Dr. Sahb explained it brother, he said it is not normal in our society because our religious scholars take everything literally, And it has Ahadeeths because at that time African women used to show religious and other kufria symbols in form of tatoos, If you don't show kufr with your tatoo then it is completely ok. Hope I explained it and helped my muslim brother not fall into the hands of clergy, peace;>.

It's still debatable. But you are right. Harmful things should be avoided at all costs. But, haram and halal are different issues. I myself am of the opinion that tatoos shouldn't be made as it's is apart from giving you harm, and bad shape is a useless thing. If we listen to this lecture, here also the seaker says tatoo making can be haram as well on the basis of certain Islamic commandments and injunctions of fiqh.
