I had a lesson with Kevin just a couple of days ago - I played 'The Morning Dew' to show him what kinda level I'm at, then we simply talked for about 95% of the time with him demonstrating various things along the way. Kevin's insight is so inspiring, both into aspects of technique and into the music, and I feel I learned so much from that lesson and that it'll stand me in good stead as I continue to work at this great music :) thank you Kevin!
Magical! We just got home from seeing Kevin Burke and Cal Scott! I love the stories they tell in between songs, they are quite the comedians whether they are setting up the Celtic songs or just just enjoying the audience. Seek them out for a very fun night! Damn, I'd love to get lessons from him. Kevin Burke's the one I always seem to go back to when I'm learning a tune. He always sounds to me like he's improvising the tunes - like there's something new every time, even though he's played them thousands of times. Always discovering.
Not only is he a great player, he's also a great teacher! He taught at a fiddle camp in Maryland last summer and I got to be in his class; I learned more in one week about the style than I had taught myself in a year. If you ever get the chance to attend a workshop or session with him, do it!
I'll second that.... I took a couple of one-on-one lessons from him myself -- some of the best money I ever spent. Very patient and very clear instruction, learned a LOT about ergonomics and playing with less effort :)
Just as stated at the foot of the video, the tunes are: Pigeon on the Gate, Lafferty's (aka, Glen of Aherlow, aka The Girl I Left Behind), and The Morning Dew (aka the Hare in the Heather). All are in Edor. Tunes have many names -- as I saw on a T-shirt a while back, 500 tunes 1,500 names -- but that's no reason to confuse things by not checking . . . or is it intentional?
@TheDonaldido It's "Laffertey's". "The Starting Gate" is the name for the set (a lovely set at that) that includes "The Ladies Pantalettes, and , I think, "The Pullet".
Mr Burke plays it so incredibly great that I wanna get drunk and have a fist fight in a local pub with a stranger for woman that I saw 1st time in my life...oh the video is ended I'm back to so called normal.
The reel is actually called Lafferty's (amongst many other things) the title "The Starting gate" was used to describe the whole set which also includes "Boy's of portaferry" and a couple of other tunes.
