I hope my dog came from a kennel like this one! Watching videos like these inspired me to start cooking for my dogs, but it is tough to give them that much variety when you only have 2. If anyone could put me into contact with my dog's trainer Terence Nevin, I would really appreciate it.
I wouldn’t usually say this, as I am quite active in the anti-greyhound racing movement, but this is the kind of trainer that I wouldn’t mind actually meeting and having a conversation with. In an industry riddled with corruption and abuse, There are a number of trainers who do genuinely care for their dogs, and it shows in this case. Those kennels look amazing as far as kennels go, actual plush beds, what looked like toys, lots of space, an air conditioned system, some kind of substrate (looks like sawdust or the like) on the floor, a large team of handlers; a far cry from the standard kennels that you see- bare concrete floors, two to a kennel, muzzled at all times, shredded paper for bedding, etc. I even spotted a dog sprawled out quite comfortably in the panning scene! Greyhounds have such thin skin that they are prone to what is commonly called “kennel sores” from the hard floors, so seeing a dog genuinely comfortable is heartening. The outdoor area is also very different, using sand as a base, again, not common, but I’m sure provides great stimulation in the form of digging! As a raw feeder myself, its also good to see a more balanced feed than the standard mince/egg/sliced pan bread meals or solid kibble along with a healthy mix of supplements and veggies added in (though I would recommend leaving tomatoes out of the mix as the acidity can cause tummy upsets). There are a lot of issues with the greyhound racing industry, the overbreeding of dogs, culling of pups who won’t make the cut, killing of almost 6000 healthy dogs a year for not being fast enough or for minor injuries, doping of dogs, over/underfeeding on race day to alter results, racing dogs with injuries, exporting dogs to countries with little/no animal welfare laws, etc. on top of substandard housing and feeding. The IGB decided to reject the findings of the report they commissioned and praised, and because of the ongoing issues I will still campaign against the cruelty until such a day as it can be guaranteed that all greyhounds are being treated as the amazing companions they truly are. If a trainer like Mr.Hutton truly loves his dogs, he will join the fight for stricter regulations and punishments for the atrocities witnessed across the world. He has already improved the standard when it comes to the dogs in his care, I would hope he speaks up and tries to make a positive change in the lives of other greyhounds.
Zoe the Zoologist greyhounds get treated better then most humans mate, and they actually love racing. It’s a really good sport that is really on the up here in Australia.
Well the sport is definitely getting better but unfortunately some dogs get hurt and may have to be put down …. It’s heartbreaking and I have had to witness it but it’s stilll a great sport and the dogs get treated great these days !❤
