The recent story about John Krasinski smack talking about a film with PTA, and PTA pulling him aside and telling him not to down talk another director's work, tells me that he likes to take the high road in these situations.
Kevin's entitled to his opinion like everybody else but his petulant and unprovoked attacks on Magnolia just came across as petty. He complained about directors like Tim Burton and Hal Hartley taking shots at his work for no reason but engaged in much of the same behavior. At least he owned up to it and admitted to being jealous.
Yes and no. If he was only that, he wouldn't still be around. He's very good at world building and people love his characters. That's how he stays in the game. People enjoy the Askewniverse.
@@jon8004 Oh well, consider me one of the few. I absolutely love Boogie Nights, but Magnolia is a dog turd. With that said, there are quite a few people who will admit what a steaming pile that movie really is. .. There's a podcast called 'One F'ing Hour' who explain it in thorough detail as to why. Look em' up. They make a strong argument .. they're pretty funny critics on many fronts too so you might enjoy them even if you don't agree with them. I can't spell out the 'F' word or I get deleted. The algorithms don't enjoy me.
I think Dogma is one of Kevin Smith's better pictures honestly. There are some interesting theological ideas and satirical elements in there but unfortunately his juvenile dick and fart joke style and slavish devotion to comic book tropes holds it back. Magnolia is in a completely different category, comparing the two is like comparing a filet mignon in a five star restaurant to a hamburger from a fast food joint.
Dogma was shit. I only remember it because of how bad it was. Magnolia is one of the great films of all time. Like comparing da Vinci with hunter Biden.
Huge Kevin Smith fan here. I'm also a 'Magnolia fan', lol. I can't believe I said that. I did like the movie, but yeah, I never did understand the frogs.
Na.. The movie still sucks. Pretentious nonsense. Just watch Boogie Nights instead. I can't stand people who go on about Magnolia .. calling it a 'Cinematic Operatic Masterpiece'. 😂give me a break. It's crap.
@@jon8004 Oh give me a break. It's not 'challenging' it's just artsy fartsy, self indulgent gobbledygook. A bloated, unfocused, mess of a movie. It's complicated, not complex. There's a difference .. and in that way, in my view, it doesn't work nearly as well as the visceral and hilarious Boogie Nights. Which is actually a layered and complex film in my opinion. Just because a movie is complicated doesn't mean it's 'challenging'. Sometimes it just means it's overly stuffed, and pretentious. But he's also comparing himself to phony pseudo intellectuals who are more concerned with impressing their audience with hollow theatrics and verbal gymnastics than conveying anything of real substance. .. Self indulgence is bad when it's bad. Which in my view, Magnolia is a bad movie.
