God put the movie in the hands of the devil because the movie was blasphemy XD P.S. I love Dogma its my favorite Kevin Smith film and def my favorite Religion-themed movie.
@@preposterousrhinocerous9951 it's so awesome how even the cameos take potshots at expectations. In the initial scene, where Loki convinces a nun to become an atheist, that nun was played by Betty Aberlin, who to my generation was "Lady Aberlin" on Mr Rogers :D (she did small roles in a few of Kevin's later films as well)

he's honest to a point. he's not gonna blow his meal ticket. but yeah, he was pretty honest at first. in fact, I used to say Clerks was one of the most honest movies I ever saw. anybody who worked minimum wage would relate. But he's not gonna blaspheme the studio gods.
I can't imagine a "Dogma" sequel without Alan Rickman... everyone in the cast was great, but Rickman just made it for me. "Sweet JESUS!! Did you have to use the whole can?!?!?"
“I’m not the f-g story.” The joy of Kevin Smith is that he has humility and a rightheaded outlook, Combined with an unusual willingness to frankly examine his own emotions. He’s an American treasure, and shit like that.
they all had to have known about Harvey. Smitty's just downplaying it. pleading ignorance. just like how nobody "knew" Phillip Seymour Hoffman and, I'm shocked to hear, Owen Wilson liked playing with needles. the whole Frat Pack had to have known. for all I know they share needles. They don't care as long as they're making oodles of cash. Harvey was all those guys meal ticket. Didn't Uma Thurman tell QT about Harvs and he blew it off? suddenly everybody's shocked. acting...
"My movie about angels is owned by the f*&king devil." That crushes me. "Dogma" was my gateway to Smith and to hear that Weinstein owns it makes me sick.
Honestly a dogma sequel, set in the world but nothing else, about the movie industry it called Faust about a movie maker signing a deal with the devil to get famous and then it works
@@Eyecyou64 yeah, it would be neat; use the angels as supporting plot elements and ultimately the betrayal of weinstein. Did weinstein appear to Kevin as a benevolent God of Hollywood ,a genie, or was he so desperate for his big break he signed in blood with the devil from the start?
I absolutely love and respect Kevin Smiths self awareness. One of the only directors who just make movies for fun, doesn’t care if he profits from them or if they are critically acclaimed, he’s just out there with his camera, fucking around.
nah. when his movies flop he takes it pretty hard. he really doesn't understand why his movies suck now. I think it's the Weed. I don't think he's reached that level where he can function stoned.
I highly doubt "Harmful Harvey" will live much longer. Hopefully when the 'ol dinosaur croaks the rights wll be easier to acquire from (whoever takes over) his estate & Kevin has time to do something for the 25th anniversary . . .
@@akkual Pope Francis would probably find it funny. The Catholic Church never had an issue with it. I love Kevin simply because he tells the truth about life,he does not lie about HW .most people lie about HW because the do not want to be know that he was a friend
@@itheuserfirst3186 Ofc not but lots of Hollywood "elite" fawned and lick Weinsteins ass when he was on top and when #metoo hit they acted like they never heard of him. Smith doesn't try to whitewash that he did movies with Weinstein.
People that hate on Kevin make me sick. This dude was such a major influence on my cinema experience. Right at an age where I started realizing there were movies outside of the major Hollywood blockbuster bullshit. Love this man and everything he’s made. Yes including Jersey Girl, Tusk, AND Yoga Hosers
he owns jay and bob and the characters were in a way public domain (Jesus, Satan etc) he can just create a new alagoric plot add some new angels with new cast members. Call something else and everyone will know what it is
Rufus is the big problem for that. Plus Alan Rickman is dead now. No Rufus, no Rickman........ you gotta have those 2 guys. No go. Clerks 3 is right there for the taking. Kidnap Jeff Anderson, if you have to.
@@charleebrown7188 not necessarily, Kevin Smith took Medatron from DC's Sandman, just have two new Angeles like method man and Redman make it about the devil cast Patrick Stewart etc do a preacher like story. It's Christan theology lots more characters to choose.
@@charleebrown7188 clerks 3 is dead cause of Disney owning the rights to Dante and Randal. You could still do it just name everything different and hope when Jay and Bob show up, that Disney doesn't sue Kevin Smith for ripping off Kevin Smith.
This is possibly a bit contrary to what Smith said in the past. I recall on one of his podcasts a while back when he and Scott Mosier were talking about a potential Clerks 3, they mentioned that they were doing an independent audit of the Weinstien company over Clerks 2 royalties. Smith stated that he spoke with Bob because he refused to talk to Harvey anymore. Now, this could be due to an argument they had in 2011 during the Red State screening but Kevin said he heard some, if I recall right, horrible things about Harvey and he wouldn't deal directly with him anymore. I think this was around 2012. Back then it sounded like Smith had heard rumors. I can't seem to find any old podcasts available since they're all behind a paywall now, this is all just from memory so IDK.
