Thanks for sharing. In my opinion, you need twice the number of nooses and half the size. Did you keep this little spitfire ?

Nice video. I've seen similar traps with a two layer cover so the birds cannot reach the mice at all, so you never have an injured mouse during a trapping session. I think these were hand made, but still very effective. I am fairly certain I saw these on Ben Woodruff's channel. Gorgeous female American Kestrel. I'm working on learning more about falconry and have some hunts set up for this season to see if it's something I want to dedicate the time, effort and money into. Do you have any videos on weight management for Kestrels? They are such tiny birds, and I know a lot of people have not flown them and may not be able to do videos on their weight management.
@RedTalesFalconry

Every now and then a kestrel will injure the mouse. I don’t have any videos on weight management. Maybe I should document more of that aspect of it.

@@RedTalesFalconry Mercer Falconry from the UK touched on this a bit, but not in any real depth, unless I missed a video. I've heard others say Kestrel weight management is tough, even using a scale that measures in grams. In the Mercer videos from the UK, his Eurasian Kestrel was fluctuating by 10-15% of it's body weight on many days. His Eurasian Kestrel was mving between about 170 to 195 grams I think?

@@adamwilson2905 It is really pretty easy. Typically the regulations require it be a passage bird (less then a year). @@MD_falconry I figured as much just by the way you spoke. I really don't understand why you think DNR would yank a license for trapping a bird with what you perceive as to large of nooses. I follow every letter of the law, I really don't think our DNR would take a license for following their laws. They do not specify or mention anything about the size of the noose. They do acknowledge that there is always a risk when trapping and that is why the regs say I am responsible for the bird if it were to get injured while trapping.

@@RedTalesFalconry You use a kestrel to catch Starlings to feed a Harris Hawk. I've always found Harris Hawks so easy to train and will take a multiple selection of prey. Why don't you hunt with the Harris and let it catch it's own starlings (food). Catching a wild bird of prey and taking its freedom and stressing it out untangling from the trap, keeping it in a cage (aviary) and the process of manning the bird is not the way of a true falconer, your supposed to show respect to your bird (of prey). You would be fined here in the UK for doing such a act and fround upon other falconers. Release the kestrel back to where it belongs and wait till spring and get yourself a chick mate. Stephen Philpott not sure why you have to get hateful, this is very common here so your standards of a true falconer do not apply. Many would consider buying a bird not true falconry. The kestrel in the video has already been released after serving its purpose. It now has the skill and confidence to take out starlings so is a better hunter then when I trapped it. I've never had one injured, once the bird is caught I'm there in seconds to secure it. I have many other things that I do but working with birds of prey is a passion of mine that I enjoy. I do get binoculars and enjoy from a distance but there is nothing as exciting when a wild animal allows you in to their world to enjoy what they do with a front row seat. It is quite fascinating and many bird lovers also trap birds for scientific purposes. In many cases this is how things are learned to then make better societal changes to preserve wildlife.
