Vijaykamal is a son of rich Thakur Suraj Singh, but has lost his mind. He sees his lover Sapna marry his neighbor Bihari and then commit suicide on the night of the Diwali party hosted by Bihari. This incident puts Vijay in shock. Thakur believes that if Vijay gets married, his mental health would improve. He hence approaches a tawaif, Chand to pretend to be Vijay's wife and thus help him get better. But Chand receives cold treatment from Vijay's mother and his elder brother Kishore. Once, in a fit of madness, Vijay sexually assaults Chand. But later, Chand becomes very friendly with Vijay and that starts improving his condition.
Bihari who wishes to have Chand for himself also tries to persuade Vijay's young sister Radha. He promises Radha to make her an actress in Bollywood and asks her to elope with him with the family's money and gold. But Chand does not let Bihari's plan work. Vijay's younger brother Mohan also falls in love with noble Chand and is heartbroken when he finds out that she is pregnant (owing to the assault) and is carrying Vijay's child. Dejected, he leaves home without notice.
In a fight between Vijay and Bihari, Bihari falls off the terrace and this shocks Vijay, curing him of his mental ailment. But then Vijay is unable to recall Chand. She is then humiliated by the family and is thrown out of the house. Mohan steps in and accuses everyone of treating her like a toy and only using her when needed. He reveals how she saved Radha from Bihari's evil pursuits. It is also revealed that Chand was actually born in a noble family and was only raised as a tawaif as she was found alone after a train accident. The family thus accepts Chand and all ends well.

ये फिल्म बहुत ही शानदार फिल्म है। संजीव कुमार जी और मुमताज जी ने बहुत ही बेमिसाल अभिनय किया है। शत्रुघ्न सिन्हा जी का अभिनय भी लाजवाब है।बाकी कलाकारों रमेश देव, चांद उस्मानी,जगदीप, दुर्गा खोटे और बिपिन गुप्ता की अदाकारी भी अच्छी है।फिल्म के गाने बहुत ही शानदार और सदाबहार हैं। It is a must watch film.

Unhone Unka Kirdar Iss Tarah Se Perfectly Nibhaya Ki Ek Pal Ke Liye Toh Such Me Rula Diya. Jeetendra Ji Ne Aham Bhumika Nibhayi Aur Shatrughan Sinha ji Ne Bhi Apna Role Acche Se Nibhaya. Story Aur Iss Ke Dono Song " Khush Rahe Tu Sada " Aur " Khilona " Dil Ko Chu Gaye.

I was v small child when I went with my parents to watch khilona, I was sleeping fr almost 2 . 5 hrs. But when I grew up n watch movie again then I understood what a master piece movie is everything more than perfect, frm story acting dialogue, excellent music by L P, songs written by bakshi sb n sweetest voice of rafi sb n asha tai. Now never ever even dream that some one will again try to make movie like khilona. Hindi cinema started dying after end of 80s.

Excellent movie and good acting of Sanjeev Kumar and Mumtaj. She is looking very smart and good looking like a young woman and a wonderful woman in the MOVIE. Jittender roll in the movie is very good and impressive to the all family members and gave good lesson to family about the relation between Mumtaj and his sister character and how he can make a great lesson to the sociey. he did get both and didn't accept them because he came to know that the original tamil film hero Late great sivaji ganesan didnt get the award due to anti south feeling in those days which he deserved , that is what is called nepotism and prejudice in the hindi film industry and north india as a whole. And worst part is these songs are some of the best ever made in india and whenever you see not even once did these songs get mentioned in the list of the best songs, music was awesome, lyrics very sensitive and apt and rendition of course out of this world by the great late Mohammed Rafi saab. in case if you do not believe me please do some research and you will agree with what i have mentioned here.

जितेन्द्र उस समय सुपरस्टार थे उनकी फर्ज , जीने की राह जैसी फिल्में ब्लाकबस्टर थी फिर भी इस फिल्म में सैकेंड हीरो का रोल किया और आज के हीरो एक फिल्म चल गयी तो नखरे आसमान पर किसी और हीरो के साथ काम नहीं करते ।
