I am sure Killian Jornet can do an even faster 10k. End of August he posted pictures and a description of the workout on his instagram suggesting so. Starting with a vertical K in 29:57, easy down, then 10k flat in 29:42. Insane! 🙌🏼

Great video. I was surprised he raced a 10km after posting an 89km on the track! I can't see how running 89km on the track helps for a pb on a 10km. He is definitely some a special athlete. Sage you should not underestimate your podiums and all the experienced you shared as an elite athlete. I wishes I had the same level as yours and be able to share like you do.

Out of comfort zone: I used to run road races but stopped for several years and just ran for the love of it. But at the age 63 I became inspired to run trail and ultra races--partly because of you, Sage, and some others I'd watched and read about, including, of course, Killian. I trained myself up to trail race and cover the longer distances--which absolutely is a different muscle experience than road racing. Probably one of my better examples of how that has gone is a 4:31 and change for the 25 mile version of American River trail race here in California in 2019 at the age of 66. Unfortunately this pandemic has halted progress, as it has for most all of us. But I'm blessed and fortunate to love this sport and activity of running.

Great video! Late to running. Weight lifted throughout all of twenties, sedentary from 30-38. Been running for two years and planning first ultra this fall. Speaking about getting out of comfort zones, running has been tougher & more rewarding. Mentally hard, physically demanding, and requires planning. Appreciate the informative content.

Interesting discussion! I started running decades ago to stay fit for mountaineering/ski-mountaineering adventures and then it became it's own activity, most summers I run 2-3 50-70K mountain trail runs (not organized races) just for the challenge and enjoyment. When I was in my mid 40s I was putting down some pretty good running volume, 150K weeks consistently, all distances of 12K or more, and not fast, all on trails. Fast forward a bunch of years (Let's just say I'm well on the wrong side of 50) and my volume has decreased to 80-90K weeks (all trail running) and still not fast (5:00/km on flat sections) but age adjusted not terrible. I find that the muscles and skill for technical trails do not translate to fast-flat-road running. I've occasionally run with some fairly speedy roadies on combination routes and they slay me on the pavement and I go blasting past them on the trails.
@jimoconnor8597

No trails around me and no no road marathons coming anytime soon, I signed up for a 50 mile trail run on some fairly technical trails about 3 hours away. Have been up there x2 now to experience the vertical and try to get used to the rocks and roots. After a successful 16.5 and 14.5 miler, I'm not sure I want to BQ now. The 6 hour drive sucks but I'm excited to grind coming up and hope I can make the 12 hour cut-off time!

Loved this video, Sage! I started running back in the 70s. I ran cross country in college and after that did mainly road races for the next few decades. I did 5ks all the way to marathon distance. To get out of my comfort zone, I did my first triathlon (sprint) when I was 42. It was hilarious. I had not been on a bike since I was about 12. I bought a road bike the month before the race and had to learn how to ride and use gears all at the same time. I've done a few more. I also went back to running trail races in my 50s. I actually got to meet you at the Speedgoat in 2015. I did the Vertical "Mile". I think it was about seven miles. I finished! That was quite a challenge considering I had no elevation training and traveled from Texas just two days before. I'm always finding new ways to get out of my comfort zone, even in my 60s. Right now, during this pandemic, I'm doing virtual distance races and strength training. Oh yes, I keep working on balance, too! I enjoy seeing the mountain trails in your videos. Do you think you could do a video about compression socks/calf sleeves? I'm curious if those make any difference, especially for long distances. Thanks so much for your time and effort you put into your videos.

Great video Sage and a good effort by Kilian, a runner I've seen a number of times. I've often wondered how a great flat marathon runner like Kipchoge would perform, at say, Western States or even UTMB. Maybe a better question would be how Kipchoge would perform at Comrades? Would the record fall?
@Vo2maxProductions
@Vo2maxProductions 4 года назад
He'd probably do really well. Western States, Comrades easier to predict and more like a road marathon. Probably CRs and wins, but again I also think a 2:07 marathon runner could beat him there too (if they are a climbing monster). UTMB has a bit more variables though. So its hard to say on a big mountain race with cold temperatures and a lot of gear/powerhiking required.

Hi Sage, even us Non Elite runners can enjoy mixing things up to accomplish running goals at different ends of the spectrum. Last year I did a 50 mile run on my 50th birthday and this year I ran a sub 20 5k. I think having a goal to work for helps a lot. I doesn’t do your running any harm either, a bit of speed work to try and get your 5k PB is a good addition to your training, even if you like building up for a long distance.

