I purchased this whistle in D, in nickel largely because of this review. You may already know this but Killarney does now engrave their whistles for easier identification.

I really like the Killarney's ability to go from lowest to highest notes and sound like one instrument, with a consistent tone, loudness and tuning. That's becoming a make or break feature for me.

My Killarney Brass D just came in today. The difference between it an my Clark Sweetone is night and day. The Killarney is so much easier to play. My particular Sweetone is very sensitive to breath, I have to hit the sweet spot on everything or the note will break. Which is good for practicing control I suppose. But the Killarney is much more forgiving. I've only been playing for 2 months, so a bit of forgiveness is nice. The tuning of my Sweetone is all over the place, the D and high d are in tune, but everything else is either sharp or flat, and can't quite hold steady. The needle wavers. The Killarney is near perfect, and better yet, the notes hold perfectly. I had put that down to lack of experience. Oh, and it looks like they were listening. Your pet peeve has been taken care of on the new whistles. They have a nice stylized key mark and their name engraved on the mouthpiece. Very understated, doesn't detract from the aesthetic in any way, and observers probably wouldn't be able to see it from a distance. You can see it on the website. Thank you for your review. It really did help.

Hi Stephanie, just wanted to thank you for your review of the Killarney whistles. It was very helpful. I've only started playing the penny whistle a couple months ago; I had purchased a couple cheap ones online, to see if I liked the endeavor enough to stick with it. While I loved playing, I quickly became frustrated by the limitations of the cheaper whistles, not the least of which was that they were not in tune with themselves -- very hard on the ear. So, based on your review, I ordered the Killarney Brass D whistle, and I couldn't be happier. Not only is it beautiful, it plays wonderfully, sounds lovely and I'm not having any problems hitting notes in both the low and high registers. Fingering is also much more straight forward; no alternate fingering needed to play the notes above the high D. As you indicated, the whistle is heavier than the cheaper ones, but I actually find this helpful, because it doesn't jump around in my hands as much as the cheaper ones. I'm enjoying this one so much, I'm sure it's only a matter of time before I order the whistle in other keys. Thanks again for your videos!

Hi Stephanie After watching this review I bought a Killarney Whistle in D. I am in Australia at the moment but the boys at Killarney could not have been more helpful and within a month it arrived. I have been playing it for around 5 months now and I am very pleased with it. The upper octave and most of the third octave are clean and crisp. So thanks for the review. It does get a little wet with condensation so I do clean it after each session and I have made a cleaning rod by cutting up a piece of chamois leather and glueing around a plastic rod off or an old kitten’s toy. I wrapped it around until it just fits inside the bore. It works a treat and fits inside the carry case I bought with the whistle. Also I find one of the little tooth flossing sticks which I am sure you can get over there is great for cleaning the fipple. You know the one I mean, it has a flat plastic handle about 5cms. long with a small rubber what looks like a mlnl Christmas tree about 1cm long attached to one end. If you are interested and do not know what I am talking about let me know and I will send you a photograph. Regards, Terry Russell. (tild22@gmail.com).

Emily Doss Hello, do not worry... Killarney is Good quality whistle. I have quite a collection I tried all Dixon which is also good. It depends how you are going to use it And what for. Killarney is really Good quality But it Should not keep that long to arrive. I bought two Killarney whistles Both in D a nickel And a brass. I use them on stage they are Good whistles And my favourite musician uses them Christy Barry. In Ireland I had a pleasure to play with him. So dont worry But ask about The local post office And The place where you bought them. It Could be frustrating not to receive it. Do not give up Killarney is Good to use But I also love Dixon. These are professional whistles. Generation is the one you Should not buy: it is available everywhere But not for players who want to use it in a band! Good luck

All your vids are great and you always sound fantastic playing all these songs, but THAT whistle is clearly superior. The difference is even noticeable over the video and on computer speakers. With all my whistles they're still just an additional hobby to all my other more professional instruments, but if I decide to spring for that much on a whistle it'll definitely be a Killarney. That's "THE" sound. I like my Clarkes, original w/the wooden fipple, and a sweetone, my Woodi whistles, Oaks, several Generations in different keys, Feadogs, etc., even a cheap low-D, but this Killarney seems to be THE sound that really defines the classic tin whistle timbre, even more than the Dixons. ~JSV

@@andrewwigglesworth3030 I do not think you are necessarily correct. The working mechanism is yes the same, but how the body of the instrument resonates along with the sound changes the characteristics of the tone.

@@andrewwigglesworth3030 Bernoulli effect: "as a fluid moves faster, it produces less pressure, and conversely, slower moving fluids produce greater pressure". Even though air can be considered as fluid, I fail to see how Bernoulli effect is related to playing a whistle. Bernoully effect is about flow of fluids, not resonance. Lets assume you are correct and the material of a body of the whistle plays no role in the sound. Then how would you explain the different tonal characteristics of my Clarke'i penny whistle, silver plated Lir and brass Killarney whistles?

