I own this car. LOVE IT. I consider it a well kept secret. Awesome pick-up entering the highway. Great highway range about 250, in town range almost 290, in a warm climate. Unheard of at this price point. We picked up our daughter, son in law and grandson at the airport and drove them and their luggage home, a distance of 100+ miles, comfortably. This is an awesome small SUV and a great way to enter the EV world.
Hey Ho! I agree with this Post and its thoughts. I have a 2019 NIRO, an upgrade from my 2021 IONIQ BEV. And in the matter of parts and service KIA is the clear winner, ditto in price
Alas they’re available only in a very limited area. Was looking at buying a Can-Am Spyder RT Limited and wishing they had an EV trike when I ran across Arcimoto. Pretty cool but not the touring trike the Spyder is.
I laughed my ass off with the Arcimoto song, great presentation. I value having the two opinions of Sandy and Cory. This channel is the absolute best on RU-vid. Good luck on your hiring new engineers Sandy and Cory.
This is basically a car for people that want an electric car that handles like an ICE vehicle, but is electric. Someone that does not want a touchscreen to control their car. Lots of people out there where this would be a perfect vehicle for them.
Sandy, I’m almost as old as you are and I find using the backup camera on my Tesla much more accurate and easy than turning my head around. That was not true at first. But after a few months of owning the car it clicked, and now I am much more confident backing up using the camera than I ever was without it.
Owning this car and another car that has a better camera, there is something weird about the display, first it is low resolution, and gets dirty fast, making it hard to see. There's also some weirdness about the lines, they are not accurate, when I think I am 1-2" away from the curb I'm actually 3-4" The distance to the car behind is also deceptive. I don't have this issue with my other car but it also has a newer HD camera, and also has a top down camera from all the camera data joined on one screen, which is fantastic, and all cars should have that.
Yeah…. like there wasn’t an understanding they would review the new model in two month celebrating all the improvements. Let‘s not forget this is a business too. And that’s fine. But we are not dealing with stupid business men here - and that’s fine. Beating the prior release shortly before a new release is a classic apple move and standard sales practice. So - stay smart and don‘t fall into black and white thinking.
The Niro-EV is sort of a transitional EV; basically Hyundai/Kia getting their corporate toes wet in the EV world. They started building the Niro in 2016, sold as a 2017 model. It was hybrid to start with, and then eventually did full EV. To me, it seems like a test of the water before they really wanted to go full/proper, purpose-build EV. I think that's a sort of play-it-safe approach. I can't wait to see what's changed in their proper, purpose-build EV when you guys get a chance to review it!
And yet somehow they built a car that blew everyone else out of the water in terms of efficiency, range, and price at launch. And reviewers across the board LOVED it. The EV6 and Ionic 5 should really be amazing.
From a marketing standpoint this is smart the name they used for there "EV testcar" could be tainted if they messed it up! Now they have tested the market and they branded it with a new name! Super smart move!
@@patreekotime4578 Yeah, I think they made a very wise choice to do it this way to test the waters. Would have been very easy to transition it back to an ICE build if it had flunked, but it's success and positive reviews told them it was the right direction. I think their choice of making it very "familiar" too in terms of how things worked made for an easier transition as well.
The back up camera is just for checking if someone’s like a child or animal is behind you. It’s completely correct to be turning your head around when parking and then using the camera for the last couple of inches to make sure you’re not hitting a bollard or lamp post.
You need a serious ability to see beyond the obvious “this is how it’s done” is adequate anywhere else but these attitudes won’t cut the ice with Cory and Sandy.
I have driven over 32,000 miles in my Kia E-Niro and it’s been a very solid performer. It blends in so well no one notices your driving an EV. It’s like driving a car with Harry Potters invisibility cloak over it! I wonder if lt will be the same driving a Model 3? My delivery date is later this month! Cheers for another great report! Mark’s Arci- Munro tribute song is AWESOME!
I am with Sandy on the backup camera. I have my own theory that, those of us of a certain age who use the head turn and mirrors, have our brains wired to think that when our head is facing forward the image behind us should be a mirrored image and the camera view screws with our heads because it is "backwards".
