I’m not from the east coast or NYC and never heard of Kilimanjaro’s . But I used to dance at clubs to house music hard. Even when I went to NYC, I felt I was at home and blended in. Well, I was one of the few Asians dancing that way, but grew up on house music since 85/86 and even used to vogue out here in San Francisco. Watching this and hearing the beats is making want to start dancing! Miss those days of sweating and the baby powder on the dance floor.
Nice to see everyone still after all these years enjoying and sharing the dance contest that especially back in those days over 25 years ago not to many clubs would even allow. I coordinated the events to commence for an entire month with the climatic ending. Many of the dancers have gone on to do some wonderful things and some have gone on to glory leaving us in the flesh. Many blessings peace and love to everyone all around the world. DJ Basil

THIS is how we used to party. Kilimanjaro's (Tracks on Tuesdays), Sound Factory Bar, The Choice..... just a bunch of New York/New Jersey kids gettin' it innnnn! We came to dance, sweat and listen to music that wasn't on the radio or anywhere else. Some of us didn't even know each other's names but we shared the dance floor as ONE. Blessed to have been a part of this unbelievable NYC UNDERGROUND HOUSE DANCE Experience. Yassss!
Thats John Brown, I remember him, he had a brother named Eddie that was a dancer too, they both were incredible to watch, I think they were from the Bronx.
Good memories. I was there that night and many others. Great to see this! Fun memories as I was there at times right on stage with small locks, pointing, clapping, and smiling at various moves from hakim, the japanese kid I gave a pound to, Keith ( R.I.P.) randy, and Barbara, Chris " fragile" sawyer, Robin "boy wonder ", big Lez, , and many more that joined.....and of course john/ejoe. That was a more than one week contest. Fun to watch and help out, as that leap ejoe did in the audience almost broke our arms to catch him. Lolololl.....everybody got down in different ways.
In my book Ejoe won just on just having the guts to jump into the crowd like that lol. Just miss those days. Everyone just dancing and feeling the music. Good vibes
@@thaiboxing67 I agree but that was a VERY "shady" night and CONNNtest.... there's many things I will remain silent on, but some didn't like EJOE's confidence and wanted to what they felt is "humble" him; that's all I'll say.
This is epic I think I might have been 17 or 18 I just came home from College, but I was in the building! I’ve told this story a thousand times about a guy who Jumped of the stage into the crowd…memories
This is inspiration to see the pioneers of the dance movement do it with so much Love and feeling. They are HOUSE MUSIC! The dancers of today, such as myself are humbled and Thank You!
not quite pioneers, more like 3rd gen - they r nice for sure (hell i came up with ejoe) but don't step on the real pioneers and the generation before them (like the host Basil, he can get down too!)...
For me, in this instance, they are. I give respect where it is due. Sweetheart, I don't sleep on them at all. Perhaps, if you were to enlighten, instead of coming off as a bit on your high horse, then perhaps I could gain knowledge. Just a heads up.
Deborah Conton give respect where it's due, exactly, these cats built off cats before them, and those before them... these dancers are not the pioneers, i would call them more the ambassadors, the ones that brought it to the forefront... and i'm cool with several of these cats, so it's not intended as a dis to them, more as support to those who built it and are forgotten or overlooked... they deserve respect too... those that made something from nothing deserve the most respect in my opinion.
they are both pioneers and ambassadors. I have danced in many a circle with them and they are some of the most humble people I have ever met. Those were truly fun times. That clip brought back many memories.
I just realized while rewatching these is that this is the way to do a house dance competition, not the way Just Debut, and House Dance Forever do it... those battles always bothered me and i finally realized what it was, it's the format! House is not a battle dance, in fact battling is contrary to house dance, IMHO it's a showcase dance, if you want to compete it shouldn't be 1 on 1 in house, that's just weird, like how do you dis another person and still keep it house??? It's possible but it's not natural to the style... instead the format shown here is best, each person showcases, they are not "battling" anyone, they are competing against everyone... i would love to see modern house comps take this format... just my 2 cents...
This video is great! I love the energy flowing at this, great work from all involved! I'd be so grateful if someone could ID the tune at 27min! Thanks :)
ha i was about to ask you how you got this footage! I'll chase down Basil's page... i dont know if he has any footage of himself but that brother would get DOWN too.
