I have no hatred for Discovery or anything, but I get annoyed when they get rid of unique characters. Especially when it's right when they get their own episode. I've never seen Lost but heard they did that constantly. Saru is pretty much the only alien/non-human looking character with any development.
Agreed. I think they failed for keeping Nhan in the background and not allowing her some development. As a Barzan, she was a unique character. Perhaps the only Barzan to serve in the Star Fleet (like Saru was the only Kelpien). Also, the Barzan are an interesting alien race which was not properly explored yet, and Nhan was a perfect chance for this to be done. We already had a fair share of Vulcans and Klingons, but the Barzan remain unexplored. Although she is a background character, she has a fanbase. A small but loyal fanbase. But, even as a background character, she had more dialogue scenes than any other bridge character, except for Saru and Micheal, of course (edit: and the other Captains, too).
And, to be honest, all in all, I like this spin-off, more than i like the older ones, and even more than the original series. All of them are cool, but I think Discovery has a more dramatic narrative. It has its flaws, too.
"Season 4" LMAO. There isn't going to be a season 4 bud. The only reason there's a season 2 let alone 3 is because of NetFlix's contract that they couldn't get out of. STD has no substantive audience because they burnt the longtime Trek fans with this abortion of a ST series.
@@matthewbalsinger3238 ROFL!!! *Now* , with the end of season 3, because the last episode gave an apparent signal that the show may have come to an end, no one needs to be very smart to think that _maybe_ there won't be a season 4... (and not that there _won't_ be a seson 4). But two months ago, when our friend above wrote his comment, nobody in their right mind could say ST:D's wasn't going to have a season 4, and anyone who had predicted this would have taken it out of their ass! Entering its 3rd season *is* a sign of success for a renewed show. Other spin-offs were announced, what indicates that Discovery is successful enough to justify the investiment in the coninuation of the franchise. In general, Discovery is held high in critics, and this is for sure an indicator of success. And its audience hitting 7 million is more than a sign of sucess. And, more than just successful, it looks like Discovery is the world's most popular streaming show: screenrant.com/star-trek-discovery-ratings-most-popular-streaming-show/ Despite the fact that, for many or maybe most of ST:D's audience, things only started to get really going on season 3, this also happened to The Next Generation, which is one of the most beloved of ST series ever, if not the most. Finally, it *does seem* there will be a 4th season: www.cinemablend.com/television/2557031/star-trek-discovery-officially-renewed-for-season-4-and-theres-more-good-news
@@atanvardo5730 STD is no TNG LMAO. TNG was trending UP by season 3, not DOWN like STD. Whare are you even trying to defend this trash anyways? It's not Star Trek, and it's an absolute disgrace to Gene Rodenberry's vision.
@@atanvardo5730 Also: The market when the other Treks existed is COMPLETELY different than the market STD is in. STD must HOLD onto it's limited fan base, it isn't likely to grow because of the requirement to subscribe. Whereas TNG and the other Treks were a syndicated program on freely broadcasted television. TOS gained it's popularity WHEN it was in syndication, and TNG GAINED audience and support when it had begun to flesh itself out in season 3. There is NO mechanism for either to occur for STD. Hell the fact that CBS-ALL ACCESS has already had to resort to rebranding itself as Paramount+ is evidence ALONE that STD and ST:Picard are terrible shows with barely an audience. They were created on artificial numbers made to justify their existence, rather than the numbers generating their existence. STD is no TNG, and it never will be. It is not a beloved franchise (by anyone) and will not be remembered 20-years from now...unlike TNG. Stop defending bad Trek.
@@atanvardo5730 real acting is the best kind of acting. Everyone wants the genuine articles. They prefer not to have fake, cheap, low quality imitation of anything. Real is better than badly faking things.
@@exposingproxystalkingorgan4164 When I said that both were actually crying, I was referring to the characters (replying to our friend above, who said Nhan *sounded like* she was starting to cry when she and Michael hugged each other). But yes, I guess Rachael Ancheril (who played Nhan) and Sonequa Martin-Green cryed for real, alghouth I can't say for sure (they may have used false tears). But even if they didn't, this does not change the fact that Rachael (and Sonequa, also) is such a talented actress... Far too talented for her character to have been kept on the background, it must be said, despite that it may have been not very difficult for them to cry for real, as that was Nhan's goodbye scene (although it remains quite open, for me), and Rachael enjoyed very much playing her. She and the other cast members had a very good time together and they even sang a farewell song to her. I can't remember the song, but it was kind of a pun with Nhan's name.
@@atanvardo5730 yes I agree with you. A good workplace with good colleagues are a treasure. Some workplaces are so toxic and everyone just want to look for an excuse to kill each other. Nobody wants to be in those places.
It's never truly goodbye in Star Trek. I hope to see Nhan again! Because simply put it's BS that she is a main cast member only to be sidelined a few episodes in!
Maybe Commander Nhan returns later. I hope she does so (and soon). Her departure seems quite open to me. Among all background characters so far, Nhan had the greatest potential, in my opinion (and she is such an eye-candy, let it be said...). And I think this, and the fact that Rachael Ancheril, who plays her, is extremely talented, are the reasons why Nhan was given more dialogue scenes than all other bridge characters except for Michael and the Captains (Saru, Georgiou, Lorca and Pike). Ash Tyler and Airiam were also cut-off from the show shortly after they began to have some development. But at least Airiam is back, in a certain way... Sarah Mitch who played her in the 1st season, is now playing Lieutenant Nilsson. In the 2nd season, Airiam was played by Hannah Cheeseman mainly because, according to behind-the-scenes romours, Sarah had adverse reactions to Airiam's make-up.
