, unintelligent questions, who didn’t listen, received answers and opinions that more than outlined where this country stands and as time has proved, were correct. Your assertion of Mr Packer’s integrity are your opinion.
I still watch this every two months for inspiration and I’m South African. That means I have little respect for Australians but this guy. Man oh man what a champ
I’m American and Kerry Packer was pure genius and brilliant businessman. These pollies would have driven me crazy. I still can’t figure out what this inquisition is about. In America we seem to be real short of plain speakers like him. And God help us from politicians.
He was a role model in how to be prepared, knowledgeable, authentic, true and calm. Definitely a remarkable business man and gentleman with all he did.
What a fascinating session. Who'd have thought a parliamentary committee hearing could be so entertaining?! Packer's comments at the end, regarding the future of newspapers, showed a deep understanding of the industry. 22 years after this hearing, his prediction has turned out to pretty much be true.
Just in case your account is still working, then 32 years after this hearing his prediction is still pretty good. What he described as his own 'rambling' in 1991 is a pretty good outline of what happened to print media and free to air TV. He didn't predict the internet specifically, but he was on the right track about fragmentation and ultimately the devaluation of the product. That's why he was such a good businessman. Impressive to have that kind of vision before the fact. Way easier to look back than to look ahead.
@@BlueBeeMCMLXI Is this meant to be a response to my post? I don't quite follow the point you're making. How else is a forecast meant to be judged, except with the benefit of hindsight?
Fascinating to watch.. how intimidating it would be for the average Joe like myself to sit in front of a bunch of people asking you a bunch of questions. He handled it like the true boss he is. I feel like I can learn from watching this video..
Better than university...just got to know what your doing and employ lawyers to substantiate your ideas. Lawyers are to instruct or ask advice..nothing else
@@BlueBeeMCMLXI Just because he did it all the time it doesn't mean you can't admire or be fascinated with how he handles it. If anyone could do it, then everyone would do what he does. Take a look in the mirror before you call others stupid.
How interesting it is that Peter Costello is involved in this estimates hearing, where much of the conversation is about cross-media ownership laws. Fast forward to 2018, and he is the chairman of Nine, which has just effectively bought Fairfax. Packer would be impressed.
Netflix, even the internet, getting news on your tv or printed in your house haha He nailed it all. Also he said the paytv in 1991 was a pink elephant that will become obsolete **cough NBN cough**
My cousin, a courier and her toddler son were waiting at a lift to go up to his offices with a box to be delivered. Packer walked up and asked where they were going, when she said where, he took the box from her and asked if he could have a lick of her son’s ice cream and carried the box to the reception desk for them. My cousin adored him and his kindness from that day.
Kerry Packer is a logical & factual operator, he does his homework & covers all areas from legal, social, political & economical. He makes sure that when he makes his arguments he has not just balanced facts to back himself & credible statements. But he ensures that he closes all gaps, whist politicians attempt to open or even wedge this my re-writing rules. If your not happy or satisfied then except it for what it is.
Best 1hour 56 minutes I have watched in ages. This man was simply brilliant and sad we didn’t use his brain and his skills more as our country may be in a better position than it is today. 1 smart business man vs 12 people who had a hand in development of our country and he smacked them all. Vale Mr Packer.
Kerry Packer is one of the best Australian's that ever lived. Jamie I am sure your are so proud. There will never be another Kerry. RIP mate. You bloody Legend!!!
It's sickening to see people who have gone nowhere in life attacking a man who has achieved so much in life. Classic tall poppy syndrome. Anyway Kerry puts them all back in their little boxes.
Accidentally found videos of this man on RU-vid and I've been binge watching him destroy people all day. I'm South African and don't know Australian politics but from this alone I can tell that he is innocent of their accusations that's how much of a beast he is interms of debate.
This entire thing was akin to driving 59km/h in a 60 zone and a cop pulling you over, saying, "you know, you're pretty close to the speed limit there, pal".
I had something similar to that many years ago. I was stopped late at night doing 29 in a 30. The police response to me was nobody does that at this time of night. Fouut6 I had a passenger as a witness and stopped an illegal stop going further.
