A boxer that just learns to block kicks can win in he is brawler and does not allow the kicker space. Like the hamed barera fight. Hamed needed a lot space for his fancy punches like a kicker needs space. Don't give the kicker room to kick.

It’s always rough to watch someone try to compete at a high level outside of their discipline. Random observation: I just wonder how strange it was for Phillips just to be barefooted? I would think that for someone with a strict boxing background that would be weird enough without getting your legs battered too. That is to say: I wonder what it would look like if say, Pacquiao and Mayweather had just suddenly agreed to fight bare footed? I can only assume it would have been weird in some way

As a boxer who transitioned to Thai boxing I can totally relate. Low kicks are devastating. I trained with pros and was swiped so often, because my stance wasn't good for Thai boxing and I was too slow at checking kicks... The only other real problem for me was the active clinch, but way easier to handle than the low kicks.

In all fairness to Vince, he was 40 when this fight took place and Masato was 24. They also fought at 70KG; 14 lbs heavier than Vince’s ideal boxing weight class. That all being said, he would’ve lost this fight either way. Masato is one of the best to ever do it and Vince looked like he didn’t have a clue on what to do with the low kicks. Love your content Gabe! Appreciate all you do.

Francois Botha v Jerome Le Banner was a fight where Le Banner decided to go mostly toe to toe with Botha and relatively ignore his kicking and that could only end in one way. Fighting a man good enough to have fought Tyson, Holyfield, and Lennox Louis you are never going to win just mainly using your hands.

I agree with Victor. The age, the weight class are important. I think, Vince Philipps used the wrong tactic to fight an kickboxer. You have to close the range very quick so you can avoid the low kicks (3:10-3:16). He fights as he is fighting a boxer. This low kicks are a nightmare. Great job Gabriel. Great channel!

Interesting. I remember the opposite, especially for the lower skill levels. It was often the case that solid boxers would enter kickboxing competitions, corner kickboxers and then outpunch them. It was so prevalent that new rules were introduced, where competitors had to make a certain amount of high kicks per round, because otherwise matches devolved into boxing, which wasn't different enough for promotion to happen. I can't recall the exact details, if someone in the comments knows this, please share the info. I remember Wonderboy mentioning this too in one of his breakdowns of his own kickboxing matches.
@dukey03
@dukey03 Год назад
This was the case when kickboxing was new to North America, but it was usually high level boxers entering a new developing sport for some “easy” money and wins. I don’t know how it would fare now, but yeah it was because kickboxing was so new here in the 70’s and 80’s that the rule had to be implemented.

What you are saying doesn't make sense. A good kickboxer will get at least one kick on the boxer before the range closes. And then the kickboxer can back out. The damage will accumulate. How can they get cornered? And even though the boxer is far more skilled with punches, the kickboxer will have enough skill to focus on punching defense while backing up.

Kickboxing is like a game of Chess where you play the full set, Boxing is like playing Chess with just the pawns and the King, of course one would expect playing the full set to win. K-1 back in the 90's and 2000's did a lot of cool things with their style vs. style matches. They had no problem getting top level practitioners of Karate, Kenpo, Taekwondo, Dutch Kickboxing, Muay Thai, even Sanda to compete. For some reason Boxers seemed to be reluctant, they could only get a few good ones here and there, and in a disappointing way, they always lose. Here's my takeaway on why that happens a lot: 1. Kicks, especially ones aimed at the legs. Not only do they have more power, but they also have longer reach. Not only that, but unlike straights and hooks, they come seemingly from below the floor, making them hard to predict or catch when one hasn't dealt with kicks before. 2. Clinch, when in clinch range, knees (elbows sometimes) are a factor to look for, whereas Boxing only has the hug as the clinch, which is only used to reset the competitors. 3. Three Ranges, Kickboxing (From Muay Thai to Kyokushin to Dutch/Japanese Style, etc.) works in all three ranges, from long range where kicking can happen, to medium range where punches can happen, and close/clinch range where clinch holds and elbows/knees can happen. So that's what makes Kickboxing way more than Boxing with Kicks, it's the sport of striking, and I think it's silly to think that Boxing by itself is the strongest/best striking style there is when there are way better out there.

