The ex wife being dark and fat is explained by his eternal seven concept. Because the hottest women are married first 7s are bumped up to 10s when they look around themselves. Most men think that you can look beyond looks or that maybe if you get a less attractive woman her attitude will be better and learn in real time that some of the least attractive women have the worst personalities.