Nice video. I admire Kilian for his approach to the sport: he likes to test out things out and does nog say ’no’ from the start. When the ultra world was ’challenged’ by Jim Walmsley on the ’slow’-liness, many thought Jim was a guy with a big mouth. But Kilian took up the challenge and started focussing much more on speed. Pretty sure this 10k is a result of that. Same story for Zinal: I think he mentioned he could improve on uphill speed, and focused on that. It’s what I rally love about him: he considers weaknesses as challenges to improve.

You can train by heart rate or pace. Matt Fitzgerald has a good book "80/20 running", or you can google Furman Institute 5k training plan (FIRST), theirs is baced on pace. All you need is a good best 5k race time and then you can work out your 3 key weekly runs. Runners world published a book based on their research, "Run Less Run Faster: Become a faster, stronger runner with the revolutionary 3-run-a-week training program". They have training programs for 5k, 10k, 1/2, full marathon.

Training was great, the race was great and I have made sure to include some trail work in all my training. I still prefer the shorter distance stuff of half marathons or maybe up to 3 hours on the trail though. I've also gone back to 5Ks a lot as well thanks to our local parkrun.

Very informative video Sage. It is definitely very intersting to see the crossover between road running and trail/mountain running. I think Jim Walmsley performance in the Olympic trials (2h15' on a rather lumpy course) can give us an idea of what a runner like Killian could do in a flat marathon on the road. Personally, I've been trying to run with more vertical gain to get out of my comfort zone- still struggling to find the sweet spot of pacing when it gets very steep.

Hey Sage, I have been wondering about this race and whether or not it was respectable for a guy like Jornet. I am no stranger to his exploits. I certainly follow pro running but have also been interested in technical climbing for most of my life. I've climbed a lot of walls in Yosemite as well as ice and glacier routes in Canada. Being aware of both, Killing caught my eye years ago andI have to say this guy sort of spans a couple worlds. Outside magazine said not too many years ago "It's not even mildly hyperbolic to call him the world's greatest living athlete." All that said, it seemed as though LRC considered this a flop. I wasn't so sure, so I turned to a true expert (you know pro road racing and mountain ultras) to put this in perspective. I enjoyed the analysis and am happy to see that you appreciate the accomplishment as do I.

So, I haven't run a half marathon since 2013 pretty much fresh out of college running track & cross country. I had a decent time (for me) in the half, but not a really great endurance background. I now have a much stronger base, but have been doing 50k-50 mile races over the past handful of years with less focus on speed. A couple of weeks ago something in the back of my head told me I should try the half again and see what I am made of now. I am scared! Trying to decide if I go for a virtual race that has a deadline of December 31st or if I should take more time to train and potentially just create a race of one depending on if there are more virtual races in the new year.

well Joe has beaten Kilian on a climbing race. But it depends on the % grade and if it is technical. For example Joe and I have both run 58-min low at Mt. WA. I'm not sure Kilian can do that, but it is only 12% grade and a road. However, Kilian ran the first climb at Sierre-Zinal much faster than Joe ever has last year (and faster at Pikes Peak also), so its hard to say. as the author of THE OUTDOOR ATHLETE (1985/Johnson Press) et. al, creator/founder of Wholistic Fitness®, and 2x cover athlete of OUTSIDE Magazine? feeble ilg will go on record to say, that, without doubt, Kilian is the most wholistic/versatile mountain athlete ever. how about him dislocating his shoulder at Hardrock 100, and kept racing...and won?! re: comfort zone! ha! that's why i created Wholistic Fitness®! the MOMENT we begin to feel comfortable or successful at a sport or discipline? it's to time find a NEW Dance, baby! specialization is for insect, my first Wholistic Fitness® t-shirt read! when we specialize in something, we tend to get better at it. even successful. with success comes egoic attachment. we don't want to change. for we don't want to look like a nube after we have tasted success. yet? the definition of an athlete is capability across the physiologic spectrum; versatility. so yeah, we Wholistic Fitness® athletes are all-ways changing sports and dancing among the physiologic spectrum. great Vlog again! Dewa is racing MS State XC Championships this Saturday in Denver! come watch! :-) head bowed,

Do you think he could have gone faster with Nike Vaporfly or something carbon plated? Not sure if his new looking Salomon has a plate.
