Mascaras is one of those guys who's either overrated or underrated depending on who you talk to. Yes, he no-sold when he was given nothing and never put anyone over he wasn't supposed to, But he also had great timing and always knew how to hold the crowd's attention. Honestly, as far as guys who only knew how to put themselves over go, I'll take Mascaras over 80s and 90s Piper most days. I think a lot of the people who still rag on Mascaras these days are just wannabe-snobs who read Foley's book and think it's hip to say Mascaras sucked.

@@maraviyoso8473 Being down on Mascaras because he refused to sell is a complaint of wrestlers now believed and continued by fans who don't really know but want to believe a wrestler they are a fan of or because they dislike Mascaras. It is an opinion which somehow others feel is a fact because they read so and so said it. As for a wrestler stating he didn't sell so they don't like him, that is a legitimate statement because they were in the ring with him. None the less, it is also an opinion possibly based on their having to lose to him or envious of his standing in the wrestling business. He is one of the three most popular luchadors of all time, he is the most internationally successful Mexican wrestler, he was a top traveling attraction all over the world. He seemed to know and execute more holds than most any other wrestler and performed holds no other wrestler did. He had an outstanding physique, a great look, and appeared superior to most everyone he got in the ring with. He had a reputation to protect as well as his earning potential. No one seems that upset that Brody failed to sell or get pinned along with holding up and stiffing promoters, how about Hansen, Abdullah the Butcher, or Thesz. There are many others but it seems the same rules aren't applied to them. Why ? It's too bad jealousy, envy, and opinions of others which some believe are facts have people not seeing him for what he was truly was, one of the very best wrestlers of all time.

Mil Mascaras was a legend who made wrestling magazine covers regularly back in the early 1970s. He photographed perfectly and I always wanted to see him in action. Like Ric Flair, he had the same match over and over with his signature finish being a top rope flying cross body which was Ricky Steamboats' finish as well. Kind of hard to kick out of that finish if that's what the fans came to see? I think Foley and others are being too critical of a man who kept himself in top shape and headlined so many wrestling events for 55 years.

I’ve got a bootleg figure from Mexico that is a Mil diorama with every mask he’s taken in his career (could be Blue Demon, haven’t looked at it in a while) Folks need to understand that Mexican wrestlers were like 10x as over at home than here, so that power they weren’t trying to dilute any. Mil Máscaras drew a lot of money around the world. He just was serious about his business and at his peak he definitely was great. It's just that he worked long after his peak still wanting to be treated as a top guy. But he loved wrestling, specially Japanese wrestling and over there everyone respects him. He was on the same level as Andre the Giant or an Inoki. He was a special attraction in a time that athletic lucha style was an exotic style.

But not enough funding by his country's government, so decided to do bodybuilding & weightlifting. And, then a former trainer or Olympic partner introduced him to a wrestling opportunity. Thanks Mil for making wrestling AWESOME, & his ring entrance theme song too 💯💯💪🎉

I love how everyone suddenly has an "informed" opinion about Mil Mascaras, based on one chapter of Mick Foley's book. The guy had been around since the 60s, was an international star who drew thousands to the arena and to theaters to see his films. he did jobs, when they meant something. he didn't do jobs just so he could put over someone who didn't have the same rep and without being compensated the way a legend should. he was a smart businessman, who was over for nearly 50 years, not just 5-10 years, in one promotion, in one country. Mil drew massive crowds throughout Latin America, Japan, the US and elsewhere. His brother, Dos Caras, was the better wrestler; but, Mil was the attraction people paid to see. It wasn't Lutteroth who created the gimmick; it was the publisher of the El Santo comic (which sold massive numbers, in Mexico). They introduced a new heroic masked wrestler and hired Aaron Rodriguez to portray him and he became a legend, joining El Santo and Blue Demon in films, as well as his own series of films. When Eddie Einhorn tried to start the first national promotion, in the 70s (The IWA), the person he chose to be his champion and face of the upstart company was Mil Mascaras. So, learn a little history before taking one wrestler's opinion (repeated ad nauseum on the internet) as gospel.

Before Mil Máscaras most wrestlers worked with very slow movement and. They had never seen a heavy weight wrestler use the flying maneuvers and never wrestled a man that was called the man of a thousand holds for a reason….and it took almost a decade for the American wrestlers to learn some of his flying maneuvers and head dives from up the top rope or through the ropes..or sling shot himself and do a body press at high speed….the first time the then champion super star Billy Graham wrestled him ..Billy Graham was totally manhandled and complexly incapable to counter his moves and Billy Graham was suffering in the ring to the point were the match was stopped before the count due to a hidden clause that in the New York sports commission no Mask man was to ever be allowed to become champion….then came the re-match and the second time around Billy Graham was getting and even worse beating than the first time and when it looked like mascaras was setting him up for the pin..out of no where Bob Backland entered uninvited (except for the promoters) in the ring and started to hit the already beaten and beading Billy Graham and thus prevented Mascaras from winning the belt…as a result mil mascaras was asking Bob Backland what the H was he doing in the ring…..and needless to say….Billy Graham was finished and totally embarrassed by Mil Mascaras…and even though there was never a champion so outmatch to every move ( a match for which Mil Mascaras had trained diligently for over a year). Then …there was no third time it was decided that Billy could no longer continue being the champion and Bob Backland “supposedly earned the next fight”….just for interrupting the outcome of the Mascaras fight…and Back Backland was suddenly the new Champion…..Billy Graham was a great champion but..he had very few moves and most were just power moves and full Nelson’s and he practically knew nothing about the Mascaras style and it showed very bad and most embarrassing during the match…I always liked the super star Billy Graham he used to call himself the man of the hour and the man with the Power….except that when he went against a guy like Mascaras who could do multiple different flips to Billy Graham who had no defense and no idea on how to wrestle against Mascaras who was just flipping and throwing Billy Graham all over the place treating him more like the ideal sparing-partner….which made Billy Graham look very bad in front of his full garden house………..
