Kicking Off The Great American Wheat Harvest 2021
In this video I am out in the field with Paplow Harvesting as they are kicking off the 2021 wheat harvest near Burkburnett Texas. They are out in the field with their fleet of 8 Case IH 8250 combines with MacDon FD145 draper heads and 3 Case IH 340 AFS Magnum Tractors pulling grain carts. Paplow harvesting is a custom harvester out of Worthington Minnesota that starts wheat harvest in Texas and follows the wheat crop north as it ripens.

I went on harvest in 1971 from Oklahoma all the way to Canada and it was an adventure. Needless to say we didn't have this type equipment we ran Gleaner combines with gas engines there was something broke all the time. I made it home with 12 dollars we did have a time.😂😂🤣🤣😆😆😆🤣

I also made the 1971 wheat harvest, the first of 4 trips that I made. We ran four 1970 "G" Gleaners on diesel. They were good machines and didn't have any major breakdowns that I recall. We finished that season in Great Falls. I didn't bring home a lot of money either, but at 17 years old, it was ao great experience. I made 4 harvest runs but never in consecutive years and with 4 different crews.

I always wanted to be a custom operator. The last combine I operated was a Case 1460, in 1986. I attended college in Fayetteville, AR, an I would see a lot of big fields near Little Rock and on the way to Memphis. Running farm equipment payed my way through college. I only needed an additional 10 years between 20 and 40 to give me more time. Now that I am near retirement this might be my chance! One thing I have noticed, combines have changed a lot in 35 years. And all the combines are good as long as they are running. You never know when a fan belt, alternator, bearing, chain, or rock will stop you. Thanks for another great video.

I like the way you put that, I needed another 10 years between 20 and 40. Personally, I’m retired, I don’t know how long my health will hold but I could use at least another 10 years from now until then.

Great video Mike . The video brings back memories of when I was part of a custom crew . We had a nice field in Oklahoma but it had to be divided into 5 different pieces because of the farmer had to keep how much wheat each owner received.. Thanks for all your work . That is very cool 😎. My family here in Georgia, have been since 1912. We were tobacco, peanut, soybean and corn farmers, well, even wheat and oats. We had three grain combines, a 1977 International 1460, a M2 Gleaner, and a 510 Massy Ferguson. We did a lot of custom harvest back years ago. Each time I watch a video like this, I say, that's still where I belong! We even picked peanuts in the Mississippi Delta for eleven years. I miss it!

I also didn't know that the winter wheat could be used for livestock feed. Thank you again for making, and sharing this video. Simply awesome!!🚜👍👍

I had a chance to join a cutting crew in the summer of 1970 during summer break from high school in Virginia. I read an article in a National Geographic magazine, even called the guy and talked to him and the explained what was needed and the work. All I had to do is get enough money together to get out to Texas and join the crew. Unfortunately I couldn’t get enough money together and my dad wouldn’t loan me the difference I needed. Not getting to experience this adventure is one of the few regrets I have in my life

If you’re thinking of getting a job on a crew do your research. I’M NOT SAYING THIS ABOUT PAPLOW. There’s some guys that will say anything to get you there and once they get you there they don’t do anything they said they would. I did it for 2 seasons and who I went with was a good guy. You talk to other crews and hear horror stories. A lot of guys that go are usually younger or don’t have any savings. Some harvesters will tell you not to bring a vehicle because it’s to hard to move everything. They don’t want you to have a way to leave it’s part of their plan. At first I wouldn’t go without a truck till you see what kind of crew they are. They say they provide 2 meals a day and you get there and they don’t. If you tell them you are low on money they give you some KEEP TRACK TO THE PENNY. Try to find a crew that stays in a motel!! You can imagine what a camper with 8 guys living in it is like. A lot of them do the trick of always owing you money to keep you there. Get all your money owed to you on the day you agreed to. Don’t wait a whole month to get paid get it every to weeks and if they will do weekly even better. The terrible thing a lot of the time it works if you are low on money and no vehicle you are screwed. They say they hire people from out of the country because they say Americans don’t want to work. That’s a lie also they want them helplessness with no way to leave. Then they can treat you like shirt not pay on pay day. Go with an all American crew if you can. Of course there good crews to who do what they say. Just be careful and do your research!!

At what price point does it become economically unfeasible for the farmer. And for the operators, How many acres do they need to cover to make back costs? Doe they buy new equipment every year? How do they decide between brands? Stuff like that.
