Main reason they let go of Ayton was due to concern of him staying engaged as assuming he will get less touches with offense focused on Booker and KD. They thought they needed someone who strictly focused on rebounding and setting screens while being capable of making plays when demanded. So they set their eyes on Nurkic. What ended up happening was Nurkic actually involved himself in the offense too much. He believes he is a Jokic despite his inability to be a threat from anywhere on the court and when he had the ball. It was easy for opponents to game plan against him ball handling. When he had the ball all they had to do was stay attached to everyone else and prevent them from getting any separation. By the time they caught the ball it was easy to contest or strip them. Name one play maker in the league who doesn’t have outside shot which forces defenders to run at him to contest allowing for him to exploit that and finding teammates. The other play makers if they don’t have outside shot they can drive in and dunk or get easy layups which forces defenders to prevent that allowing them to find open teammates. With Nurkic all you have to do is be happy he has the ball as a defender and just prevent his teammates from getting open often times with an extra defender helping. Every time Nurkic had the ball his teammates worked extra hard just to lose defenders. By the time they got open and get the ball someone was in their face.

KD is still a great player and he has won championships. We need to see team and coaching improvements. Hopefully with that we go further next year.