Sandy: "I still struggle with backup cameras". My 15 year old son who just started driving: "I hate mirrors. I like using the screen and backup camera"
Greetings from Germany, i really like your channel! I ordered a Model Y but i had to change my plans as it was not available when i needed a car. So i bought a e niro. We are a family of 5 and we drove from northern Germany to Italy this summer (2700 km). It all went fine. It is possible to enlarge the trunk for an extra of 100l with a few Tricks. There are also frunks available on the second Market. The e niro is smaller than the Model y but it is able to load 420 kg... the Model y made in China is able to load only 300kg! That is a joke. I really like Tesla and i would like to own one in the future. They have a LOT of pros but also some cons. Thx for your great work!
To Sandys point about the 3 powertrains on one platform, I think they did pretty well with the EV version. It seems to be rather efficient for what it is.
Hi, I don't want to sidetrack this thread, but your ESL RU-vid channel is excellent, very motivating, and student interviews are very funny. (Also I cannot leave coments on your channel because of age content)
Hi! Love your show, thanks! I’ve driven the Kia E-Niro for more then two years, model 2018. I’m very satisfied with the car. The reason I chose the Kia before the Tesla 3 was that Kia could deliver the car almost 6 month earlier. I agree that it’s not the most modern car today but in early 2019 it was not many options. The trunk is not as bad as you say, I can fit a couple golf bags in there. One more thing, Ionic 5 is not a Kia, it’s a Hyundai. The next EV from Kia is the EV6. I’ve ordered one and I will get it in late October. Test drive the EV6 ASAP, I believe you’ll find a real competitor to the model Y there. Best Regards from Sweden.
Liked you wrap up of the Kia, enjoyed the Point Counterpoint between you and Corey and the rendition at the end was icing on the cake.....it's gonna be a good day!
Glad y’all enjoyed the tune! I wrote the chorus first, and when I realized Sandy was the Builder, well... the verses just sort of wrote themselves :-). Hope I managed to get some of the essence of Lean Design inside a few bars. We made a few tweaks after the stakeholder update when we dropped this, so you can see the final standalone cut here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8LW1PAOfEWY.html
I personally like how Tesla has the charge port in the back because I like to back into my parking spaces. It makes it much easier to get out of the parking since you do not have to be looking backwards or at the screen displaying the back image from the camera
Just an FYI, I have taken several trips of 500 to 1000km with 2 passengers in the Niro EV. With one of the rear seats folded down you can fit a ton of luggage in the trunk; not all luggage is 3' tall by 4' wide 😉. Regarding ride comfort, you have to consider that that each person has different preferences with regards to the sportiness, or stiffness, and it is very subjective, just like the looks of a car. You can't say the Model Y is better because it handles more sporty than the Niro EV, that is a personal preference, not an objective fact like the fact that the Niro EV is built with 90's manufacturing techniques. The Niro EV is far from perfect, but at the price point it allows more people to get into a well equipped, quality EV than a Model Y, a Mach-E, a Polestar 2, or many other EVs that are still priced quite high. The Model 3 SR+ is getting there in terms of entry price, and the Model Y SR was a great deal, but a shame that Tesla discontinued it. Hopefully the Kia Niro EV, Soul EV, the Hyundai Kona Electric and Ioniq Electric will drop in price once the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 start shipping here. What the North American market needs for mass EV adoption is better priced EVs, not more 60K luxury EVs... but that's just me 😎. Thanks for all of the tear down and review videos, I really appreciate them and have learned a ton from you.
Niro seems to be a "safe" appliance - not intended for the enthusiast, but does everything "OK" - they've hit their market target, so difficult to criticize
Well it's true it's fine for point a to point b simple driving for a single person who doesn't care much for travel, and not too into cars. A perfect upgrade from a golf cart, not much more cargo space but at least it's enclosed. Kias are a lot better than many other non Teslas since they don't catch fire like bolts and much better than most Volkswagen group ev offerings. Of course Tesla is never considered in the ev classification after it was ruined by legacy with their shoddy nonsense compliance offerings, Tesla remains in the fine car category since it competes with all cars, and ok Chinese EVs since they actually sell well too.
Well, not everyone who buys a car is a "driving enthusiast". In fact I would bet the VAST MAJORITY of people arent. Which I am greatful for, because its those "enthusiasts" out there making the roads dangerous and loud for their own personal kicks. You can be snide about non "enthusiast" drivers all you want, but believe me, most regular people hate the "enthusiasts".
