After swapping my passenger and driver door locks, I had an unexpected problem. Since the lock was stuck, it was forever trying to lock the doors. It didn't happen all the time, but I worried it would run my battery down (among other things). I really thought I was just going to have to cut the arm off so that it didn't interact with the door lock, but when I got it out, I figured out how to disassemble it, and got it unstuck. It still feels fragile, so I greased it up and put it back in the passenger door, where it should be seldom used.

I want to give you a BIG shout out and to say thank you. Some DIRT BAG tried to break into my wife's 2019 Sorrento today and they messed up the driver side key cylinder. I was going to have Kia replace it and hopefully rekey it... I know $$$ I ran across your video and I have to say it was very helpful. I tried it and after some metal shaping reworking of the cylinder, I put everything back together. Everything works and it looks better than it did . Thank you again

Thanks! With the help of your video, i fixed the door lock. One of the tumblers was broken. I just removed it and didn't replace it. Works just fine.

What a fantastic video! I have a dear friend with a Soul that someone tried to break into and messed up the cylinder. I will be tackling the job tomorrow. Thanks to your video, I feel somewhat confident that I may be able to repair it for her. New sub here!!! Blessings!

Thanks Mr. Fixit Shed. First, I commend you on having the patience of a Saint, which you need to do this fix. For awhile there I didn’t think I was going to pull this off but then all the parts on the paper towel were gone. The lock is back in my Rio and it works. Minor Detail, I removed all the tumblers and the lock works very smoothly! Who is going to suspect, lol.

Thanks! Congrats on your success. I knew someone that had an old Ford pickup (1979) and you could unlock the door with a dime. Never was a problem.

I remember learning the follies of tumbler disassembly when I worked at Lowes.

Thanks, Doug. I will keep this in mind. If I find they are binding up in the future, I will clean out the grease and use a light oil instead.

Thanks. I had the same issue with the lock stuck at 45 degrees. Disassembling it and reseating it in the proper position solved my issue.

Thank you all the way from Sweden! The door lock is excactly the same in the Kia Sportage and mine was all seized up. This video helped me a lot to rebuild the lock.

I had to do this again two more times. Once on the driver's side again, and once on the passenger. I found it easier to keep the key in during the procedure after removing that bigger top cap, while leaving the thinner, inner cap and flap attached (the one you said NOT to remove).

Thanks for the helpful video. My lock had been tampered with. Took it apart and key still wouldn't turn. Front most wafer was not moving. This caused the key to not turn. Removed wafer and straightened it out and it worked (might try removing it all together if necessary). It's back together and functioning now. Might replace the cap and flap since they were mangled by whoever stuck a screwdriver in it.

Thank you. My kia soul decided to keep the key in the driver door; in the locked position. After getting a locksmith to open the passenger i took the locking mechanism out like you described. Turned out a tumbler spring was bent and wouldn’t sit correctly. I tossed that spring and tumbler. Anything to make it easier to get it stolen is fine by me. I’m sick of all these problems I’ve been having with it.

You put the key into the cylinder before you put it into assembly. But make sure when you take out wafers- you also take out the springs that kept them in place. And never use all purpose grease. Only use thin grease that comes with a new pack of waffers cuz it's too thick and will accumulate dirt and gunk the lock.

Thanks! Great comment. I learned about putting the key in to hold the waffers in place after making the video. Good to know about the grease. the old grease had gotten crusty, so it was hard to tell.

Thanks! Worked on a 2013 rio. Needed to swap the cylinders from driver to passenger, as one was getting sticky and hard to use.

Stuck pins might be indicative of over-greasing, maybe try a grease cleaner or just some WD?

It did have what looked like dried up, crusty grease in there. I sprayed carb cleaner in there and that seemed to clean it out. That's when the pins started falling out. I mentioned this in the first video, but it wound up on the cutting room floor for this one.

Even with a broken key lock the door will still open from the inside, so as long as you can open any door, you should be able to get a broken lock out
