We visit Kicking Horse Canyon Phase 4 (which opened to traffic on November 30, 2023), as well as the Kicking Horse Canyon in both directions along Highway 1, the Trans-Canada Highway, in Golden, British Columbia.
From BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (BC MoTI):
People travelling the Trans-Canada Highway through the Kicking Horse Canyon are now using a wider, safer, four-lane divided highway, with the opening of the new westbound lanes through Phase 4 of the project.
The opening of all four lanes on Thursday, Nov. 30, 2023, marks substantial completion of Phase 4 of the Kicking Horse Canyon project. Construction will pause for the winter. When work resumes in spring, the final pieces of the project will be completed, including landscaping, wildlife fence installation, limited final paving and painting of permanent line markings.
Construction in spring may require minor lane closures and delays. Details will be posted on the project website in March 2024.
This section of Highway 1 through the Kicking Horse Canyon has a posted speed limit of 80 km/h until completion in spring 2024. Following completion, it will be posted at 100 km/h. Motorists are reminded to be prepared for winter, drive appropriately for the conditions, and be alert to the presence of wildlife.
More than $600 million is being invested in the project, with the Government of Canada contributing $215.19 million and the B.C. government providing the remaining $385.58 million.
From Calgary Herald:
After three years, major construction on the Trans-Canada Highway near Golden, B.C., is nearing completion.
Work on the 4.8-kilometre-long section of Hwy 1 has caused significant disruptions since 2021 but with much of the difficult work now over, there will be no more major closures, according to the B.C. government.

“The challenge of this work has been substantial,” disrupting traffic for 20 minutes stoppages, overnight closures and even multi-day closures during off-peak seasons, says a statement on a website for the project.

Great video! It took almost 20 years to get 35 km twinned through the Kicking Horse Pass! What is left now is the provincial portions between Chase and Golden BC.

Wow! It really gives a sense of the downhill grade going into Golden…

Simply a masterpiece of engineering and of course some incredible scenic views, especially during winter! Amazing work, loved the cover of 'Everybody Wants to Rule the World' also!

Thanks! I’m very glad to see one of the more dangerous and most difficult sections to widen of Highway 1 in the province to be completed, through some of the most difficult scenery to build a highway through. The fact it’s so easy to drive through in comparison to how the route once was is an accomplishment in itself.

I was excited to see this, thanks for posting. That S-curve along the cliff edge was always the most harrowing part of the drive on the TCH in BC. I'm glad it has finally been modernized and is much safer now. Gosh the Rockies are so much more beautiful in the winter....wasn't there supposed to be a tunnel constructed as part of the widening project???

Thanks! It’s been long awaited for me to see it completed, and it wasn’t too far from Calgary where I made a last-second visit last week, so two birds with one stone. It is the first time I’ve ever visited the Rockies outside of the summer and the scenery doesn’t disappoint, though it does take a moment to anticipate and plan for the variance in conditions. I did think about how it could’ve been possible to tunnel through the section, but I’m pretty happy to see the 100km/h final speed for the highway expected soon, though the steep hills without climbing lanes may become an issue in the coming decades. It’s still a much needed upgrade from the past

@@xlboltI remember MoTI said they considered a tunnel. I can’t remember the exact reason, but it was probably for cost-related reasons. Construction isn’t expected to fully wrap up until Spring 2024, as there are still some finishing touches such as wildlife fencing, permanent lane markings, final paving, etc. So they’ll probably keep the speed limit at 80 km/h, until everything is done.

There’s another Construction up west of Golden BC near the Quartz Creek FSR road they completely blasted the old highway with the one old bridge gone they’re adding four lanes through there and a new bridge there it should be done by this Spring time. I’ve seen a lot of videos on RU-vid about the Kicking Horse Construction updates and projects from the past years that they done it at least they gotten rid of the old dangerous sections of it.

But now what about through Yoho National Park?

I suppose it's one of the safest places to drive along the TCH, and it's also a Nationally owned corridor. Things get complicated there.

That section doesn’t look as difficult to upgrade compared to the canyon itself. Some (short) portions have already been upgraded closer to the Alberta border. I’ll get to the footage later this year.

@@xlbolt I think the next focus in the area should be the urban section in Golden. An interchange at Highway 95 was originally planned but deferred. Adding an interchange there, as well as another one on the west end of Golden (the far west traffic signal would be most sensible, while extending the service roads to Highway 95 and adding one or two pedestrian overpasses in the mid-section as well). Golden could probably go to 80 km/h if completely built out as a freeway, with the tight corners being a limiting factor.

Good luck, with it being twinned because this current federal government has other priorities, resulting in money being poured down the drain!

@@craigceecee8762 A lot of the cars stop for gas and lunch there. The last thing needed there is a fricking freeway. My last time there was on my 120 bicycle end of May 2018, westbound when phase 4 was getting going. I was going car speed downhill, so in the wiggly lane. LOL. I did a 3,900 mile loop by NW Oregon.
