Their potato wedges were fantastic. When our local KFC replaced them with fries, there was little left for me to return. I've since had other places' potato wedges and none of them ever came close to KFC's level of deliciousness.
Kings Hawaiian rolls are the closest to KFC's dinner rolls. Their biscuits were better when they were made from scratch. Yes when the biscuits first came out, they were made from scratch. I know this because I worked at KFC , and made their biscuits. Now due to sheer volume, they come to the stores frozen.
I use to go to KFC for their Baked Beans, Corn on the Cob, Strawberry Shortcake parfait and Chocolate parfait and their Potatoe Wedges! All they have discontinued. I have also discontinued my business at their restaurants.
@@RhettyforHistory I think you can see them at 1:20. They're sitting on top of the bucket. I guess they could be biscuits but at that time, in my area, they would have been the rolls which I remember as having a layer of melted 'butter' in the middle.
@@angela-ti1np that "butter" is what i remember most. i LOVED those rolls. The biscuits were pretty good when they first came out but now they are terrible
Harlan Sanders( The Colonel) use to drive around in a big white Cadillac, here in Kentucky, and visit all the Kentucky Fried Chicken Restaurants in the Louisville KY area and show the staff how to fix ' his chicken'. Thing is, Harlan didn't own Kentucky Fried Chicken, he was just a spokesman at this time but Corporate HQ in Louisville wouldn't say anything...they said ' You can't tell the former owner & founder not to do it!' LOL! Fun fact: There is only two (2) places left to get Chicken fixed the way Harlan fixed it....one is in the Experimental Kitchen at Corporate HQ ( It's tested against other ways of preparation) but regular folks can't get from there. The other place is in Simpsonville, KY ( outside Louisville) at The Claudia Sanders Dinner House, the last restaurant Harlan opened. His Mansion sets in front of Claudia Sanders.
You didn't mess with the Colonel. In his younger years he shot a man dead (in self defense, mind you). It was a competitor that was harassing him and pulled a gun on him. Colonel was having none of that 😂
Thank you for watching Tammie! There might be a few extra people having KFC today. I haven't had it in forever but I did have it while I was making this video.
I haven't had Taco Bell since 1994. It's not that I didn't like it but there some ingredient in it that I can't have. I think it's in the sauce and even when I tried to order it without the sauce it would still occasionally happen. It's strange but I don't have that issue with anyone else and it took me a long time to figure out what was causing the issue.
They also used to have baked beans. I loved pairing them with coleslaw. But the best thing they discontinued was the worst decision they ever made: honey bbq wings (from early 2k’s).
Your right.I remember also the BBQ chicken. It was fried with bbq sauce. It was good.Think this was 70s,80s. Back in the 1960s in San Antonio we went to Young bloods Fried Chicken on Broadway near the Witte Museum. When we were coming down from Alaska to go to Fort Meade , Maryland (dad was being stationed at NSA) stopped at Mc Donald's in Regina Canada. They had a hot dog and soup on the menu as well as the original.
At least every other week when my family of 5 had us 3 small kids my dad would get a bucket with sides for dinner on Sun night. Then we got big and a bucket wasn't enough and he stopped. Then the nearby store shut down. Then the quality went. Haven't had KFC in at least 25 years.
They used to have these dessert items called Little Bucket Parfaits in my much younger years. Was devastated when I found out they had been discontinued.
I miss the brown gravy in the little styrofoam cups! The chicken tasted better back in the 70's. Grandma ordered a bucket of Extra Crispy chicken and was told they were out. Told grandma the extra crispy chicken was refried leftover chicken from the day before😂. This was the 70's and grandma always called it "Colonel Sanders ". Never Kentucky Fried Chicken. Thanks for the memories!❤❤❤
Does anyone remember KFC selling BBQ ribs in the early to mid 70's? I was living in Victorville CA. My mother sent me to get a bucket of chicken they also had ribs I added the ribs to my order. As I remember the ribs were pretty tasty, I also met my future wife there that night still with her 44 years later. Thank you.
