I agree, but I would not give it a religious or 'Dharma' angle. Sikhs used to have so much goodwill in India. They were widely admired as courageous, enterprising, and open of heart. Punjab has gone from being the richest state to something like no. 16 or 19.

The problem with ancient groups (either religious, ethnic or caste based) who specialized in violence & warfare and got a taste of their own kingdoms/sovereignty - is that they often end up as misfits in the modern, civilized, white-collar 9 to 5 job world. Some manage to apply those skills & traditions as soldiers & cops, and some even successfully make the transition to modern professions. But a lot end up left out, aimless, and prone to becoming a criminal nuisance - across parts of India - and in the case of high emigration groups like Sikhs, even in places like Canada, UK, Australia, US etc.

Although this is really painful to watch as a Punjabi, it’s an accurate explanation of the problems that the community faced - drugs; booze and violence. The whole Khalistan craze was a Pakistani ISI inspired plot to destroy the unity of Bharat. Imagine if the Hindus and Sikhs who are culturally closer than any other groups came together, it would make India virtually unbeatable. Sikhs need to move on from the Gandhi era and know that under Modi now we are first foremost Indians and Bharat is our homeland. It’s time for us Sikhs to remember that Hindus and Sikhs are one.

Indian Punjabis are Largely Hindu or Sikh with smaller numbers of Christian’s and Muslims ( Malerkotla ) . Living within Punjab and outside Punjab . Among both Hindus and Sikhs there s a diverse set of sub communities . Though Sikh or Panthic politics is overwhelmingly controlled by Jutts . With a much smaller population in Canada seems Jutts are dominating the Sikh political dispensation there as well including in Gurudwaras .

Maybe it’s a little overblown but domestic violence , patriarchal violence and female infanticide is the highest by a large margin within the Punjab culture. Notice how I didn’t say Punjabi, because the punjabis outside of Punjab don’t share these practices to the same extent.

Well articulated and true information in every sense. RCMP put the statistics in March 2024, in which 84% of crime such as theft, drugs, organized crime, prostitution from South Asian community were done by Punjabi speaking community from India and Pakistan. Data based on religion was not provided but rather based on ethnicity. Finally, India & Pakistan has something in common.

Sometimes I wonder that the Print cherrypick issues and present a side looking at the opportune moment. This is pseudo-journalism that's SGs trademark. Khalistanis are a security risk and post 1984, security agencies helplessly looked on unfolding events as political leadership of the country procrastinated. Post 2014, the scenario has changed in the diplomatic front and wish that Modi government looked at historical records in dealing with present day governments enforcing the need for civilized behavior by its citizens. China should have been better handled and so is Canada. Both should have the same treatment as Pakistan. The government faltered on both counts and hope the corrective measures that are being imposed shall follow.

Sikhs are doing fine. The rural jatt Sikhs do not represent majority of the faith. The false bravado of ruling this part at some time period has instilled perverse pride in section of community. In case BJP wins haryana state assembly election and keeps non jat CM, there will be another violent protest soon. A known BJP hater and former head of amnesty (Aakar Patel) had identified this in reference to Pakistan a decade ago. It is similar caste groups of Pakistani Punjabis which has resulted in violent community. In a decade from now when most of dalit Sikhs have converted to Christianity, and continued migration, jatt Sikhs will loose their political power as well similar to haryana.

Just check the latest stats on jump in asylum applications among students going out of status.
