+Tom thx American communists of that generation get a pass. All of Stalin's crimes were covered up by Churchill as the price for switching sides in WWII. They simply didn't know that the Soviets made the Nazis look like amateurs at mass murder.
wow this comment is 8 years old but absolutely..pete may have sympathized with communism but his intentions were pure..he loved the american ppl and God bless his ass
I'll never forget seeing them back in the '60's at a little club near Maple Leaf Gardens on Church Street in Toronto called the Fifth Peg. Sunday night was their last set and the small group of us gathered around them wouldn't let them quit. Finally, they stood up and led us all down a long corridor and out onto the sidewalk. We followed them up to the corner, and under the streetlight they did "Keys to the Highway". We embraced, and I know I had tears in my eyes.
my dad played this shit on vinyl. Us kids didn't undig it. In fact it fucked us up for about 30 years. And here I am, lovin it much love to all you people
Sonny Terry is THE reason I began to play harmonica. His playing is so alive, filled with real Soul. Sonny's harp together with Brownie's facile guitar and beautiful, rich voice made music that move me to my core to this very day. O Yes.
Thank you for sharing this image! We have added it to our entry about the Sonny Terry in the State Library of NC's online encyclopedia, NCpedia Emily Horton, Government & Heritage Library at the State Library of NC
Had the pleasure of seeing Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee in small venues in Vancouver twice in the 60's and 70's. Wish I could go back and see 'em again. Nothing like seeing great musicians up close and live.
Brilliant, love it all. Remembering with love when they ‘arrived’ in rural northland , New Zealand five decades ago. Everyone started blowing up the harmonica, amazing sound next to the steel guitar. Grateful fan here.
Great version! Love all the verses. Brownie McGhee did a fine job of singing, and Sonny Terry is amazing as he always was - love his harp and his whoops too!
23 people with different tastes. We all should respect each other. No matter the differences. I too have trouble understanding, but we're just different, and that's all.
@@charlessunu That poem makes me think of a certain leader. High though his titles, proud his name, Boundless his wealth as wish can claim;- Despite those titles, power, and pelf, The wretch, concentred all in self, Please excuse the poor copy/paste job, it's late.
how young are you? because America wasn't what you think, maybe in the arts it was and it was great if you are white but tell black men my age how it was…1967 high school class trip to D.C. 5 white kids and 4 black kids were at arlington we needed to use the rest room and as we were going in the men's room door an attendant said this bathroom isn't for you boys so we thought we read the sign wrong but then he told us us white men were allowed but you drakes have to go down over there…so in the America you say was so great? still had segregated rest rooms in 1967 in our nation's city…sorry but you were either sheltered or just too young or lived in an area that was better than most
@curtistembeck You're dead right, why hate when you can love. This music is awesome and it needed to be documented or it would die out with the explosion of rock n roll. These guys knew that and were smart enough to record as much as possible before it was gone if it were not for them we wouldn't be able to listen to such classics.THANKS FOR THE UPLOAD!
This is the song that changed my life when I saw them at Sydney Town Hall over 50 years ago . . . then I read Jack Kerouac's "On The Road", Freedom beckoned, and my world was never the same. Still travellin' home after all this time . . . one day I'll find it . . . This still gives me the shivers every time I hear it or sing it!!
@@homesickclifford1966 Man I don't have any idea how you managed to tell such an amazing story as that, the story of your life no less, in basically a paragraph. But man, that brought tears to my eyes. Holy crap the human spirit is something else! God bless you sir! God bless you! And thank you for telling your story. Talk about getting lemons, and making lemonade out of them. Wow! Just wow!
@@homesickclifford1966 God bless you sir. You deleted your reply, but I still got it in my email. I agree with everything you said. I wish you, and yours, nothing but the best. Keep on keeping on, and please don't ever change. ☺️👍
@@homesickclifford1966 BTW I think yesterday's voting results showed that there's still plenty of people out there who really care about our world, and the people in it. Besides themselves.

I absolutely love these two, and Seeger always makes me laugh with how white he is lol. It was a different era but a good man, don't get me wrong. The only thing I need in life is to learn how to play a couple blues riffs and keep practicing my blues harp and I'll die a satisfied man.
I saw them in a club in Hollywood round about 1970+- ... somehow got to go upstairs with them after the show. Milk with whiskey. Don't remember for sure which one of them was drinking that but I think it was Sonny Terry.
Pete Seger gave rise to the likes of Dylan. Like Guthrie did Seger. Seger brought an alternate universe of blues music to the living rooms of households across this nation before any of us knew British Invasion was more than just a revolution.
I love this song it makes me smile every day this song is like a part of my life where I just will never let go of and I will never forget this song... I'm holding on your rope got me ten feet off the ground and I'm here what you say but I just can't make a sound you tell me that you need me then you go and cut me down but wait you tell me that you're sorry didn't mean I turn around and Say