Yes I do and was just thinking about them, also the gizzards and livers! I lived in Anchorage in the early to mid '70's and they had them there. They also had chicken wings that were so cheap they frequently had specials almost giving them away. That was back when nobody wanted the wings before they became a fad and made them more expensive than the breasts.
I still sing their jingle, 99 center, 99 center, two pieces of chicken, Roll and butter. 😂 Their wedges was the best I'll take those over fries any day!!!
My friend you strike gold again. More great memories, and more than one new thought. I would like to try several of the items we never saw. I haven't been around for some time now but things are improving so I can go back and check up on you and some others , thank you as always... .
My favorite discontinued KFC item was the Honey BBQ Chicken Tender sandwich, it was a sandwich made with 3 Extra Crispy chicken tenders, Swiss cheese and covered in sweet honey BBQ sauce, pickles and mayo on a sesame seed bun! 🤤
KFC is not as delicious as it was 20 years ago. Too bad it used to be delicious ! THE POTATO WEDGES were a favorite of mine. Of course, they're gone too !
I miss those chicken littles, minus the mayo! And, the original popcorn chicken! I never was a huge fan of chicken livers but I remember eating a few of those. Thanks, Rhetty, for yet another great trip down memory lane!
Wow that jogged a memory loose. In the 70s (I was a little kid) we lived in Chicago for a few years and I remember we really liked Kentucky Roast Beef and were all sad when they closed so quickly.
I didn't know that kind of restaurant existed till this video. We need something like that to make a comeback. We have way too many chicken places around. More meat and threes are needed.😊
Back in the day when the Colonel was still around, he personally attended the grand opening of each new restaurant. My mom met him in 1960 when she was young at the grand opening in our home town. Pretty cool story. Eventually a second one opened in town when i was young but the Colonel was no longer around. Unfortunately both locations are gone now. I've noticed that in general around my region that many of the KFCs are gone. Not sure if it's because of their hogh prices, which are really high now for fast food, or due to competition like Popeyes and Chick-fil-A, which seem to be popping up all over now. I am yet to have either but want to yo try both at some point. I was always a big KFC fan, it reminds me of childhood my mom would always take me there when my dad was away for a business trip as a treat and I swear I heard the story about meeting the Colonel a hundred times!
You missed the old KFC classic chicken sandwich. It had a chicken patty with the spices and breading of the regular KFC chicken with lettuce and some mayo as I remember. They replaced it with the Big Crunch Sandwich which had breading that was flakier and crispier than the classic but it lacked the herbs and spices of the original. Now they have the imitation Popeye's chicken sandwich with the pickles.
Thank you for watching and sharing that sandwhich. They have definitely had several different sandwiches over the years. Some of them were good and others needed some tweaking on the ingredients.
You forgot 2 . The honey BBQ chicken that was only available for a limited time in 1992. It was sticky but good. It was original recipe chicken with honey and bbq sauce. Also how can you forget the rotesserie gold chicken, that was a whole chicken in 1993.
They sold the BBQ wings after 1992. At least i know the locations in New Orleans sold the BBQ and the spicy wings in the early 2000's because it's what i use to buy the most. And i honestly have never tasted a better BBQ wing and Spicy wing than the ones they sold. Removing them from their menu was a very foolish executive decision that i'm very sure they're paying for. It seem to be incompetence or subversive sabotage within. In fact Popeye's started selling them both and their workers say they sell fast.
I MISSSSS CHICKEN LITTLES!!!!!!! The snacker is NOT the same and the "new" chicken littlea weren't the same! I want popcorn chicken back, the ORIGINAL CHICKEN LITTLES, I want the potato wedges, and the chocolate parfaits back!
@@RhettyforHistory I also worked for KFC back then. On my lunch break, I'd take two biscuits, open them up on a plate, put a chicken little patty on each biscuit half, then drown it in gravy.. I still say back then, they should've opened earlier and sold chick little biscuit breakfast sandwiches.
My mom absolutely loved their fried gizzards. When she couldn't get those she had me fry up a large batch every so often. But obviously KFC did them better than I could do :)
I used to love KFC gizzards back in the 70s. Their fried chicken is okay because I still buy it. But the flavor is nowhere near as good as it was back in the 1960s.