Yesterday had a sparring session with a friend who does boxing, i do dutch kickboxing and bjj, we did 3 rounds: boxing, mma and kickboxing. I did pretty well in boxing because i am a bit bigger but he was lightning fast and if he had hit harder it wouldn’t have been a good ending. mma went as planned, double leg takedown and submitted him with an arm triangle. Kickboxing was interesting, i could have killed him with low kicks but there was nothing to gain from that, we were just exchanging some punches, till i landed a slow headkick just to try, he didnt even flinch, just took it right on the chin, he was so focused on my hands, this is why kickboxers transition much better into mma i think, because boxers have a lot of bad habits when it comes to headkicks (example: leon edwards vs kamaru usman 2).

I've transitioned from boxing to kickboxing about 5ish years ago and I know one major difference between the two is the distancing and the pace. With boxing, you can stand pretty close to your opponent and still be safe. Also, you can combine offense and defense, switching between them fluidly. With Kickboxing, if you're within kicking range of your opponent, you're vulnerable. Also, you have to decide between attacking and defending. One or the other. Obviously, counter-striking is possible, but that falls under defending. It's really difficult and impractical to stand in the pocket and try to fluidly switch back and forth between offense and defense. A lot of times my sparring partners want to do a boxing round first because they know it will totally scramble my timing and distancing for the kickboxing rounds. I prefer kickboxing first before ending with boxing.

Leg Kicks, and body kicks, and even teeps, are exceptionally hard for people to deal with that are coming from boxing without any real knowledge of kicking or defense against kicking. Once they correct their stance and learn to leg check and learn kick tells, and have kick defense ingrained in them, they can actually use their boxing; but before then they're gonna get destroyed. And kicks open up opportunities to outbox even someone that focuses on boxing. One of my former sparring partners was a boxer originally, and when he joined us is when he first started learning muay thai. He had better boxing than me, but he couldn't really get past my high guard, and my kicks and knees and clinch gave him serious trouble; to the point that I would combo on him with punches in between kicks when things went well. During hands only sparring, which we did and still do sometimes, he would have the advantage, though he could mostly only land ineffectual body shots - but same here. Him because of how close I watch him in combination with my high guard and angling my defense properly, and him because of good head movement when kicks were taken away. He used a philly shell when kicks werent involved.

Boxers may need some time doing Dutch kickboxing before transitioning to avoid this kind of scenario and be better prepared for a non boxer in non boxing rules

Muay Thai is for Muay Thai, BJJ is for BJJ....Even in MMA, you have to learn MMA. Because jiujitsu is not enough, MT is not enough, wrestling is not enough... MMA is its own sport now, we're not in 1995 anymore. Same, Lethwei is great, but put the best lethwei fighter outside of his sport and he'll get destroyed. Specific sports require specific skills.

So you are saying a boxer lost to a kickboxing in a kickboxing match. No surprise there as they are 2 different sports. Foe your next breakdown hiw about an NBA all -star versus a major league baseball player in a game of 1 on 1.

Facts! Also why is this guy ignoring the fact that Vince Phillips was 40 years old and Masoto was 24 years old. This wasn't a high level boxer, it was a C level old washed up boxer fighting one of the best kick boxers of all time in his prime. Vince Phillips in his prime at his best was mediocre, as a 40 year old he was clearly trash, thats why he had to go to kickboxing in the first place 🙄 🤔

Gabriel it's not fair to say that he beat a boxer when he's kicking him. A boxer's punches of predicated on where his feet are and if you have to defend and throw kicks, you're not going to be a good boxer. Boxers don't fight with their feet. If there were no kicks involved then you could literally say he beat him
