I got the EV6 8 days ago. In LA it was sticker price and $1,000 over with no dealer ad-ons. The dealers I had called all wanted $10,000 over sticker. I said forget it. The internet page of Downtown Kia had a "Get your price" selection and I filled it in and they responded $3000 over on a Sunday. Then on Monday morning they sent an e-mail "Today only $1,000 over sticker" so I went in expecting to find the deal was full of added charges but nope it was legit. When I saw the paperwork it somehow was actually $820 over sticker with a $750 instant rebate from CA (who knew?), plus the $7,500 tax credit. I didn't know if I was going to love the car but it's actually a really cool car. The radio/climate controls are OK. You can select which one you would like the default to be. I select climate because the radio controls are on the steering wheel. The car is super quiet. The Meridian sound system is the best factory installed system out there. I'm a recording engineer. There is a learning curve with the car but it's fun to drive. There will also be a Genesis version of the same platform coming. I am not a Tesla lover. These cars have a significantly nicer interior, ventilated sets, fantastic audio and no iPad in the center of the car to mess with.

You didn't know if you "were going to love the car"????? I wouldn't buy any car without test driving it first for comfort and convenience. Electric be damned, I won't pay those kind of prices with total confidence I'll really like the car.

@justinramirez8663
@justinramirez8663 2 года назад
Probably a dumb question but does the "tax credit" get instantly applied to the car deal before finalizing terms? So if paperwork is saying 50K .. after the tax credit does it then say 42,500 and that is the amount financed or leased or what ever option you end up choosing to pay for the car I know everyone is different. Thanks.
@ubuu7
@ubuu7 2 года назад
@@justinramirez8663 no, tax credit is when you get your taxes back, and it's limited by taxable income. If you did not pay 7500 dollars in taxes you will only get up to what you paid.

@Silver Lake Larry you mentioned liking the meridian system. I've heard several people trash it for whatever reason, as if the audio was off. One guy said the standard sound mode was bad but surround sound mode was good. Any insight? You are the first person I've seen rave over the meridian sound system.

I’m glad you mentioned the button issue. While driving it’s so much easier to have dedicated buttons which don’t appear/disappear and don’t change their functions. All the new features on cars are distracting enough making them hard to find.

Great review. As a data point, ran into multiple $5,000 mark ups, and one $7K mark up for Kia EV6s in Ohio, one which was not initially disclosed by dealership, sales rep, or sales manager, until I saw it in the paperwork. I didn't purchase. These mark ups are pervasive, and the manufacturers apathetic.
@ivytown508
@ivytown508 2 года назад
How to Avoid Dealer Markups 1. According to CU, you cannot. 2. Get the markup info by phone, email, or text before wasting time traveling to dealer. Get names and titles (Salesperson, Sales Manager, etc.) 3. Go on Google Maps, click on the dealership and write a review stating exactly who you talked to and what the markup was quoted. 4. Go on Yelp! and any other social media you use to do the same. 5. You will get calls from the dealership offering to negotiate the markup.

Many dealerships have been adding on “market adjustment” to MSRP for years. It’s usually the ones that scream and yell at you on a tv ad, telling you what a great deal you’re going to get.

12:42 I disagree, the dual function radio and climate controls are not distracting or problematic. They're a clever way to give people the physical buttons and knobs to control the radio and climate control that they want while also reducing the number of physical controls on the dashboard. How many times are you changing the climate control settings on a drive? You usually set it to auto with a temperature and forget it. Sure you might toggle the front or rear defrost on and off but that's probably the only climate control change you'll make if you're using the automatic setting. On top of that, you have physical radio controls on the steering wheel. 13:33 Really Keith? This is going to sound harsh but you review cars for a living. You have radio volume controls right on the steering wheel in front of you and you had to Google it?! There's also an acronym that applies here. RTFM. The owner's manual was probably in the glove compartment and if the table of contents can't help you find the info then the index in the back of the manual can tell you the exact page where to find the info. Apparently, the skill to use an owner's manual is being lost. I'll expect some "ok boomer" comments except I'm not. I'm gen x.