The Colonel HATED the extra crispy batter introduced after he sold the company. I agree. I miss the old Kentucky Fried Chicken from the early 70s when you could still taste the chicken because it was just seasoned chicken.
Kentucky Fried Chicken in late 1980's had their version of chicken nuggets...I have to admit, they were excellent! All white meat, tender and juicy with original recipe crust...they stopped selling these around 1990-1991 for some reason. I do miss those, better than anybody else's chicken nuggets!
Back in the 80's & early 90's our KFC had chicken nuggets, not at all like the nuggets they recently started selling. Also, onion rings with homemade batter.
Those were big and it seemed like they sold a lot but I guess people grew tired of them or tastes changed? Thank you for watching and bringing that one up.
I grew up in Baltimore. We had a fast food place called Gino's, who competed with McDonalds. They were all over the place and they also served KFC. When they when out of business KFC took over a lot of their locations. I miss the potato wedges and real corn on the cobb. Now they got that canned corn that they heat up and those fries that everybody has and mashed potatoes which suck. We very rarely do KFC anymore. Its just not the same.
in the 70s and into the 80s kfc family meals came with coleslaw and a crunchy vegetable salad as well as a loaf of Grecian bread. the chicken was only cooked when you ordered it, no warming ovens back then. this was in new glasgow, nova scotia, canada. good times.
When I worked at KFC in the 70s, they kept the dinner rolls in a "warming drawer." We would slather a roll with butter & honey, then wrap it in a napkin and put it back in the warmer until our break when we could eat it. Yum!
Awesome video Rhett! One I remember that didn't last too long ,was the stacker I think it was called. Two chicken breasts with cheese and bacon in between them. Take care buddy!!
Way way back in the early 70s when my family started adding this to our occasional Friday night fast food dinners they used to have thick, steak cut crinkle fries that you were supposed to dip in the gravy! Eating this with all of the chicken and you'd feel extra stuffed! Also the biscuits weren't introduced until the early 80s! I remember the singing commercials the Smothers Brothers did for them! But way back they first started offering a roll with honey!
Popcorn chicken is still available in the U.K. but they done away with the BBQ snack wrap, that was my favourite! 2 of those with fries was my go to. 😋
I remember the Corn and Cluck for a buck/under a buck deal. Kentucky Fried Chicken used to sell Hawaiian Bread at some southern California franchises before going to biscuits.
A bit before my time, but I've heard people from the 70s say that KFC had some amazing beer ribs back in the 70s. They were pressure cooked, just like their chicken, and made with an amazing sauce. I have anyways been intrigued by that and want to try it once.
Back in the 90s they had a sandwich called the BBQ Crunch Melt and it was awesome. From what I remember it was a crispy chicken breast smothered in BBQ sauce and had a slice of provolone cheese, and that's it. I was a regular at the KFC by my work and after they took it off the menu the manager continued to make it for me for months whenever I came in.
KFC has gone downhill in our area. One store closed and one became a KFC and Taco Bell combined. The KFC/Taco Bell store treats the KFC portion of the store like a step child. Sometimes they will not have the original style chicken and other times they will not have crispy style chicken. Don’t even think about trying to get the chicken pot pie. LOL
Biggest disappointment with KFC over the years is that the 'mashed' potatoes are cheap instant garbage. The gravy is worse than you get out of a jar at the supermarket. As ubiquitous as these sides are with southern cooking, they should put more effort into making them good.
This was an interesting episode. I had forgotten about most of these menu items. Growing up in the 70s, I do remember the chicken livers and gizzards on the menu. I don't know if my folks ever got them, but I do know both of my parents liked chicken livers and ordered them in other restaurants that may have offered them, not to mention my mom making them for herself and my dad. I think they also ate the gizzards, but I can't remember. It was a generational thing I guess since you don't see them much anymore. I have to admit that I liked the fried pickles and still get them when I can if they are offered at a restaurant. As for the chicken wings, one would have thought KFC would have picked it up and run with it.
Why on earth McDonald's decided to ditch those delicious flaky apple pies for what they sell now is beyond me. There's a hole in the wall burger place we go to that sells those pies still. Yummy!
