The Bride (Uma Thurman) asks the notorious Hattori Hanzo (Sonny Chiba) to give her a sword to kill Bill.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Perhaps the most highly anticipated film of 2003, Kill Bill Vol. 1 marked the return of renowned filmmaker Quentin Tarantino after a six-year hiatus. Re-teaming the director with Uma Thurman for the first time since 1994's Pulp Fiction, the film was originally the first half of what was to be a three-hour-plus movie before being split into two films. Thurman stars as The Bride, one-fifth of a team of assassins called DiVAS. When The Bride opts to leave the outfit for a life of marital bliss, it doesn't sit well with her boss, Bill (David Carradine), so he has her former cohorts, played by Lucy Liu, Vivica A. Fox, Daryl Hannah, and Michael Madsen, show up at the nuptials, leaving behind a blood bath. Miraculously, The Bride survives a bullet to the head and, four years later, she sets out for revenge against her four assassins and their employer. The story is concluded in Kill Bill Vol. 2, released six months later.

He also misses her smile in reaction to what he's saying. Her mirth nearly belied the truth that she could completely understand everything he said in Japanese. Love that little touch... Ironically his assistant did not miss it which is why he clarified that he wasn't bald. I wonder what HE was thinking when he realized that she understood Japanese since he appeared to take her deception in stride...

lol funny thing is she didn't even use a sword to kill bill. she used the 5 point death strike. the only people that she killed with the sword was the crazy 88 and ren.

In the original script for Kill Bill, she and Bill were supposed to have a big finale sword fight on the beach. (You can hear Bill allude to that at the beginning of the scene, where he says there's a beautiful beach not too far from here that would be perfect for a fight.) Unfortunately, Tarantino was forced to cut the scene because the movie was going long, and so they did the scene in the house instead. I always felt like that final scene between the Bride and Bill was anti-climactic. Two whole movies; scores of dead bodies to get to him; digging herself out of a grave, for Pete's sake; and this is the finale?? It was incredibly anti-climactic, I felt. But then when I read that about what the final scene was SUPPOSED to be, it made sense. And, frankly, I'm disappointed that QT didn't fight more for the scene. But i can't criticize him. He still made a great film.

Regarding the sword being to kill Bill, I don't think that was the case, necessarily. Remember she told Hattori Hanzo, "I have vermin to kill" (vermin, plural). The sword was for her quest for vengeance, in general, to kill those who wronged her, including Bill. How she ended up killing each one is irrelevant. The point was she needed the sword to perform her quest for vengeance. And I don't think she would have been able to do it without the sword.

nrgins just like to point out that she does not use plural, as in japanese there is no plural. if something is plural or not is context based. There is no context here and she only speaks of Bill. 鼠 Nezumi (Rat / Mouse) So its ambiguous.

Tarantino's movies can't be taken like comedies like they're always presented this is a truly profound moment. Right after she says his name, there's a nervous silence in him. He doesn't know why he's sought for, because the works he's done was for death something he swore never to do again. I find that profound.

I love how Beatrix is scared of the reaction of Hattori, after he told him that she wants to meet him. I wonder what she was thinking in that few seconds. Maybe she worried that he don't want to make a sword for her... or she worried if he could attack her... i don't know, but i like this scene very much.

The buffoonery, clowning around and general unruliness from Shiro towards Hanzo the chef makes more sense when we move on to the next scene. This shows the assistant silently and diligently helping Hanzo unveil the newly crafted samurai sword. The contrast is clear, Shiro knows that Hattori Hanzo is a master of sword making, not of sushi.

The interesting part of her needing the sword was that she only actually used it to kill one of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad and that was Oren. Even more interesting, she was also the only one who was part Japanese. Beatrix never bothered to use it on Vernita, she had it when she went after Budd but Elle got rid of him first, on Elle she used Budd's but didn't need to kill her anyway, and she also used it on Bill but used the exploding heart technique anyway.

+Lithrus Quentin once explained that there was a TV show about Hattori Hanzo (Kage No Gundan AKA Shadow Warriors starring Sonny Chiba) during the 80s that he used to watch, and every season would star a new descendant of the last Hattori Hanzo, who would also be played by Sonny Chiba and would also be named Hattori Hanzo. Eventually there were four seasons, four generations, and four Hattori Hanzos. So Quentin likes to think that, in Kill Bill, he is the ~100th or so Hattori Hanzo played by Sonny Chiba.

All the Hattori Hanzo scenes were fantastic. The other two, where he shows her the swords in the attic and when they perform the formal ceremony to give her the new one, every bit as good.