She's credited as a main actor in the next few episodes, so I imagine Nhan coming back with the Tikhov-M will be some sort of plot point worthy of her having a star billing
The actress is Rachael (Rachel?) Ancheril, Canadian actress. She was on the final season of Killjoys as the warden. Just seems a waste writing her out this way, so I hope she returns in season 4 of Discovery
Considering it's S3 and people who watch an episode don't know the names of your characters...says something about the writing of your godawful show. Classic Trek you can pick up any episode and know who the characters are, their roles, and their personalities. Back in the day this was called WRITING.
@@matthewbalsinger3238 Yeah, as if someone like Checkov or Scotty had any character development... Right... Also, in Discovery there are WAY WAY more characters, all the main few characters are incredibly memorable, about as much as Kirk, Bones, Spock, Picard or Data.
I think that, although Michael was certainly not as close friends with Nhan as she is with Saru or Tilly for example, they are supposed to be friends to some extent; not just colleagues who served on the same ship. Specially because they both were bridge officers and, thus, spent a lot of time together (this is not a determinant, but it surely helps friendship relations to be formed). Also, we cannot expect the series to show us each and every interaction the characters certainly have on their daily lives aboard the Discovery when they are not on their duty shift, and even when they are. These daily interactions are understood, as well as any frienship that may result from them (again, specially when we are speaking of two characters who served on the bridge). Even if we don't take this in consideration, I see no problem with the "goodbye to Nhan" scene, as it would be very well representing how Nhan admired and liked Michael and, even if they were not exactly friends, they would miss each other. What I don't like in ST: Discovery is how they don't allow promising characters to develop and after some time they remove those characters from the show. It happend not only to Nhan, but also to Ash Tyler and Airiam. The case of Nhan is even worse, because the actress who plays her (Rachael Ancheril) is extremely talented. Nhan should not have been kept on the background like she was, and utterly removed. She should have stayed and have been allowed some development.
@@Creasy5678 For sure. Although she had more dialogue scenes than any other bridge character besides Michael and the Captains (Philippa, Lorca, Pike and Saru). A character played by such a talented actress like Rachael should definitely not be relegated to the background. Specially one with the potential of Commander Nhan (not to mention the eye-candy she is). Bad mistake...
Leaving friends and colleagues behind is sad. As actors, when your character leaves a show, that means you have been dismissed from your job. I hope you didn't borrow any debts to buy a house, a car, a boat, a plane, etc. You will still have to make payments.
Actually, Rachael Ancheril, the beauty who played Nhan, was supposed to be in the cast for a shorter time than she ended up staying. She said she is glad that they decided to keep Nhan for longer, because this is a compliment to her.
@@atanvardo5730 yes that is good. One of the Babylon5 SCI fi conventions panels, the actors said they dread having their characters die or get reassigned. That meant bye bye job. They still had to pay for their houses, vehicles bank debts. They said don't be like the dumb celebrities who blow all their money and go bankrupt.
@@exposingproxystalkingorgan4164 Ye! And we hope Rachael is not one of those celebrities you're talking about, who blows up all the money they win and get broken. I know very little about her, but it just feels to me like she is not an inconsequent person.
@@brettwalters-n4u Huhuh, no need for "shhh"... Discovery is a blaster! And to be honest, I'm enjoying it even more than I enjoyed any previous Star Trek series. It has a more dramatic and emotional grisp, the unfolding of the story is more dinamic, there is a thread of the plot which connects all episodes of each season, and each season is an arch connected to the next in the big plot. This is more complex and captures my attention more than the format of the original series which is made up of episodes competely independent of each other. But the previous series are also very good and have their good points, too.
@@atanvardo5730 It's a good series, it's a wee bit jumpy only because unless 'things happen' on a shuttle or on Books Ship etc, it's not covered. The season 3 ep 13 was too rushed, they should have made it 14 or 15 eps, cause ep 13 had too much happening and such a quick resolution. I did some research and the actress for Ossyra, is Janet Kidder niece to Margot Kidder
Rachael Ancheril, who played Nhan, said she was actually supposed to stay for a shorter time than she did, and that she was glad for staying longer because it was a compliment for her work. And I think she is indeed far too talented for her character to have been kept on the background.
@@atanvardo5730 I suspect she will be back for season 4, The Enterprise could certainly plot the trajectory she's on and bring her back if needed. Rachael is an incredible actress
@@steveeverett1736 I have a feeling that this will happen, too. Hope it does. I also would like Ash Tyler to come back. Booker replaced him, but he is not as good as Tyer, although he is not bad at all.
How to kill a red shirt without actually doing it. Nhan wasn't a great character but I kind of like her! She was the Enterprise security chief officer for G** sake!!!!
She's called Nhan, a Barzan. Kili were the people on the starbase requiring medical attention using the seeds onboard the ship that Nhan stayed on as the Barzan were the species that were in charge of the seed vault for that year.
I don't think they should have gotten rid of her. They should have kept her and allowed her some development, instead. She had potential to become a very good character.