I have an hyundai i20, I like driving, it's not a sports car and for me was the best option for that reason, I have less spireted driving, my i20 has the same power and 0-60 as my old car but I drive slower in corners, is a mor relaxed drive
Forgot to mention that this well built 90s car is ironically one of the most efficient EVs on the market. I think the top 3 are all non EV specific. The Hyundai Ioniq (original), the Hyundai Kona and the Kia e-Niro all multi platform and all out perform other EVs on efficiency. Annoyingly more efficient than their new dedicated EV platform. My Kona averages 1.5M/kWh better than my Ioniq 5 on similar journeys. Long term average on my Kona (3 years old) is 5.1M/kWh whilst my Ioniq 5 (1 month old) is at 3.4M/kWh.
I wish they had tested the actual range. It is much more than EPA range- mine getting 260-280 miles and Edmunds recently found the same. Has more legroom and cargo space than all the EVs in its class, we considered, e.g. Kona, Leaf, Bolt. I paid around $34k after rebate. Just could not justify price of a Mach-e or Tesla, or eTron. Kia gives a 10 year/100k mile battery coverage which sold me. Our other car is BMW X1 for performance fun but this drives well.
The 100k warranty on battery is a minimum federal requirement on all EV vehicles. I agree though, there should have been a technical analysis on how this “good 90s” vehicle is able to achieve close to Tesla range.
Yes, on road trips on country roads (at about 60 mph) I get almost 300 miles in summer, and only in winter during the coldest periods do I sink all the way close to the EPA estimate. Fantastic car!
2years? No, Niros has been out for 5 years. Sandy often overlook the total length to consider how much cargo there is. This car is very short (closer to a Bolt than a Model3)
To me a 90’s car is one with a lower beltline. More recent cars have a higher beltline making it difficult for me to hang my left elbow on the door sill. I prefer the lower beltline.
Too bad I’m on the wrong side of the Atlantic, wouldn’t have thought twice sending in my CV (French secret clearance doesn’t help right? ;-) )… Anyhow, keep the videos coming, I love’em, I’m more into electronics and IT by passion and work, but you're among the few who got me hooked into smart mechanical engineering, so thank you ! And happy Labor Day !
Ca alors, c'est peut-etre temps d'ameliorer vos alentours et demenager envers un emploie outre-mers. Riens ne survient sans mouvements. Allez-y c'est le temps de soumettre votre CV. Sorry Sandy / Corey, this person did say he was from France with a high security clearance .. Which is not easy to get in that Country actually. I hope he is convinced to join your team by sending his CV to your HR dept. Sometimes opportunity knocks and people find courage when they least expect it. Good Luck Julien...
@@spuddy4063 I should… tbh, I grew up in Florida, and have been to SoCal, I love the area, where I have a bunch of friends… It’s something I’ve attempted, and even backed up by a (very big) Cupertino based company, harder than getting my clearance ;-) But never say never… who knows what the future it up to ;-) Thanks ! (( PS: clearances, even the ones I had, are mostly background checks that take a few weeks, unless you have a relative who’s been to some fishy country or some weird activity on a bank account, it’s a piece of cake getting it beyond a form to fill with some odd questions ))
@@jaxxdotorg Great to hear, my state clearance means little now that I am 70 hardly worth the paper that came with it. I was an IT professional with Correction's working for the FEDS. Truthfully this Sandy Munro thing could be a real opportunity. I know that I would love it to death. @@spuddy4063 Thanks for the positivity ! 💚 I’m gonna focus on moving back to the French Riviera for now and close to my best friends, for my personal balance, the past couple of years haven’t been easy :) Take care
It's a very much a case of damming with faint praise, but it truly is. As an EV in 1995, this would have been a game changer. Today? It has some value, and has some appeal to a specific market, those who really don't want to change. As an older guy myself, I feel the pull that facet exerts, I haven't driven a Tesla, bu the idea of using the screen for so much of the driving experience is a little intimidating. But the Niro is too far the other way. Yes, the Tesla yoke looks a bit crazy, but the limitations of the Niro is like wanting to stay with using the reins of horse to steer!