It’s probably not as confusing as they made it out to be, but I’d still prefer two separate knobs. Combining them seems like a cost cutting measure. Reminds me of the front-to-rear window switch toggle that everyone hated on the ID4.
@SamKhoury
@SamKhoury 2 года назад
@TheEquationSlayer Like I said in my previous response, I think combining them was space saving measure while still giving drivers physical controls of the radio and climate control system. Please take a look at the EV6 dash and tell me where you'd put a second set of controls that won't be even lower down than the combined set.

I get it the concept of the dual controls. I'd rather have separate, physical nobs because I'm one of those people that constantly adjust the temperature in the winter and I like my music. I like to feel the physical feedback because I want to focus on my driving. Yes touch screens offer haptic feedback and sounds but I hate that. Drives me nuts. 2 little physical nobs in the control stack will not disrupt any interior flow. It is most likely a cost cutting strategy. BUT would dual controls be a deal breaker on a purchase? No. It's as significant as an extra blank, fake switch where a trim up would have offered lane departure warning activation/ deactivation.

Just went to a Kia dealer in the Atlanta area and they quoted $12,000 over MSRP (no dealer add-ons-they called it market adjustment) for an EV6. That's way over the whole tax credit. This was for any EV6 they had and they only had Wind and GT-line RWD models. No AWD ones there. They had never seen a GT-line AWD yet.

Another thing about the dealerships - they don't like EVs. First off, their staff isn't trained on them, and second, they know that they won't be getting money from maintenance and repairs like they would on a gas car. I've looked at two EVs at different dealerships, and both times the salesperson was completely clueless about the car, tax incentives, and charging. I asked one guy about the new tax incentives that were, at the time, being discussed in Congress, and he said, "Man, I don't follow that stuff!" It's literally your job to know about that!

Whenever I see CR talk about EV's, there always tends to be an absolutely idiotic comment about something. This week's winner, suppose you buy an EV 350 miles from you house, and the car only has a 330-mile range. Like no one at CR has ever heard the term Supercharger or has no idea that public charging from companies like Electrify America exists. Several months ago, I drove my Tesla Model 3 620 miles in a single day. Charged 3 times, never spent more than 30 minutes at a supercharger. At one stop at a level 3 Supercharger, I went from 43 miles of range to over 300 in 30 minutes, charging at speeds as high as 1,167 MPH.

So CRs best advice is keep your old car running - that the inventory is so bad you are going to pay above MSRP, particularly with EVs. So keep the old clunker if that is what you have if you can. Good to know, thank you CR.

it's all in what you're used to - if you've always had a shifter on the steering column then yes, it's something to get used to and may take a while. I thought I'd really hate the climate controls being capacitive touch buttons on my Santa Cruz but after having the Auto mode set I almost never have to adjust it. I prefer buttons but sometimes it gets to be ridiculous - Porsche for example can have dozens of buttons surrounding the shifter and there's no way you'll be able to find and use those features without looking down - at least until you've owned it for a good bit.

The Mercedes/Tesla column shifter is the best shifter imo. It frees up space and is quick and easy. You don’t have to take you hand off the steering wheel

I purchase 2 year old cars with low mileage over the phone ... Once I select a car and model, I search online for about 10 cars. I then start calling and making firm offers. I never leave for a dealership until I receive a Purchase Agreement Document. This way I avoid any drama at the dealership! I test drive cars before I need to purchase one, watch plenty of online videos and read car reviews on Edmunds & CR. I once bought a car tax free because the new sales associate forgot to include it on the PA and the dealership honored it when I put my foot down. Btw, you can always test drive a car before you picking it up.

Approx 2:30, while Kelly was describing the heads-up features--I thought how helpful it would be to have a navigation system say something like, “The next street is Pine Street; you turn left onto Apple Street in 60 feet.” In other words, identify the street before. Here in the northeast, we have so many streets that are adjacent to each other-and many of them lack corner road signs. Quite often, I find myself turning one street too soon or too late. Apple maps seems to incorporating this approach. On rare occasions, the navigation system has said, “Not this intersection. Turn left at the next traffic light.”

I don't know if there are new vehicles without volume and tuning switches on the steering wheel. If is most intuitive to use those on the steering wheel. And you don't have to take your hands off of the steering wheel. As far as climate control, you will leave at Auto mode with temperature set when you turn the car on. You may make a few adjustment but not tons of adjustments. So all music controls use switches on the steering wheel and leave that screen with climate control on. It seems very easy to me. I am not sure why these guys make a fuss about it.