A true legend, the last question on the future and how he answered. Today with mobile phones and the internet, he foresaw these things. R.I.P SIR a true Australian
@@HouseholdDog she deserved to cry. She was an embarrassment. I would be ashamed of myself too if i said the stupid things she did. I would deserve to be owned by packer in reply as well
What a great man he was. Not just for the media but also Australia. Wish we had more like him around today. Also thanks for saving cricket in Australia.. . Cheers great man.
Typical politicians, unprepared time wasters asking the same questions over and over and not listening to the answers. Also a good example of politicians projecting how they would selfishly behave onto others.
Ooh. Im not an Australian. im from another country . I didn't understand nothing hhhh. But i enjoy it i love riches when they talk about money and economy. I wish that i understand it
The internet created a special kind of ignorance - splitting public bases of knowledge and dissemination, and allowing bigots to live in bubbles where they only hear like-minded voices. But foremost - publication used to have rigour, but not anymore. Crap parades as fact, and feelings outweigh reason - and at every turn. The newspapers and magazines named still publish, in case you are not an Australian person.
It is some of the most captivating content in the history of Australian TV. Packer was a bully and a bruiser but also highly intelligent, determined and charming. I also miss an era when people weren't afraid to speak there mind. Today everyone is so scared of offending someone that they are wallpaper.
Its always good to see a quality businessman teaching politicians how their actions impact the workings of the countries they are supposed to be managing, it would be good to know who the next Kerry Packer is as this man was a Goliath.
Kerry bought an estate in the UK around this time called 'Fyning Hill'. I was an 18yr old carpenter apprentice working on the main property. It was very ornate place with a huge sweeping marble staircase to the main entrance. He didnt like it, so decided to cover it all up with carpet. All the money in the world, but really no show at all to the guy. I only met him 2 or 3 times, but he used to speak to me like any normal guy would, then bollock my boss for screwing things up. Cool guy but you wouldn't want to cross him.
He didn't blahblah. He proposed a scenario about influence. Quite right that Packer's point was that the legislation says 15%. He was compliant with 15%. Costello avoided the trap that the others wallowed in.
@@elizabethblackwell6242 costello squirmed in his seat and found it real hard to choose his words in his sentences. I consider him our greatest treasurer, rate him highly but not here vs packer Packer didn't just say you the commonwealth said 15% and i am buying 15%. He also argued soecifically that his 15% would not give him control
Some politicians that are on the panel, are in awe and maybe timid in asking Kerry Packer questions, Ms McHugh at 48.15 got put in her place and her reaction is priceless
What a fascinating performance to watch, after the passing of 30 years! Much hair has greyed. Kerry Packer and many others have passed on. The US-dominated digital media has asserted influence undreamed of by the newspaper-television "cross-media" of old. But the baleful influence of the ever-changing Australian "parliamentary-bureaucratic complex" continues to impact Australian's civil liberties.
Good for you Kerry. This guy treats the pollies with the contempt that the idiots deserve and does a good job of it. He exudes power and intelligence and total control of the room. Sad day when we lost Him.
Costello was the only one who understood the terms of the enquiry hence he merely proposed a scenario. The rest kept debating the legislation. Ridiculous.
He really should have been Australias Prime Minister. He defeats these idiots with everything they say Kerry has valid points on everything said in this matter.
I remember this appearance back in 1991. Kerry Packer was one helluva great Australian IMHO. He was always very straightfoward and and told things as he saw them. Pity it fell on deaf ears . . . . . .
What a well spoken person God rest your soul in peace When a lion stand ? All the Haynes will run People-are born with class And you the person with high class
Thankyou so much for Posting This , I can remember Watching this with my Dad Live when it was shown on TV , Great Share , Awesome keep up the great work
I found this gem just over a week ago and have watched it 5 times it's a tour de force in dealing with incompetents, knowing what you're talking about and being totally confident, it would be very interesting had the situation been reversed, this lot of muppets would have had to resign, what a feller, the world needs more like this man.
Blistering performance by Mr Packer here, a giant among pygmies. His description (around the 1.10 minute mark) of the proceedings as an "intellectual wank" is brilliant and brilliantly funny.
