The long-awaited, behind the scenes look at how we migrated from a Roland XP-30 keyboard to our use of Apple MainStage with plugins like Roland Cloud, XLN Audio Addictive Keys and Sonic Projects OP-X Pro-II and Pro-III.
Wow I had no idea what went into the keyboard playing. Thanks for the explanation. JP and Louis you're just an amazing player. Thanks again. Definitely sharing this.
It is so overwhelming to this 74 year old retired elementary school teacher, what these young kids of today are doing with their music. Louis, you are amazing. I have been following you and your band mates for about a year now and think you are amazing. Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us.❤️🙏👏❤️🙏👏❤️
Amazing hearing that classic emulation. The Van Halen / Cars / Who and basically anyone. Quite a deep dive into what is a very complex and misunderstood part of a band.
That was an amazing video. The fastest 30 minutes I have ever experienced. All those sounds created from those programs were unbelievable. I have a new found respect for Louis, you rock the house dude! Looking forward to more of your playing in the future.
That was awesome! Your quite a talent DAD! I liked the Paul McCartney looking over the LapTop LOl Just looks fun !Louis you seem like a Great fun person to chill with ! lol
If you can I would love to hear Lucky man from ELP (Emerson Lake & Palmer) as part of your setup, Keith's keyboard skills, Greg's guitar's and singing, and Carl's drumming & percussion were incredable, one of the first supergroups ,shame there is only Carl left alive now, they are missed.
TY JP and Louis for sharing this informative video so we can have a better understanding of how you create all the sound effects . Louis, ❤you are an amazing, knowledgeable, talented keyboard player . I'm looking forward to the live streams as you incorporate this new program into your music.❤
Please make a one on one video like this for each member of the band. I'm sure there's a lot of nuance to each player and instrument sound that a lot of us would find interesting.
Very cool. Louis, who are you going for in the game on Sunday. ...Please no 49ers. This was a very cool video J.P. This boy plays damn well and sure is getting tall. Take Care Guys
Really cool vid! Louis is a great looking, mature young man - beyond his years. Very cool to get some up close time with him, to see what he does! Great player, and the keys make the band even better, and more versatile. I would have loved to hear that Van Halen "Feels So Good" patch! And also Journey Separate Ways. Jump, Dreams, Feels So Good, Separate Ways, and Tom Sawyer. My Top5 All-Time Fave Keyboard Rock Songs! Oh. And and... Here I Go Again. Gotta throw that one in there. OK - you guys ROCK !!! Edit: And Subdivisions. LOL They keep coming into my head. Love The Cars too!
Just amazing, I really love the sounds, and Louis really knows how to mix them while I was listening to the video I was so relaxed I was falling asleep..sorry it was just great sounding..it took me 3 tries until I watched the entire video...just wonderful ❤️..
Once had an under $100.00 Casio keyboard I used to mess around with decades ago but never took it deep into the various sound controls but did have it hooked up to a 100 watt stereo system & 1 day 2 keys stopped working so it was donated after attempting to fix to no avail. Used to play Proud Mary & a few various others.
Just WoW. In 1973 ,as a 14 y/o ,I talked my parents into getting me a knock off version (couldn't afford the real deal) of a Hammond B-3. How things have changed. Incredible.
Ok that’s so cool very cool can’t wait to see you guys again I would love to see you guys at the GREAT NEW YORK STATE FAIR lol but That would be Awesome 👍✌️☮️💪🏻❤️
For now, we have these... Alex's 2022 Rig Rundown: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zwb2wLq4iIg.html and his 2023 version: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EfRiI55gdgg.html
The thing with MainStage is there's many ways to select a patch, and sometimes you can grab just the straight sound whereas if you select it from the library (as a channel strip preset) it will come with effects and it really helps it sound more like stock patches on hardware keyboards! Plugins make all the difference, but suddenly $29 becomes more....
We've got a few with more to come... Alex's 2022 Rig Rundown: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zwb2wLq4iIg.html and his 2023 version: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EfRiI55gdgg.html
Hello, great video guys! Louis did a great job nailing those keyboard parts. What OS are you using on your laptop to run Mainstage? I Am interested in downsizing my current keyboard rig and going with a similar setup. Sounds like you have most all the patches a classic rock cover band could use.
It's definitely a process to move from hardware keyboard to a Mac (MainStage) -> MIDI controller setup. Don't rush it, there will be lots to tweak and iron out. It's worth it, but difficult to happen instantly. Remember, we have a LOT of different plugins. Roland Cloud is for sure a solid starting point, OR, maybe you'd like to investigate the presets that can be purchased from individuals who make them for Top40 or Classic Rock bands. (Search on RU-vid...) Louis's Mac is an M1 so it's running the latest OS.
Great content. Enjoyed the deep dive. What about the steve winwood sound, "while you see a chance". So much in this video that I wasn't aware of. Not a keyboard player, but i found an old concertmate in the trash, and it works. How do most people record keyboards? Mic a speaker or straight in? Louis, start a channel
Oh boy, recording keys??? So, yes, something like a Leslie speaker for a Hammond B3 organ, would be mic'ed in a variety of ways. But keyboards now? It's all MIDI... it's just too convenient, as you can go in after the recording and delete little slips, move or extend notes... you don't even wanna know about quantizing... it's very synthetic, but ultimately, if done right, it's still "human" and yet greatly benefits from technology. It's not new though! The Atari ST and various other computers were recording MIDI and not sound directly from the keyboards since the mid-80s... These days, even AUDIO can be quantized... It just makes everything that these classic rock acts achieved with just 2, 4 and 8 tracks truly more amazing!
hey, bought Sonic Projects: greath program but not very user friendly, 159$CDN, not bad at all with everything you have. Can you make a video on how to install and use the program?
Is MainStage your VST host? On a software instrument channel strip, you’ll add the plugin. Sonic Projects has a lot of videos, likely some that show how to do exactly what you’re asking, and I’m certain they’ll help get you rolling if you need to contact them via email.