Maybe when the rights get worked out we can get a Dogma Criterion release. View Askew has always released great special editions and the Dogma special edition is already pretty great, I just think Kevin deserves more than one movie in the Criterion collection, and this or Clerks would definitely be a worthy addition!
Technically, Dogma is the third part in the ADGTH franchise. Or at least it is in my imagination :P (ngl, I wanna see a version of Dogma where Charlie and Itchy are Bartleby and Loki)
He should do a movie called "Amgod" and it should be about a quest to get a Dogma sequel going, against a powerful movie producer who thinks "I am god".
I met him while hitchhiking through LA and I can honestly say for someone at 830 in the morning walking his dog, to take time out his day and talk to me, a fan, was absolutely beautiful. I got to geek out with my favorite director about spiderman, my favorite super hero, before he bought me an uber to the edge of LA city. Honestly best day of my life
Kevin might be the best public speaker of all time. So quick and off the cuff while reading and commanding a room. People who do that would be wise to study his style.
I gotta be honest, he kept saying who knew? Everyone knew, it was an open secret, but since everyone wanted something from him everyone turned a blind eye.
I feel like most people probably knew but there are also people who live in a bubble and don't take note of things not directly related to themselves. It's hard for emphatic people to comprehend this but there are many people walking around who don't know and don't care about what other people are doing.
I'm sure a lot of people who knew would have also been risking their own careers and livelihoods by stepping to him. This man had a LOT of power. It's easy to say in hindsight (and for future reference) that that's no excuse, and it's not, but I'm sure it's not as simple as "people knew and they didn't say anything."
Knowing is one thing. Having suspicions is another. Either way, proving anything is the hard part. People could have spoken up, but they would likely have been crushed and their careers ruined if they couldn't provide any evidence.
I feel he had to have heard more. I remember watching that Jon Favreau show Dinner for 5 & the chick from Chasing Amy said something about Harvey. Where's her career today?
@@themagictheatre2965 It's possible they knew, but it's also possible that they had heard rumors and dismissed them and it only became a clear picture when it all came out, that "I should have realised" moment.
@@daved2352 Joey Lauren Adams was one of the leads of one of Smith's movies. Do you really think that she would feel comfortable saying something on a television show like Dinner For Five but not to her director? If you think that, you don't understand the film industry. The director is the first one to know when stuff like that happens. There is nobody the actors trust more than their directors. That's how we know Tarantino knew, because he confronted Weinstein about it, but failed to go public because he is a despicable coward.
Even at award shows people talked bad about Harvey, but more like he was an asshole. Everyone seemed to know he was an ass and a philanderer - I seriously doubt he advertised that he was a rapist. Just not sure where that would come up in conversation.
@@TitoTimTravels "I seriously doubt he advertised that he was a rapist." His victims did though. Many of them told people. And the ones that chose to tell people had their careers ended by Weinstein and his goon squad. And fuckers like Smith and Tarantno did nothing. Joey Lauren Adams and Mira Sorvino were both promising young actors with bright futures who disappeared into obscurity because they were preyed upon by Harvey and had the sheer nerve to tell people about it. And there are dozens more just like them. And all of their directors knww. Because when you are an actor and you get raped and tell people, one of those people is going to be the director.
Dude has done a complete 180 in his life. Eats ridiculously healthy (I think he's even a vegan now?), exercises, and is super conscientious about everything he puts in his body.
Although I love Kevin, I think he's being a bit disingenuous here - the rumours within Hollywood went far beyond that of him being a 'philanderer' at the time. It was an open secret he'd been assaulting and taking advantage of people and Kevin would have known of this.
You'd be amazed at how easily that stuff is covered up unless you just happen to know the right ppl. I wouldn't necessarily absolve Kevin Smith here, but I wouldn't necessarily assume automatically that he knew. That being said, philanderers with money and power like that seem to ignore the need for consent so it wasn't really a leap from one to the other and that shouldn't have been as "shocking" as Smith says here.
Im not happy with WHY there isnt a Dogma Sequel but I am kinda glad there isnt, that movie is so freaking good I love that its this self contained thing.
So Harvey is in jail, he can't sell that movie back to KS whilst in prison? Technically he could, but like KS state "...owned by the devil". ♥ this movie.
Kevin definitely has my sympathies along with pretty much everyone else that Harvey wronged over the years which every time I hear his name becomes an even longer list. I hope at some point Kevin gets the ownership of his old movies back so he can decide whether to rerelease them so people can enjoy them or keep them to himself so that people don't have to think about Harvey anymore.
