Vic Firth artist Ian Rosenbaum performs Alejandro Viñao's "Khan Variations" (2001) for solo marimba. For more information, please visit www.vicfirth.co...
The Kahn Variations are a set of 8 rhythmic variations based on a traditional theme from Qawwali music as sang by Ali Kahn. The basic pulse and 'feel' of the music has lingered in my mind ever since I first heard the recording in the early 90's. I developed each of the 8 variations which are played as a continuous piece exploring a different rhythmic and melodic aspect of the original theme. However, from the harmonic point of view the piece is rather static, respecting the lack or harmony in the western sense of the original traditional theme. The buildup in the last 10-15 seconds is rather thrilling, especially as the performer. Beautifully played here.

Isn't that part at 7:23 in the beginning of "estudios de frontera" also by vinao?

Wow, you couldn't find anything bad about his playing so you try to criticize his choice of apparel? Grow up, comments like these help no one.

do you have to use the same mallets that you are using g because I only have the M114's

+Ginni Strehle Hi Ginni, the 114's are a great all-around mallet and would be totally fine for a majority of the piece! However, Ian is also using the M112 and M115 to accentuate the different melodic voices which helps bring the piece to life and not sound flat and monotone throughout. Hope that helps!

Is the low C# cracked? It sounds horribly dead.

I'm sorry, but this piece does NOT appeal to my ears at all. no disrespect to the player. quite honestly, this just sounds like a jumbled up mess. i guess i will never understand this type of music.

+ethanw611 it is very much based on Middle Eastern music which sounds completely foreign to our ears
@zcobryant

That's completely understandable. Viñao's writing is pretty contemporary. If you're more of a fan of tonal music this very well may not appeal to you. It's ok!

+Zack O'Bryant I'm a big fan of non-tonal music, and this does not appeal to me. It's so flat, and lacking in emotion.

The music you are expecting to hear is likely based on the Western tonal system developed by JS Bach. Nothing wrong with that, but there are other parts of the world whose indegenous music does not follow that structure. Nothing wrong with personal preference, but it's just good to be aware of this so that you won't be caught off guard. :-)

I found this music very unappealing when I first listened to it but if you learn some about vinao and his influences you will understand this piece a lot more. I am in love with it now!