I wish Munro had tested the actual range. It is much more than EPA range- mine getting 260-280 miles and Edmunds recently found the same. That's 4-4.5 miles per kW and THAT is good engineering. Love ours more than we thought we would.
Keep in mind if you take press cars from German manufacturers, they specifically take greater care with tighter tolerances, extra paint with less orange peeling, better dampening, etc. It does not accurately represent a normal mass produced vehicle.
And maybe even with tweaked software to have better acceleration at the expense of higher pollution compared to mass produced vehicle? We know they have the ability to.
Chargeport in the front is the worst. It's prone to icing. And you should always back into a parking spot, much more control and much more easy when driving away later.
Reversing out from a parking spot or from charging is easier as you don't have to think about fitting into the spot, so I disagree. I don't need control reversing out. It's quicker for me.
Why pick one? I feel like you could have two or three locations with a plug around the car. That shouldn‘t add that much coper to the overall weight and would help in many edge-cases. Adding downward tubes into the gas reservoir is harder than adding power plugs, but that shouldn’t limit us.
Why not both? With a chargeport at the back. . . really the back. . . you’d have the possibility of towing a rented power pack for those road trips where range anxiety comes into play. Which would allow for a smaller battery for better economy, room, etc. . .
I bought a new 2019 Kia Niro EV EX Premium with the cold weather package in NOV 2020. I use it mostly to commute to work five days a week 142 miles per day for a total of 710 miles a week. It cost me approximately 60 cents a day in electricity cost to drive 142 miles. I charge up on a level 2 charger at home at night. I'm just an average working man with a long commute and this car is a good fit for me. I don't know what Sandy's talking about not having enough space, I guess if I was a rich old dude with a wooden steamer trunk for a briefcase, I might be trying to stuff that thing into the load floor also, but WTH for. I only commute to work with my lunch bag and a drink. However, if I had to put four other people in the car, they would certainly fit. Sure, If I was used to driving and large SUV or Crew Cab pickup truck, I might think this car didn't have any room also. I once had a coworker tell me that he could never commute to work in electric car because they were too small and couldn’t pull a peanut trailer, meanwhile he's never pulled a peanut trailer to work and our work has nothing to do with peanuts. This makes about as much sense as Sandy's review
One feature I like to see emphasized is future reliability projections. I like the design features o course but as a buyer I want to know if software problem and updates, body future issues like uneven tire wear suspension strength repair etc, and any drive problems that are not apparent in one short test drive. Love your channel.
Watching every video intently but it feels like the quite before the storm. So hyped for the plaid teardown and future cars you may get to review. I think to many interested in tech/engineering and retail-investors looking to understand who truly is doing what, where, how you are as clean, trustworthy and honest as I have ever seen on RU-vid.
if you looking for a car with a big trunk, you just buy a pickup. niro its a just city car. If you buy a fiat panda and then said that its kinda small, well yeah obviously. you want ev-sport car- buy Tesla or Porsche Tycan you want a big truck-buy a truck niro for me is a perfect car, because aI live in european city, easy to drive, easy to park, pretty spacious.
The e-Niro as we call it here in Europe may not break any ground stylistically but it is nothing like a 90s car as Sandy suggests here. There were no cars of that body type back in the 90s as I recall until the Nissan Qashqai came along in 2006 and started the trend toward these mini-SUV, crossovers or whatever you want to call them. I enjoy watching the Munro videos and I know this wasn’t a tear down but he could have mentioned the aluminium bonnet and tailgate, along with the sophisticated (for this price and size of car) multi-link rear suspension. Having owned one since March 2019 we also find it spacious, 451 litres of boot space is not small in Europe and we use it for carrying all kinds of stuff around here in rural France. What I don’t understand is Sandy’s surprise that there is no ‘frunk’, it is a front drive car after all so what did he expect!? The pace of EV development will surely make the e-Niro and other ‘early EVs’ look outdated soon but we love it and it does seem really well built.
I like the small size of the Niro for city driving - 172.5" long v. 187" for the Model Y. Kia is completely redesigning the the Niro for calendar year 2022, but the upcoming Hyundai IONIQ 5 looks ideal for me - slightly bigger, but still sort of compact.
Two people - associates, two totally different takes on a car. There are thousands of reasons why we need a certain vehicle. The more EVs there are, the better our city air quality. Go EVs and vive la difference.
