On the eve of John Giles' 80th birthday, two-time Ballon d'Or winner Kevin Keegan joined Nathan and John to chat about the Liverpool v Leeds rivalry and their famous dust up at Wembley #OTBGiles80
I grew up watching these boys now I'm in my mid 50s. I recently had a chat with a young Leeds fan and he was shocked when I could name the great Leeds side 1 to 11. He said his dad used to talk about them. Great days.
@Mr X Momentous side sir, Real hard grafting football players who played proper Carpet football and never complained of tiredness or the state of the pitch unlike today's Mamby Pamby and prima donnas gangs.
I am in my late 50's too. Loved that league. Never missed Match of the Day or the Big Match. One of the charms of that era was we could relate to the players. They were lads you could meet in a pub and have the crack with. I have no interest in today's football. Haven't watched a premier league game in over 15 years. No character in it.
Sprake,Reaney,Cooper,Bremner,Charlton,Hunter,Lorrimer,Clarke,Jones,Giles,Gray My all time best Leeds team, I still maintain was the best team ever in British football stood in the Lowfields Road stand with my dad at 6 years old.
It is nice of Kevin keegan to come on n say that after Johnny lamped him one in that final shows his character 2 great great players Keegan never stopped running. Great finisher n Johnny best passer of a ball n great shot on him , the game needs players like them 2 greats
Kevin was kicked from pillar to post by Leeds that day and the ref did nothing that is why he took his shirt off , ref should have had the ten week ban .
They targeted him, but Liverpool targeted Alan Clarke. Johnny Giles was a Rolls Royce; who very kindly came to my beloved Baggies and lit the fuse that led to the great sides we had until Laurie Cunningham left for Madrid and Robson left for Manchester United. Bert Millichip and Sid Lucas gutted that team and deprived us of a championship by being cheap.
Johnny is right about the big suspensions.... that match in 1974 was a huge TV highlight of that season. That's why Billy and Kevin got such huge suspensions. The brawl was secondary.. the shirt rippings was what they were punishing. Typical FA.
I agree that Leeds United were a great team. But not the best ever. The Brazil team in the 1970 World Cup was out of this world,I doubt that Maradona would of got in that team, forget the goal against England in 1986,not one England player made an effort against that cheat, who earlier hand balled a goal !.
Keegan was an overall better player than Beckham!.Beckham a great passer of the ball, but like Ronaldo would not of lasted 5 minutes in the era of Keegan going back from the 70s.
This was when football was football as I know it. 2 footed tackles. 1970 FA Cup final replay at Manchester, Peter Osgood tackled Jack Chalton hard and put him flat out on the ground. Jack got up and kicked Osgood and he went down and I don't think either player got booked.
I was at Hampden Park the night Celtic beat Leeds in the European Cup. I thought Giles was Leeds best player that night but Celtic were another planet.
