Kid Charlemagne Guitar Solo

I play Kid Charlemagne by Steely Dan with my band The Experts. We have 4 guitar players and the leads are covered so I play the rhythm parts live but I was challenged to learn a solo for one of my classes this semester. I chose this one because it's so much fun and Larry Carlton does such a such nice job of playing over the changes.

I'm a 30 year guitar player, semi pro coz the music scene in Tasmania Australia is quite small! Loved the way that was done, I've seen Maddie Rice play this solo too, but I think you actually do it better in the sense your version, even though your playing a Strat sounds more like Larry Carlton who I assume played it on his ES 335. I play a Les Paul through a Marshall so as I nail the licks I'll have to focus on a tone a bit then to be able to touch what you do, so far you're kickin my ass BUT I"LL GET IT EVENTUALLY, so thanks for a VERY HELPFUL VIDEO! It's a great help!

I really tried to watch your picking hand; but it was a bit elusive. Left hand - spot on and visually follow-able. Thumb pick? How are you holding the pick if not? Pick material? Thickness? Most people playing a Strat in YT videos are using either the neck PU, or some PU combination. You are using the bridge PU and still getting that fluid tone. For that alone you are a stand out, never mind the song choice!!!

well done Juli. Only one note departure from Larry's original recorded version. At 0:36 descending from the C triad pedal off the G, he runs back down from D returning to and referencing that same C maj tonality...DA# CG# CG ECBA#. Check it out, it make sense over the sequence.

The thing that I most hate about the comments below is that Juli played a great version of a favourite guitar part but lots of men felt they could patronise her or comment about her as a woman. When will these people ever grow up? Yes she is a woman, yes she can play electric guitar, she probably drives a car and can buy groceries, Why are you focused by the fact she paints her nails? As far as I can tell the only diffeences between her version and the original Steely Dan version was the type of guitar and the amount of sustain she had, which lead to a brighter note rather than than the fuzzy sounding solo on the original record. But I could be wrong as i heard the original track over 40 years ago on vinyl as a kid buying a record rather than hear the original track as it was played in some studio in New York or LA

Larry Carlton is awesome. This lead is rated #80 on Rolling Stone's top 100. The song is about the rise and fall of King of Acid Owsley Stanley. They actually caught him because his car with all the equipment ran out of gas. Hence the line "Is there gas in the car?"

That was awesome. Great job. Too often these videos of girls playing guitar are of someone half dressed with a boob hanging over the guitar. It takes away from the skill which many have. There’s no need for it. It makes it easier to disregard. It becomes about something else. There are not enough female players out there but it’s getting better. Back in the day it was Ann Wilson or Chrissy Hynde or Joan Jett and a just a handful of others. I can’t believe I’m saying this but thanks for keeping your clothes on and playing the shit out of that solo. Great job! Period. I for one wish their were more woman players.....