I few months ago I realized that Dogma wasn't available anywhere and I was wondering why that might be. Well, that settles it for sure. Fucking Harvey Weinstein.
Makes since about Dogma, I worked at video thrift stores on and off for 4 years and I’ve only seen three copies of that movie; people won’t let those dvds go. I have customers still asking for a copy of it.
Is Harvey broke yet? Can we crowd source buying Dogma yet? Or make it a movie. Jay and Silent Bob kidnap Harvey for revenge for his victims but also getting dogma. This could work. I can see Jay trying to waterboard H but fumbling it and its a mild inconvenience. Lol
While making that movie would be in poor taste for a variety of reasons, that was really creative. I'm genuinely kind of impressed. As for your question, I doubt Weinstein is anywhere near broke. He was probably one of the richer people in Hollywood when he was arrested. I'm pretty sure he's lost more than half of his wealth since all this happened (mostly due to his divorce), but he likely still has over 50 million. I would say wait for the inevitable civil suits to bankrupt him, so that Dogma has to be sold off to pay his debt, but Weinstein is likely to die in prison before this happens. The guy was physically falling apart before he was sentenced, and now it's even worse.
It’s amazing that Kevin didn’t realize instantly that Harvey was manipulating him when the article broke. He’s really still such a naive person after all these years in Hollywood.
He’s not someone who likes to think the worst about people. He has also admitted that his relationship with Harvey is complicated - he had issues with him even before the scandal broke, for personal and business reasons, but he also acknowledges that Harvey put him on and changed his life.
he used to be a lot lot fatter and he wore really baggy things and jean short things to deal with that and i believe he thought he was fooling people into thinking he wasn't so gigantic. think facial expressions were meant as a distraction also but he also is just incredibly expressive so could simply be that/his sense of humour. just his "brand" now to a large degree. he might be able to pull off a suave & sophisticated look since he lost weight and while that might be a fun look for like a cameo in something who is going to buy that guy doing any of the things that kevin does regularly?
Several people in hollywood have said that EVERYONE in hollywood knew about weinstein. So I find it quiet incredible that somehow it missed Kevin's ears.
Cool...what's interesting is this was suggested after another video of Smith making comments about Weinstein...except, he tells a story where they interacted at the premiere of Red State. So his timeline is wrong or he's just making things up to sound cool. I suspect the latter as his story about Prince turned out to be completely untrue.
Why though? I’m assuming rapists normally don’t go around bragging about raping people. How would Kevin have known? He also strikes me as someone who would have been horrified by that revelation, had Weinstein confided in Kev, he would’ve done something about for sure!
@@karlvarnsen2184 because of all the people in his production team who knew, all the women who told other people what had happened, all the money being settled to pay them off. I believe a huge percentage knew about it, and also there’s a huge amount of people who engaged willingly to secure them acting work.
@@katesteventon5296 Given that several of Weinstein's accusers (including Rose McGowan) say that Kevin and his crew were unlikely to know the full extent of it, then I would err on the side of believing them. I've only heard about it in relation to Smith and Affleck, though. Can't speak for the rest of them. Smith was never a part of Weinstein's inner circle.
I know there’s this narrative people are fond of where seemingly every Hollywood A-lister pretty much sat in on all of Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assaults and were fully complicit, but that’s not how reality works. Like Kevin says in this video, he had a reputation but it’s too easy to just look back in hindsight and say “Well _of course_ the guy was a serial rapist! _Duh!”_ Without actually witnessing anything first hand it was all just rumors and hearsay back then.
@@shelbyvillerules9962 Please quote me the text where I said or implied "everybody knew." I'm sorry, I'm not going to engage with someone unwilling to have a good faith discussion.
@melnium Well you seem to imply that it was pretty much an open secret that even Kevin Smith himself was party to... obviously the first part of my original reply was an exaggeration in order to make the point but in that regard I was addressing more the overall conspiracy theory than your exact words.

There must be a way to get dogma back though, there's gotta be some kind of legal trickery you can throw around and get the rights thrown back. And if not, if Kevin Smith made a film starred Jay and silent Bob about religion and told us all its Definitely not a sequel to Dogma, we'd know. Like how he confirmed that Justin long in Jay and Bob reboot is playing the same character from Zack and Miri.
I would love to see Kevin get the rights to Dogma back somehow and release it digitally, who knows maybe when the Weinstin Brothers are gone from this earth in a weird twist Kevin is able to buy the rights to his movie back
He told you in the video. The point was that he was testing out who knew what, and who had talked to the press. He knew that Kevin likely wouldn't have talked to him if he knew, or would have at least told him off. Smith and Weinstein did not part ways very amicably, and Weinstein likely thought Kevin had heard something after their public falling out.
