LOS ANGELES, May 8, 2014 - In the keynote address of Asia Society's 2014 National Chinese Language Conference, former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who speaks fluent Mandarin, cautions against five commonly held misperceptions of China and speaks of language as "a doorway to understanding."

True. Don't over mystify China, or any people or nation or culture for that matter, just because you have not taken the time to explore it or tried a little harder to understand it. Afterall, Chinese are people too, having the same basic human emotions, aspirations, feelings etc as other people's in the world. We should stress more on our similarities rather than differences. That's the first step to building connection and understanding.

13:29 is a good point that we should think about, bascially this sums up why learning another language (not just Chinese) is opening a doorway to understanding: "Mutual misperception is a very dangerous thing in the international relations." "Narrowing the perception gap or the misperception gap can reduce the problem to a manageable proportions." The misunderstanding often occurs between nations because people do not learn another culture, languages & customs etc. Ignorance and ego are some of our bad attitudes that prevent us human being from leaning and improve ourselves.

I did not know that Australians had the capacity to learn any language other than Australian Strine. My company forced me to go to that Nowheresville until I was senior enough to refuse to go and I sent junior executives instead. Still I am impressed by this "bloke" and he is one of the few that realized Australia's future is linked totally to trade with China and I also hope that Australia learns how to make something other people want.

He is a Westerner who speaks Chinese. He spent 5 years studying it. So he speaks/knows basic working Mandarin. He knows enough of China to understand what Westerners understand. Not more. But for 99% of Westerners he is a 'genius', because he speaks Chinese. Most Anglos (Brits, Yanks, Aussies etc.) don't even know English well. He is a politician, diplomat, businessman so understands China on those levels. He is speaking to an American audience so tailors even those basic perceptions to the American level. He might know more but isn't saying. I suspect many educated Chinese will respect his interest in China but be disappointed by his Western perspective. Westerners cannot be Easterners. East of Vienna to the Pacific, Eurasia is 'alien' to Anglo culture. He has studied, probably has a good 'working knowledge' of Chinese, but equally probably understands very little. Australia is maybe 200 years old as a settlement area. China is 4000 yrs old as s culture. Australia is the baby,the child, China the grandparent and the parent. Most Americans/Australians forget this or prefer not to acknowledge it. IMHO.
@elkhananeli
@elkhananeli 9 лет назад
Its all about psychology an mentality. Peoples in the East(East of Vienna) have different psychology from peoples in the West. Indigenous peoples of Asia, Australasia and the Americas also have different psychology, spirituality. I was brought up with boith East and West so I know from experience. That's all I'm going to say as I'm not into arguing the toss. Either you can find this out for yourself or you can leave it. End of conversation. Goodbye.

+elkhananeli I respectfully disagree. US and Australia has a much longer history than mainland China. mainland China has but some 60 or so years of history. It is not related to ancient China nor traditional Chinese culture. For that one needs to look at Republic of China, aka Taiwan or other areas where traditional Chinese moved to once mainland was invaded by Soviet based government. Mainland China is a soviet based country with western, soviet styled culture. It is rather young and untested. Countries such as US and Australia have far longer culture than mainland China.
@_cherly5097
@_cherly5097 7 лет назад
Mouse, I don't agree with you. Those people who moved to Taiwan or Hong kong had lost their Chinese tradition. They don't think they are Chinese. And it's very hard for them to get back because geographically they are not settling on locations where the traditonal Chinese civilizations are, or the resources are. And it is true that in terms of which government ruling, yes, the current party is young, it takes times to realize its own way to rule, but people in mainland didn't lost their root, the fundementals, like the way they think. Yes, they may lost traditions like politness and such temporarily. But if you think of China in its extremely long history, the recent 100 years is just short. There are numbers of periods in Chinese history that suffered from war. The recent 200 years is one of them. LIke the spring and autum periods, the three kingdom, they all have the length about 100,200 years. But Chinese always found their way to unify again and get back their traditions and be able to recover economically. It is due to its greatly established philosphies and strong adapability/embraceability of their culture. China will be back on its track.

@flightdoc9087
@flightdoc9087 7 лет назад
Really? The Communist Party as the Chinese government form, is inherently a part of the thousands of years old traditional culture? I don't think so. China as a country (not its culture / people) IS relatively new, and very flawed at that. It is your ignorance, that you must note.

Really good example of giving a speech : informative, interesting, homoress, etc . However, as a native English speaker made a faux,pas ( mistake ) - the idiom is 'throwing stones at glass houses ' not ' in ' as he said . Unless Australians say it like that..

Keven Rudd was all about symbolic gestures than substance , he didn't last 1 term in office, before his own party exiled him with good reason. Then after the labor party started tanking in the polls they were foolish enough to bring him back as leader, the voting public rejected him , its a pity he can't accept their decission. His convoluted diatribe might as well be spoken in Chinese, for all that anyone in Australia was able to decipher from his lenthy ramblings. The most articulate and unsubstancial waffle , if you can't dazzle them with brilliance, you can baffle them with bullshit.

@phillipryan8293
@phillipryan8293 4 года назад
@@maitlandbezzina2842 Kevin Rudd had to organize a think tank for ideas on how to progress , which was more of a celebrity lovefest, of little value to the broader Australian community and at taxpayers expense.. Economically Australia had come a long way under John Howard from %18 interest rates under Paul Keating to around %6 and unemployment rate of %3, which at the time l remember a builder said that the %3 was probably unemployable anyway . A budget now in surplus after a long road of recovery from record deficit compliments of the previous Keating lead government, which Kevin Rudd promptly commited to the NBN , a decade of recovery and progress taken in less than 3 years. And then the overspend and waste on the GFC. Solar hot water systems for sporting clubs , often 3 times more than required, school halls, and public halls, as well as the pink batt fiasco which cost lives and homes, too quick to spend without proper systems in place for implementation or accounting for the money being spent/wasted. This country is well rid of Kevin Rudd, it's just a pity he won't shut the hell up.

He's repeating phrases that he has used a thousand times before. Nothing necessarily wrong with that but he is also speaking them as quickly as he can to give the impression that his Chinese is better than it is. That’s irritating. Presumably, given the forum, there will be people listening to this lecture who are actually studying Chinese. Wouldn’t it have been polite to speak a bit more slowly? Wouldn’t it have been a bit more “humble”? I think so. He is talking to a group of future teachers. They had better understand that non-native speakers process language a little slower than native speakers. If you don’t know that about foreign language acquisition you don’t really know anything. The other irritating thing he does is wait, after he speaks Chinese, for a bit of oohing and awing from the crowd over the fact that a white person can speak Chinese at all. I wish he would quit doing that. Quite a few of us have worked for years just to be accepted as members of the speech community. The very LAST thing we want is the oohing and awing. It’s degrading and it interrupts communication. His Chinese sounds a bit flat too, btw.

+mrmoosedemeanerful You are mistaken and therefore invalid in your remarks. He speaks the same pace as he speaks english. When he is making a speech in english he does the same gestures, its called maintaining eye contact, and its a polite way to relate to your audience. Its something most western institutions will make sure you do to improve presentation style. If you had a clue you would know this. And anyways he knows enough chinese to speak at a steady pace. So why would he slow his chinese down? Many chinese do not slow theirs. But one thing I notice is that many like to critique. Meanwhile when asians speak english, nobody is critiquing the speed of their speech, be it a head of state or the every day person. This speaks volumes about the one criticizing and less about Kevin Rudd.