I am 75 and I love this veh,it is affordable #1 .for my wife and I are the only users the space is fine !The range is ok as here in Canada we do not have a recharge network set up as of 2022
Sandy, and the whole team at Munro, another great episode! I appreciate your insights ALWAYS! And yes, fantastic, tear downs should only be BEV’s, the junk hybrid stuff Detroit and Japan want to feed us is yesterday’s news and we no longer care about it (you and your management team are on the right path). And the Arcimoto tribute ate the end was just plain awesome. It just shows how people who embrace the future appreciate you! And a note to Arcimoto, the information you presented via song has made me look into you guys. My wife and I are a two car family with one of the two sitting in the garage and NEVER driven in the past three years but we don’t get rid of it because we think “someday” we will need a second car. I think today I may have found our solution. Thank you Sandy and thank you Arcimoto.
‘Damned with feint praise’. You’re right Sandy, your added value is in the tear downs, not in car reviews. Pity you didn’t have more time with the E Niro to learn why it is constantly in demand and holding strong residual value in Europe. Cory’s assessment is about right except for the third place behind the Mustang. And it clearly is a compromised design (ICE/Hybrid/EV) but it is a five year old design!! You should have driven it in Sport mode to experience the power…. you should have been less cautious with smart cruise control and checked the settings, it will self drive on highways and you’ll not need to touch the foot pedals except in an emergency, you can let go of the steering too until the safety warnings kick in… you should have checked the efficiency vs VW/Ford/Polestar - only Hyundai/Kia can challenge the Tesla consumption stats. Space? You should have removed the false boot floor, lots of extra space and this is mentioned in many online reviews of the car. I have owned and driven the E Niro for a year and this has every driver assistance technology you will find on contemporary pure EV designs eg id.3/4/Enyaq/Mustang/Polestar but it is MORE efficient. And it is typically £10k cheaper with long warranty, 7 years in Europe including the battery. My previous new cars since 2008 were BMW (1 and 3 series), Mercedes (C240 V6) and Ford. The E Niro is equipped well beyond any of those cars. I will agree that I prefer RWD driving, the FWD of the E Niro is a prt of the design compromise which I’m happy to suffer until I upgrade to a pure Korean EV RWD design. I will not consider a Tesla until the Model Y is built in Berlin. I’m sorry but US made FFQ is simply crap. Even the Chinese are building better FFQ Tesla Model 3.
Loved the Arcimoto song. Portland may have its own set of trouble, but I am very happy I moved to a suburb outside of it. Weather is pretty good, and pace is much more laid back than the NYC area. Munro is awesome, can't wait to see the review of the newer Kia stuff.
So if you could buy that 3yr old NiroEV it would probably cost at least a third to half less than list. That would make it an extremely attractive vehicle!
The KIA is a good size car for getting around a European city (like Paris, France) where the streets are narrow and so are the parking spaces. The USA has a lot more space everywhere.
I don't know if You ever watch Will Prowse and his channel "DIY Solar Power Systems" but he gave Sandy a great complement following the "rant" about our government not supporting Tesla and the manufacturing done in the USA.
You should have the level 2 capable charging port in the front of any car, and the lv3 or maybe lv 4 charger in the back for the shortest run of the most tensioned wire. When you have the vehicle in garage you do not have lv 3 charging anyway.
That is my biggest complaint with SAE J1772. They did not restrict the charge port location. So today it's all over the car, front, fender, quarter panel, etc. Thus charging stations require longer cables. You can't design a standard parking stall forcing people to park in various ways, nose in, back in, opposite of traffic flow. Due to the longer cable people don't put the cables away. They are usually left all over the ground. Creating a trip hazard and a liability problem for property owners. Plus making a tempting target for thieves. And the worst is the port on the front fender exposes the connection to damage from passers by. People passing between the parked cars can collide with the cable and break either the cable or the socket. Poorly thought out.
Nice thoughts and all, but have you seen how people drive? It's the same way they leave that cable lying around. They can neither back in or pull in reasonably close, and will need that longer cable, which they will drag around and beat up and would even drive off with if it was possible.
Munro INC has one huge flaw for me, it is 1,500 miles from home. Thank You Sandy for getting out of your comfort zone to try out a YOU TUBE channel. It is the best.
