Possum Kingdom is a lake in Texas. There was a missing woman there in the earlier 90’s. People said there was a killer, that sunk her in the lake. It has nothing to do with Vampires, but somehow that got adopted into the song. The forever thing, and all that just had to do with the girl being dead. I would highly recommend the song “Tyler” by The Toadies. It’s also creepy, even more so in my opinion. Their best song is “Away.”

Actually, that isn't what the song is about. The album Rubberneck had a lot of songs that were concepts that intertwined. "I Burn" was about a cult of people who immolated themselves and "Possum Kingdom" was about one of the cult members going to Possum Kingdom Lake as smoke and convincing someone to join them... Vaden Todd Lewis stated this in a doc titled Dark Secrets: The Story of Rubberneck

the verse is in 7/4 for a measure, then two measures of 4/4 (or 1x 8/4, which is a bit awkward to notate - just adding on one extra beat every other measure). The bridge ("Give it up to me...") is in 6/4 for two measures, then two measures of 4/4. The solo/break ("Be my angel...") is a bar of 7/4 then 2 bars of 4/4 again.

I agree with Lex. I always took it as he was a killer. He lured her there and killed her. When he said his dark secret and she will be as beautiful forever, meaning in his mind. I get the vampire references from other posters, but I took it at face value. Dude was a psycho. Even in the vid I think someone was in a body bag.

Possum Kingdom is a lake in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex area. There was an urban myth that vampires lurked around the lake. There is another one that murders happened there as well. It's all not true at all. Not sure what they wrote the song about, but I loved the Toadies! saw em live in Deep Elm in Dallas for free once! Great band.

Yeah... I mean I guess they're both usually seen as ugly... but oppossums are furry, and WAY, WAY bigger. I think a better description would be like a raccoon crossed with a rat. Although oppossums are weird because they're marsupials so they have a pouch and stuff.

Possum Kingdom Lake is a real resort area in Texas. Vaden Todd Lewis, the singer likes to make things creepy. If you liked this you should check out their mega hit Tyler.

Toadies were my 1st concert in 95. I was 15. Amazing band to hear live. I saw them again about 10 years later. I got to meet the band & have stuff signed then I ran into singer at Virgin Records before concert. He was so sweet & took pictures with me. We reminisced about 95 concert @The Edge in Orlando. it;s a spooky song, written for Halloween - there was a local lake near where they lived, where a murder had been committed or a legend about a murder, so they wrote it creepy, from the murderer's point of view -- but count off the beat, notice it's in an odd time signature -- something like 13/12

Brad&Lex, Brad here, I was in high school in the '90's. I'm a southern Texan. The Toadies are northern Texans; we call them Yankees. The Toadies are the best live group I have ever seen/heard. The Toadies are unlike any other band. They stand alone. They are incredible.

The album this comes from, Rubberneck, is KILLER all the way through! Mister Love, Backslider, Quitter, I Come From the Water (my fav), Tyler (super creepy stalker song), Happyface!! Can't believe these guys didn't make it bigger nationwide. Their album Feeler is pretty damn good too, but after that I kinda lost track of them.

Brad, it hurts my soul that you didn't like this song, it is one of my favs from the 90's. I think one of the main reasons I liked it, is that I am a casual guitar player, and this song was so fun to play. And the fact that I saw them live at the New Daisey Theatre in Memphis back then, and it was an awesome show. By the way, j/k about the hurt lol, as we all have different tastes in music :-)

Vaden Todd Lewis is a creepy song writer. They are almost horror stories actually now released in comic books. Best two creepy ones are Tyler and Jig Saw Girl. Possum Kingdom Lake is a lake in Dallas/Fort Worth Texas where they are from.

This is a lot of fun to scream along with in the car by yourself with the volume all the way up. Great song. It just sounds menacing. The vocal effects in the beginning kinda give the creepy vibes away right away. Loving the alternating time signatures as well.