Oh, and I must share with you a whistle I NEED to get. It's a Gene Milligan in full Aluminum, that is with also the mouthpiece in Aluminum too. You can get it with the silent or louder Delrin mouthpieces, but I must try his full Aluminum. I already have his Blackwood with the silent mouthpiece, and for me, it's my favorite wooden whistle, and I have many, like Oz, Boisvert, MacMagnus and more. He just makes unbelievable good whistles. And I'm sure they will be very famous and attractive if he one day should stop making, just saying. His whistles goes all for $185, and that is extremely cheap for the quality. If I could wish for a whistle that you would review, it would be the Gene Milligan full Aluminum in High D. And if you by any chance don't like it, I promise I buy it from you, honestly. 😊🙏💖☀️🌠

I've been playing whistle at trad music sessions for many years, do yourself a favor, save up and get yourself a good quality whistle, it will make a big difference. My favorites are Burke and Sindt... get brass. My mate also has a Killarney whistle, which is nice, too, fun to play and you don't need lots of air flow. It's very similar to the Sindt whistles. although not my personal favorite. The Sindt mouthpiece does have a bit of a problem with clogging up, but is nice for quieter sessions. The Burke session D whistle, in Brass, is my favorite.

I bought my Sindt from the man himself in 2009. Met him at a session and he said he made whistles and I asked him to bring one for me to buy. When I learned the price was $125 I paid him but balked on the inside. $125 for a whistle?? It was only later that I learned how lucky I was to get one at that price!

Interesting they don't mark the the keys. Kind of amazing actually. Is the Killarney name on the whistle anywhere? I suppose it would be cheap enough for them to do key decals, but I think some sort of stamping would be better. Otherwise about the only thing you one can do is mark with a Sharpie or a label maker...but seems kind of chincy to do to a decent quality whistle like that. I only have one Chris Wall whistle and I know he doesn't do that, but considering he's a one-man craft show that might be a different story. Then again, James Becker ( Becker whistles) does mark is whistles and they are dirt cheap for excellent quality. I say if you're in the US or Canada you should check those out. It might defeat the value in savings to have it shipped elsewhere. Anyway thanks for this comprehensive review, you and David Cartmell are the two people I rely on most for my whistle reviews.

You're always best starting out with a D whistle, as it will make following tutorials online much easier (most are in D). But if you'd like an Eb as well, it doesn't need more air than a D (but doesn't sound much different either).

Thank you CutiePie for your very clear answer ! Yes I will also buy a cheaper D whistle for all those great tutorials. And probably go for the Bb later. Best !

@CutiepieTinWhistle 5 лет назад
Chris wall Sweetbrass, it's quiet so my favourite for practice and playing around the house. I don't wear earplugs, no real need with the Sweetbrass, but I'd have to if playing high 2nd or 3rd octave with these whistles! haha!

Thanks v much.... I have another question if u don’t mind!.... I’m quite new to playing tin whistle.... how do u play two of the same note very fast? U hardly blow twice with your breath? Or do u lift some fingers?
@Eric-sy1xu
@Eric-sy1xu 5 лет назад
@@barryjamesreeves You... you blow twice to make the same note. If you want to have a distinct stop between each note you can tap your tongue on the mouth hole when you stop your breath for the second note.

They still look pretty much the same to be honest as I don't play very often, so I haven't really used them. They're a little too loud for practice where I live.

Can all whistles go 3 octave or just this one? Can you demo all whistles that go beyond 2 octaves?

Most whistles only cover two octaves, these whistles also only cover two octaves. You'll only get one or two notes in the third octave.

👏 Hi there CutiePie - Have you given any thought to close ups, details, pros and cons reviews of the 3-octave, fully chromatic slide whistle? There’s nothing quite like the slide whistle when it comes to playing “The Bridge over the River Kwai.” 😉 ♫ BTW: Happy birthday! You don’t look a day over 25. 😊

@CutiepieTinWhistle
@CutiepieTinWhistle 5 лет назад
@@AlvPower it depend what you want to play. Most folk, Irish traditional and Scottish music will be playable on a D whistle. If you intend to play more mainstream or classical music, get a C. I find a useful key, but get a low G, not a high one.

I have a Tony Dixon high D and I think it's quite loud in the second octave. I'm really considering a Killarney whistle even though it's quite loud. Anyone have some recommendations for good sounding whistles which aren't too loud for practice purposes?

Chris Wall Sweetbrass is the PERFECT quiet whistle, but hard to get. You can find him on ebay but I don't think he's taking orders until 2020 now...
