Only Uttam Kumar was the only bengali actor who received a National Film Award for Best Actor for a Detective role.So in India he is greatest Sleuth actor. Even Soumitra Chatterjee who play twice feluda, he can't receive a single award for this but only once played Byomkesh Bakshi's Role Uttam received it so he was a real Mahanayak.

Only two bengali actors I watched with snake in hand.... Later was rajatava dutta... But the first hero of bengali cinema handled the python with so much ease... Is mahanayak himself.... How much he was dedicated to his work... To make anything look comfortably real.... Great respect and love

মহানায়ক তো মহানায়ক, ওনার কথা বাদ দিয়ে বাকি আর্টিস্ট দের অভিনয় দেখুন, প্রত্যেকটা নিখুঁত এবং অদ্ভুত, যেন মনে হয় সামনে ঘটনা ঘটছে, সত্যজিৎ বাবুর ডাইরেকশন বলেই সম্ভব, নতুন ব্যোমকেশ না বানিয়ে চিড়িয়াখানা ছবিটাকে রঙিন বানালে ভালো হতো।

Shocked to see the 'kiss of death' scene replaced with the very common 'culprit trying to run away' scene. I don't know Bengali, still an ardent admirer of Satyajit Roy and Uttam Kumar but I didn't came here for them infact RU-vid recommended it since I had watched the Doordarshan's Byomkesh serial starring Rajit Kapur, I fear the television show was far better than this. I'd love to watch the movie if I can get English subtitles for it.

This film was the only film where Satyajit Ray worked as a hired director. He had no creative management of this film. This was also made in chaos. You can read about this. It was like Stanley Kubrick's Spartacus.

As per acting Uttom is sarvottam 😘 but Rajit Kapoor as Byomkesh also good specially his feature is pretty close to the description of Byomkesh by writer Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay.

আসল উপন্যাসটা পড়লে এইসব সিনেমা দেখতে আর ইচ্ছে করবে না।গল্পটার বেশিরভাগই change করা হয়েছে। কেন?? ব্যোমকেশের অন্যতম সেরা উপন্যাস হল চিড়িয়াখানা, আসল উপন্যাসটার suspense আর plot সত্যিই অসাধারণ, last এ kissing scene টা এই উপন্যাসের একটা unique ঘটনা। সেগুলো সব change করার কি দরকার ছিল??

I WAS TOO MUCH SHOCKED WHEN I GOT TO KNOW THAT RAY MADE SATYABATI AS THE WIFE OF AJIT. AJIT'S TITLE WAS ALSO CHANGED TO CHAKRABORTY. AND IN SUMMER WHY NISHANATH WORE THREE PEACE SUIT AND MORE OVER AN OVERCOAT? A SPECTACLE COULD NOT IMPROVE BYOMKESH'S CHARISMA AND TALENT.

Here , Satyajit Ray should not be the last word , uni jader jonno cinema ta banachchen tader opinion ta besi important. ar kokhon kotha bolbo , seta apnar permission niye bolbo na , apnar comment apnar barir sinduk e tule rakhun.

What a horrible ending deviating from the original story. No creativity at all. Uttamkumar is looking anybody but Byomkesh. It is evident why Saradindu disliked the film. It is perhaps the worst film directed by Satyajit Ray.

Though Nayok is the greatest creation by Ray, Kumar pair undoubtedly, but Byomkesh by Ray and Uttam is not much less than a great creation and also, I bet Uttam is the best Byomkesh.

Even sharadindu hated uttam Kumar as byomkesh and didn't liked spectacles in his eyes but till now this style is followed in each films. Only Uttam Kumar made it cult.

For once I have to say I could not quite appreciate the "creative liberty" taken by Satyajit Ray with the end of this story - which I feel was way more dramatic in the original version.

Bro the original novel's end was far more advance on that time... BCS saradindu sir finished the climax with a lipp kiss and suicide... But on that time public weren't that much Frank to accept all that... That's why Satyajit Ray sir change the climax... Even u can see the new chiriyakhana movie acted by jishu climax was same as novel but though I think Satyajit sir's climax was better than original.

@@bongosutro7393 True and Satyajit Ray had changed a lot but it followed the language of film not the language of a suspense story.The story was a bit too dramatic for a Ray film so I found his treatment outstanding .The story in itself was outstanding too.Sharadindu didn't like the film because in many cases the author when they see a better version of their story on celluloid they become envious just like it happened with Sunil Ganguly's Aranyer Din Ratri or Bonpalashir Padabali.Ashok Rudra had scathingly criticised Charulata for the change Ray made from the original but it was needed for a film.

I wonder whether Mr. Ray felt the pressure of censor board to not include the climax-full kiss of death scene.

There is no need to wonder because he did not. Mr Ray was not a huge proponent of full blown kisses in his films (save Ghare Baire where it was necessary to establish the relationship). In chiriyakhana he changed the plot slightly and made the husband the guilty party and the wife, the victim, unlike the novel where both parties were guilty hence the kiss to consume poison and escape justice. If you have read pheluda stories, you will realise this is the classic style in which Mr Ray showed how the guilty is recognised and arrested.

In the original stories 2nd and 3rd murders were committed in a clinical fashion where it was difficult to prove them as murders, by nicotine poisoning.

I think Saradindu Bandopadhyay was far more advanced than his age. The climax written by him was more romantic as both Dr Das and Sunayana died due to nicotine posioning while kissing each other. Some minor changes can be noticed here. Even at the time of the first mureder Sunayana helped Dr Das a lot. She played the Sitar when he killed Justice Nishanath. Here the use of tape recorder was shown. Byomkesh was seen to carry a snake in pocket while in reality it seems impossible.
