This is Kevin Moore's original demo for "Space-Dye Vest" which was done along with another track called "Blanket." SDV was subsequently recorded for "Awake."
Have always said the same of him. Although I love DT up to the point when Mike left, I've always felt if Kev wouldnt have left, they would have had a totally different trajectory. All of the albums with him on them are all my most favorite DT songs. Derek and jordan are great, but I'd trade both for Kev any day of the week!! Side note, super cool to hear the different sample clips used. Would love to know the reasoning behind the changes.
@@jasondotson6224 Hiya. I do music production and can probably offer some insight based on what bands tend to do in the studio. The different samples were used when Kevin recorded the demo, which may have been well before they chose the sample patches that would be used in the studio to record the album. I think that when they decided to put the song on the album they kept his song structure and used all the selected album samples for continuity's sake, and to also support the fact that the live band would be included in the final version of the song. I agree that Kevin is a unique composer and in an alternate universe it would be really cool to hear what DT would sound like if Kevin and Mike were still members to this day. :)
100% agree. I can’t stand Rudess. He has talent and precision for sure, but he is so mechanical and predictable. Moore had such interesting compositions and Sherinian was given a raw deal (especially when you see what he did in Planet X and his solo records).
I always felt like this is the end of (the first phase of) Dream Theater and the beginning of Chroma Key. It's the end credits to Awake and to the relationship between Kevin and the DT guys. Thinking about it this way, this song hurts me thrice (lyrics, music and context). In a good way.
Almost 3 pm, been drinking since yesterday. Somehow I ended up here and just wanted to write something. Love the song. It's more than a song for me somehow. Can't even explain.
korg wavestation (wavesequencing) and korg m1 piano (probably from wavestation card piano....same sample), and sampling. this track would better be the opening of dead air for radios...same harmonies as colorblind and on the page...same sampling style (sampled voices from radios and tv), same style of singing, same dark atmospheres.... .....this is a foundamental track to understand moore style.
To me, this is, unofficially, the first Chroma Key song, just with James LaBrie’s vocals on the released version. Kevin Moore basically laid out the blueprint for that project with this song (the last track on the Awake album interestingly enough). Just to think that if the band knew KM’s true feelings and intentions about Space Dye-Vest, Mike Portnoy would’ve cut it off the album.
@@davidzoliana That's not what you said. You said "The best Album was with him. The other albums were no more Dreamy." When Dream and Day Unite wasn't Dreamy.
I don't know why, but, this version is bring more 'emotion' than final version; sad, angry, grief... I can feel the pain from the way Kevin play & singing. another underrated DT song and great song from Kevin Moore :(
I came here Every Time that i Lost the faith in the life, or when i lost someone, when I get lost about love or an relationship ... Just happened again today, now I'm feeling Lost... Again
Emotions are way more important than technique. Rudess is a great instrumentalist but I feel nothing listening to him. For me Kevin is better than Derek and Derek is better than Rudess.
@@cesarcampos8746 thats funny. well you prolly hate prog then your just a metalhead. Quit calling yourself a dream theater fan. It is one of if not their best songs and one of the best songs of all time.
"And I'll smile and I'll learn to pretend, And I'll never be open again And I'll have no more dreams to defend, And I'll never be open again Miss You Kevin!
The finished product of space dye vest should have been Kevin's voice. I would thought as a band they would have all agreed on that. Instead It was the end of Kevin and dream Theater....
@@coldguto listening to the official multritracks now and i think youre right, ive heard this song dozens of times but never noticed the fact there's someone besides james singing alongside
Awesome! One of my favorite songs!!! Anyone have the references for the TV shows in the background? Seemed a little different from the recorded version too...?
Surprised to find they left this song 100% unchanged in the album version. I always found this song totally inspired and absolutely amazing, to me it's the best song in Awake. It really shows that inspiration always makes a change, even if you are actually doing something minimalist like this short piano riff. Inspiration is always a reflection of God, and you can find it here.
Thank You, Kevin; you are an inspiration to many. I teach my son this song with the classics in his piano repertoire. Again, I thank you for this classic!!!
I quit listening Dream Theatre after Kevin left... Maybe he was the true music soul for me... After his departure, I lost the musical spirit connection with the later sound...
I never really appreciated this song i was obsessed with the 7 string but now i appreciate it more and the artist in kevin. Great job. I prefer the finished version though but such a vision he has 🙌
There is anyhow I have had never been coming into this, to as of now I have already eye-awaken to this song. What an absolutely amazing circumstance that lands to hearing. Space-dye vest it is.
Huh? Lots of bands have done moody stuff like this. This song is very unusual for DT. They have no other songs that sound anything like this. Its a weird and dark melody.
