Kilin worked at Ko'olau Ukulele for years before starting KI Stringed Instrument Repair in Kailua. He still works closely with Ko'olau/Pono and had this idea for an octave mandolin (tuned double G D A E) with the shape of a very small body guitar or slightly large baritone (21.4" scale). For us uke players it looks like a large baritone 8 string with steel strings. For mandolin players it offers the same chord and scale shapes in a bigger sound and a lower range more friendly to singers. We thought the body shape was more comfortable than octave mandolins on the market and the sound was deeper and richer.
This is just a prototype so stay tuned for more on this unnamed new instrument. Audio is raw and un touched so the levels may be lower than most youtube videos. Listen with quality playback for more accurate listening. Mahalo for checking it out. Let us know what you think.

I play both concert and baritone ukes tuned EADG only whith nylon strings. At the turn of the century many mandolin players took up the new tenor banjo. One of the greatest differences is string tension. The first of the tenor banjos had a 20 inch scale. Most mandolin players used a violin fingering pattern and as it is today did not want to learn a new fingering pattern. I have found that using a viola pattern to be much more comfortable so I have switched I have very large hands.

Sounds fantastic! I like bari ukes -- they are comfy to hold -- and am glad to see an octave in that form factor.

Fantastic sound - what a great idea, at last competition for the larger and much more expensive Fletcher Brocks, Northfields & Old Waves of this world. Kilin - is that a stock set of strings with ball ends - or did you have to make up a custom set for the unusual scale-length/GDAE tuning combination?? I would love to know the gauges and if possible the make please?? Can't wait for this, thanks - Carl

Nice octave mando. Great sound. I used a custom set of strings -- had to go to.052 " for the G strings as lighter were just too lose and floppy. It's an electric octave and different to play than regular mandolin, but getting better at it the more I play. Need more time in the week. Also, my friend, you forgot to mention scale length. Mine is 21"
@robertshorthill4153

Thank you for the info. I like the 21" scale as my hands and fingers are not as long as some pickers. I don't know how Molly and Sierra can do it -- typically ladies have smaller hands. Perserverance, I guess. Thanks

This configuration works far better than a saddle bridge design. Orvil did not understand why the saddle bridge configuration is best used on bowed instruments. You need more power in a plucked instrument where the energy is delivered for a split second and the energy has to be maintained in the instrument. with a bowed instrument the energy is being put to the string constantly so the sound board does not need to hold the energy for long. In fact if the instrument has to much resonance it is bad. That is why you get that little rubber thing in a set of violin strings to keep the E string from whistling. With this configuration you can use lower tension strings with out throwing intonation out the window. A bowed instrument does not have the problems with intonation because it is controlled by the player rather than an unmovable fret.

And a taropatch also has re-entrant ukulele tuning. You could put two sets of baritone strings on it and have a really cool sound.

Stratavarius shure knew what he was doing when he made his one and only mandolin. The practical design parameters of fretted instruments and bowed instruments are vastly different. Instruments with saddle bridges and tail pieces require much higher string tension than instruments where the bridge is attached to the sound board such as lutes and harps. I think Orvil tried to second guess Stratavarius. You can not fool mother nature. this is why the viola de gamba was a failed experement.