Like you comments on it. Do think you guys all need to live in EU for a year. Than you would really appreciate the space in a Niro. Those American ships are no comparison.
Thank you very much for the analysis. Personally, I think you can see the huge difference between the appreciation of a product in Europe and in the USA. As a general rule in Europe the Yukon is seen as an "exoticism" and yet practical, unpretentious cars like the KIA are highly appreciated. That is why in Europe it has literally sold like hot cakes. And as the owner of one of them, I can only say that I am in love. A Tesla is better, I know, so is the Porche Taycan... the average citizen admires them but does not buy them (generally speaking, logically).
lol I just got an Arcimoto ad like a minute before the Arcimoto song. That was hilarious I hope Arcimoto is filled with good people who listen and empathize. :p
Very interesting how this differs so much from what I think the average European's impression of this is. In Europe, the Niro EV and Hyundai Ioniq Electric (old Ioniq) Hyundai Kona were very well received. They arrived before the Model 3, so from that perspective the choice was between a Nissan Leaf, a Model S (at €100k) or one of these Hyundai/Kia multi-drivetrain options. The Model Y is only just out in Europe - and it's significantly more expensive. Sounds like the Niro pricing in US is very high - I guess it's a tariff/customs thing. Looking now at the Kia EV6 and Ioniq 5, I can see how based on the feedback of looking old, feeling old internally, Kia/Hyundai went more luxury upmarket. Sandy's comparisons are to recent EVs and luxurious US cars (luxurious compared to spartan plastic European interiors) I'm disappointed that EV6 and Ioniq 5 seem to be focused more on interior improvements and not range, weight, drivetrain and cost improvements - but this makes sense. To crack the US market, where you can compete with local manufacturers on price due to tariff/customs, you compete at the higher segments where price less important.
Yeah the difference is weird. My dad just got his 2021 kia e niro and its the best at that price category no doubt. Nothing comes close. Maybe becauze its a deal from kia but a fully specced out e niro was only 390 euro a month (close to a golf in lease price). Meanwhile the tesla model 3 SR with nothing starts at 500 a month and a model y long range starts at 650. This car does the job for what it is and it does it cheaply.
In Stockholm, Sweden, the biggest cab corporation "Taxi Stockholm" went all in on the PHEV and Hybrid version of this car, a couple of years ago. That in itself says a lot about the efficiency and long term viability and total cost of ownership of the Kia hybrid drivetrain. This car rocks in any drivetrain version, for the price in Europe at least.
Regarding the charge location, from a UK perspective, our "Highway code" is very specific in recommending that you should not "reverse into traffic". Logically, that would also apply to a parking area. In that respect, the rear of the vehicle is both logical and safer. There's also the consideration that should you be involved in a minor accident, there's far more likelihood of damage to the charge port at the front of the car which may render the vehicle undrivable.
I loved Mark's song, credit where credit's due, congrats all at Munro & Associates thanks for sharing & I'm already an FUV shareholder & will be holding (not investment advice) - what a fantastic EV community we have (less so here in Australia sadly)
I’ve owned a Model 3 for over 3 years, but I also lease a 2020 Hyundai Ionia. Why? It was only $140/mon (no money out of pocket) with around 180-190 miles of range. It’s perfect even for someone that lives in the country. Like the Kia, I highly doubt the manufacturers are making money from these but they do reach a good price vs performance (aka value) balance from the perspective of a consumer.
WoW nice thank you sandy song on the end :) They realy enjoyed Sandys skills to get there factory going. Keep up the good work HF from the Netherlands and happy Model3 rider and stockholder :)
Well needless to say it is awesome to see the DREAM Team together making a video. People working together these days is a sight for sore eye's it is a treat that you are both together again making history together. Show's like this make for great viewing and gives me a wholesome feeling inside. Male bonding at it's best .. just kidding Sandy but it is nice to see your team pitching in to make a great company .. Wish more people would take their employee's and enable them to participate. Good for you Sandy, hope the world around you surrounds you with the bounty you deserve.
M & A should get their hands on the 2022 KIA EV6 and skip the IONIQ 5. The body style of the EV6 looks awesome to me, especially the grey color, and it would be interesting to know how auto driving works with that model.
