Windsurfing is a form of sailing, where a board is powered across the water by the wind.
Polynesians have been using boards with sails for hundreds of years. It wasn’t until the 1960s that windsurf board design really developed and it became the sport we know today.
Unlike surfing, windsurfing uses the wind to propel forward while surfing uses the force of waves.
This means you can practice the sport anywhere with a big body of water and wind, such as lakes, rivers, estuaries and, of course, the open ocean.

The 2014 AWT Quatro Desert Showdown at Punta San Carlos, Baja will go down in history as having the best conditions an amateur contest has seen… ever! The pro riders were drooling watching the semi-finals and finals go down in over-mast-high conditions. It was absolutely epic. Luckily for them a 30-minute expression session was held after the amateur final giving Morgan Noireaux, Casey Hauser and Russ Faurot the spotlight to shine, which they did.
1. AWT Quatro Desert Showdown: The 2014 AWT Quatro Desert Showdown in Punta San Carlos will go down as the most epic Pro/Am wave events in history. The event saw amazing waves and wind with competitors competing on sail sizes from 4.5 down to 3.5. The long heat lengths and super fair “second chance” bracket system has kept a smile on every riders face. Let's check out the action.
The AWT would like to dedicate the AWT Baja event to Andre Paskowski who passed away today. He truly lived life to its fullest even through hard times. His love for the sport of windsurfing was portrayed in his incredible windsurf film making. He inspired us and his legend lives on in our hearts.
2. The epic final was set featuring Joey Sanchez, Vickie Abbott, Jeff Albright and Sarah Hauser. These four riders really represented the rippers of the week. Abbott found a couple sick rides early but ended her heat a little early with a ride taking her into the rocks. Albright scored one of the heats highest scoring rides, but failed to duplicate it with a decent second score putting him in third position. The battle for the top spot came down to where the action happened on the wave. Sarah Hauser scored the biggest waves of the heat and hit some very critical moves just after Punta San Carlos’ famous Chili Bowl. Joey Sanchez picked off some amazing set waves and pulled some incredibly tight turns at the most critical sections giving him the victory. Congrats to Sanchez on the victory and Hauser on a well earned second place.
3. Levi Siver wins at the 2014 AWT Pistol River Wave Bash
4. Day three at the 2014 AWT Pistol River Wave Bash will go down as one of the most impressive contest days the US west coast has ever seen. The action across all divisions was intense and fiercely competitive with the wind gusting over 30-knots and sets rolling in constantly in the head-to-logo-high range. It was simply amazing.

Women's Division: The level in this division keeps increasing year after year. Last year's battle between Ingrid Larouche and Fiona Wylde has now expanded with Sarah Hauser upping her game and Carolina Butrich and Sam Bittner not far behind. This year it was also great to see Roz Thomson and Rhonda Gill join in on the action and fun, as this division is truly a driving force behind the spirit of the AWT.
