In this overlanding road trip to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park video, unique wildlife footage, plus loads of useful tips & information, gained from personal experience, to help plan your trip when visiting the park. The park stretches across 38 000 km2 of the Kalahari Desert and is unique in that it crosses the international border between South Africa and Botswana. Visitors are free to roam within the park, without limits in both countries.
This is wild and untamed Africa, no paved roads, mobile phone or internet reception. It's remote and hard to reach, the Kgalagadi is no Kruger Park. It's truly one of Africa's last great wilderness areas, and for those who make the effort to go there, it's SO worth it!
The name Kgalagadi is derived from the San word for "land of great thirst". Water is scarce and only the very toughest survive. It's not a big 5 game reserve, animals that require abundant water like elephants, buffalo, rhino and zebra can't survive in this harsh, dry and unforgiving environment. But massive black manned Kalahari lions, shy leopards and swift cheetahs, the main big cat predators in the park, have a bountiful choice of antelope from which to choose their next potential meal.

Wow, so you literally can't go out the back door without going through immigration. This was a great idea to have a cross frontier park. Great video as always...I like your choice of the accompanying music for this video

Thanks for the comment and kind words. As far as the border setup goes, it's not THAT easy😉 When inside the park you can roam around in either South Africa or Botswana without concern. But if planning to exit into a different country than the one from which you entered the park, you need to go through immigration. The entrance gates into SA, Botswana or Namibia all have customs and immigration desks and passport control. As I said though, if you aren't planning to exit into a different country, you don't need to go through that process. I hope that makes sense.

So different to when I first started going to the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park as a 10 yr old in 1961 (No Nossob then ) as an adult in the 1970's and 80s with my then young family we would go without a booking in PRIME April tourist month and be the ONLY campers there for 3 weeks at a time and proper Bushmen kids for my 2 pre school kids to play with!!! Today you very often cant get a booking >> I have resented the way the Camps like Nossob have been expanded into Hollywood style camps in this water scarce area and the Crowds that go there now that is why the roads are a mess >> As a bachelor the roads were Baby's Bum Smooth and had every sighting to myself > I havent missed a year since 1961 apart from Covid year in 2020 but we are starting up again next year with 3 weeks at Rooiputs >> Its too easy to get to now Tar road from Upington etc NOT a Wilderness anymore >> More like a Dusty Safari Park >> Mapungubwe and Tankwa are the SANParks Wildernees Reserves now I basically Camp at Polentswa and Rooiputs on the Bots side to get a feeling of wht it was back then >. We love the No facilities and NO FENCES on the Bots side, Magic having your dirty Braai Grid Licked Stainles Steel Clean by the Big and hairies at 2am at night Twee Rivieren doesnt have room service like that Lol We are fully equiped with Solar panels and off road trailer to handle the TRUE Kgalagadi Bots side Park and the remote Karoo Farm sites we love to Self isolate on. My Motto is IF I cant stay a night in the Park then I dont go as it is a waste of Pensioners Petrol Money (2 Days Drive from PE ) and you loose perfect PHOTO Light by staying out and wasting Best Golden light trying to get in every morning

Awesome feedback Peter, thanks so much. I hear you, I wasn’t there back then but it must have been a wonderful experience. I think that these areas are becoming even more popular after the shock of our lost, previously taken for granted freedoms last year. We haven’t been to Tankwa or Mapungubwe, but they are on the bucket list for 2021.

how do you find your way around there?
@Kangela
@Kangela 3 года назад
There are only 2 main roads and all the others run between those 2, so you can't really get lost. And if you download Google maps for offline viewing you will be fine.

Kgalagadi - I can't even pronounce it haha
@Kangela
@Kangela 3 года назад
Neither can I, it doesn't exactly "roll" off the tongue 😉 In the San language, the "g" sounds like a "click" sound with the back of the tongue.
