Join Kew Horticulturist, Richard Moore on a walk around the Waterlily House at Kew Gardens! When it was built in 1852 this beautiful glasshouse was the widest single-span glasshouse in the world, built specially to house the giant waterlily, Victoria amazonica. This glasshouse houses a wonderful collection of tropical aquatic plants from around the world such as the iconic Lotus, Papyrus, and of course Waterlilies such as the incredible Santa Cruz waterlily all cared for and maintained by Solène Dequiret and the Palm House team.
Kew Gardens is a world famous Botanical Garden and one of the largest in the world with a collection of over 50,000 plants. As well as being one of the most beautiful ornamental gardens in the world the plant collections at Kew provide an invaluable resource for scientific research and along with the Millennium Seed Bank, Kew is working to conserve endangered and threatened plant species from around the world.

Fun story about this waterlily house. In the spring and summer of 2004 I was an intern at Kew. When all the staff were brought together to plant the bedding plants in front of the Palm House I was early and waiting for everyone else to arrive. I took a look in the waterlily house and someone driving by on a cart or a mower startled the group of guinea fowl that patrol the grounds. Two of them accidentally flew into the greenhouse. One made its way out again but the other was in a panic flailing about in the water and got itself stuck behind one of the planters on the far side of the entrance. I had to climb over the railing and lean over and grab the terrified bird by its feet and carry the flapping, terrified, creature outside. Your videos bring back great memories of my time at Kew. Thanks for posting them.

My favourite glasshouse at Kew! I've never been able to seen the underside view before and that is absolutely stunning! Even better at 0.75 playback speed for some calm calm vibes and to be able to enjoy it a little bit longer, couldn't stop smiling the whole time - thank you so much for sharing 🥰

Love all your videos, used to spend day visits at Kew back in the seventies, cycled there with a picnic in ruck sack. I no longer live in London so will prob never get there again. So thank you so much, truly beautiful videos.

Hello, thank you for watching! I would say the best time to visit is in the middle of summer and again towards the end of summer once the waterlilies have grown to there full size!