Iv’e driven the EV6 and planning on purchasing one soon (have a Niro EV right now) and owned a few other EVs and PHEVs (Niro, RAV4, Tesla)…while I’m not a huge fan of the dual purpose dash switching the buttons from HVAC to radio, WHY are drivers using the volume knob on the dash when the one on the steering wheel is absolutely simple and easy to use…the comment about being in a high stress situation and needing to turn the volume down and being confused in absurd! All you do is use your thumb and you can mute the radio, or just toggle up or down to turn it up or down…if you’re in a high stress situation, you shouldn’t be taking your hands off the wheel for starters! Clearly if you’re not used to a car with steering wheel buttons for the radio you will have a learning curve, but it’s an easy one and very helpful. Lastly, you had to research all over the place to find how to find the volume button? The manual is very clear and easy to use…I think people forgot about them in recent years…you can download an electronic version and search them too!! You guys never mention that (which tells me you don’t read them). Before buying any car, I join the forums and download the manual to learn about the car. I don’t buy as many cars as CR, but I’ve purchased/leased about 10 cars in the last 6 years and I’ve done it for each one…you guys are paid to review these cars and should be doing the same instead of throwing out half-baked comments about the vehicles you review…it’s getting annoying.

The one way I’ve heard to avoid DAMU is to go to an area where dealer knows that he would alienate the local population by marking up the price. I read a comment by a guy who stated he went to a small town in Alaska! He could do that because he lived in the Pacific Northwest.

Kelly is a great addition to the panel, especially since USX is so important. BTW MSRP is a marketing device that exploits what cognitive psychologists call the "anchoring effect." Usually, MSRP is above market price (determined by supply and demand). The plan is that customers negotiate down from MSRP and land above the market price. Its a win-win: customers feel that they got a good deal, and dealerships make more money.

supply and demand - people on the demand side either are dumb or just willing to pay the inflated price - before 2021 I was thinking that paying MSRP was a bone headed move but that's where we are at now. I still think you can get a good deal on a car today but you have to work a lot harder and be smarter about how you do it. Simply walking in, test driving a car and going through "the process" would be a losing strategy. Homework, planning and patience will help a lot but scoring 8% under MSRP - those days are gone for now at least for a while yet.

Wind/AWD trim in Pearl White, will be my first EV. Couldn't talk myself into a Tesla given the build quality and reliability issues. Also don't like the exterior design or the total lack of any controls other than that massive center screen. The only time I will step into the show room is to sign paperwork and pick-up car, all negotiation was done base on exactly what I wanted and was willing to pay and mostly by email or text. dealers are on their last leg for profit. More auto companies will move to direct to customer model. Even Ford is doing it.

To avoid dealer markups when buying an EV, just avoid dealers altogether and buy a Tesla.

Because Tesla _never_ raises their prices.... I have a friend who's owned several Teslas he's reserved to the fact that between the time he places an order and the time it arrives the price will go up (usually only by $1000) but still. Many ICE car companies realize the dealership model is way broken but until state laws change or the companies figure a way around it (Ford with "Model-e" is trying to side step dealers) the "Market Adjustments" will likely continue - my suggestion is to buy elsewhere - you may actually have to sign a purchase contract and put down a modest deposit and find a dealer out in the sticks but that should save the surprise when the car is there and they claim they'll just sell it to someone else for the higher price.

@@nickolastiguan Yes, Tesla has raised prices a lot recently. The difference is that everyone knows what they are paying, and everyone pays the same price. Eventually supply will catch up with demand and pricing for EV's will improve.

@@carljaekle as I type this, Tesla had raised the price of the Model 3 here in Canada again, it is now almost $10k CAD more expensive compared to last year @Joe B. You know what you are paying with Tesla sure, but with dealerships, you can shop around, and there are still some that won’t charge you over MSRP. With Tesla, you are at the mercy of one man. So back to my original point, Tesla = corporate gauging, other brands with dealerships = individual gauging; two different situations. The prices of Tesla’s cars won’t come down any time soon, as the cost for raw materials for batteries etc is high due to wars etc. and when the prices of Tesla do come back down - when chip shortage etc ends, so will the dealerships gauging tactics.
