Killer Caught By His Own Sister | The Case of Thomas Svekla

Welcome, or welcome back, to Twisted Minds, my name is James and today we’re going to be taking an in-depth and personal look at the life and crimes of Thomas Svekla, better known to Canadians as “The Boogieman”. This is a truly disturbing man who preyed upon young women throughout the 80s and 90s. He would spend his free time hunting vulnerable street workers, claiming the lives of countless women, and dumping their bodies near the eastern edges of Alberta.
Thomas has since been locked away, however the story of his life and what led to him becoming one of Canada’s most brutal serial killers of all time continues to rattle around in the hearts and minds of Canadian Law Enforcement as they do their best to prevent these heinous murderers from ever seeing the light of day again.

As a daughter from one of the murder victims, Melissa Munch - I appreciate you taking such a compassionate stance on this towards the victims, but as well as being so informative. Spreading awareness of the lives he’s taken is the greatest thing someone can do ❤️ -I also agree with some of the comments that adding photos of the women at the end is a wonderful tribute :)

Sex work needs to be legalized, regulated, and consigned to licensed brothels where the women can be protected. Laws against sex work are also a waste of tax payer money because they are unenforceable, for instance when the sex worker and her client are husband and wife.
@7eyesopenwide168
@7eyesopenwide168 2 года назад
@@JosephKulik2016 screw that!!! Legalization is just another form of criminalization. Legalization puts the power in the hands of state sanctioned pimps and law enforcement (who coerce and abuse sex workers), it would create a two tier system because many would not want to hand over half of their earnings to a third party. Erotic laborers have been working just fine for centuries. Street based workers are the minority among sex workers. Most street based workers wouldn’t be doing it if they had other options and services. Most of them don’t want to do sex work. These workers are the most vulnerable.

I watch a lot of true crime, and this is the first one that hit very close to home. I was born in Saskatchewan but used to travel to Edmonton as part of my schooling. Being short on money are used to stay at the Trailway motel on Gateway Boulevard until I found out the police had temporary shut it down with a search warrant and were excavating underneath the building for items involved in the murders of prostitutes. Needless to say, I never stayed there again. Out of curiosity, I started following the case but didn’t really hear much until the summer of 2007. I was in candle lake Saskatchewan and through friends met a couple who were both Edmonton police officers. I asked one of them, Rhonda, about the Edmonton serial killer. She said that they I had taken someone into custody that had brought a hockey bag with a body to his family’s property. She said they were still trying to connect him to all the other murders at that time. She did say that there have been no murders since he’s been in jail, but that probably would’ve only been a year as we know the murderer can go dormant for longer than that. This was the first time I’ve heard anyone cover this case, and you did and outstanding job! I had long since forgotten about the story and it’s so good to know that they most likely have the right guy. Thank you also for talking about the victims with such dignity. No one deserves what happened to them. Subscribed! You are in my top 3 next to TC and Coffeehouse Crime.

@@chevgage6210 yeah if I lived in Canada I would want to live in BC not Alberta, unless it was in the Rocky Mountains cuz I ski and snowboard which is like the very far west of Alberta if I’m not mistaken. But the 3 prairie provinces don’t seem any better than living in the prairies in the US. I have a lot of health issues and am disabled and the health system in Canada seems much better than the US. My grandparents on my dads side have home health aides that come like 4x a day to help them bathe, clean, make food, take their medicine, etc. My mom’s parents (well her dad) was shuffled from nursing home to nursing home. My grandma only lived in 1 nursing home but she didn’t live that long after getting into the nursing home. They’ve both passed away now. When I was talking to one of my grandparents in Canada’s nurses, she was in shock they don’t have home health in the US. And I was like “only if you’re rich and can afford it and pay cash.” And her jaw hit the floor. The US health system is atrocious for the poor and middle class.It’s really sad. So many people I know can’t get the treatments they need. And Medicaid and Medicare is barely better than no insurance at all. That being said, maybe I’m mistaken and the Canadian system isn’t much better.

Just curious..is there a reason why we never get told of the details of the victim’s injuries? I feel that is an important part of explaining what happened and yet it’s always skipped over. For example: “The injuries to victims body were incredibly brutal” And then it just goes on like those injuries were nothin major to even mention. I watched channels like Deadbug says and I hadn’t realized how much more heart wrenching when you hear the real details. It just adds a whole nuther layer of depravity.

youtube is pretty strict on what you can say and show and stay monetized so i’d assume it’s for that, true crime in general is tough for youtube cause they don’t want to recommend it to kids even if there is no graphic details or language
@DammnDeejay
@DammnDeejay 2 года назад
@@CountStrapula I would completely agree if I hadn’t been recommended videos by YT where people legitimately *died* and I’m not lyin. I legit watched someone fall to their death and YT listed it as “educational” 🤯 So I’m not asking bc I’m a sick puppy tbh. It’s just..YT is inconsistent with what it wants to show and not show. Which I’m still tryna figure out in particular

James acts like it's so hard to find information on Svekla, but you just have to be willing to go beyond the first few hits on Google (is that expecting too much?). On Press Reader, there's a really long, detailed 2008 article from the Edmonton Journal called "Tom Svekla's Secret Life." It's an interesting report that paints a picture of his origins and provides some clues about his motives.

Why are there never pictures of these women, yes their names but they're still someone's daughter, aunt, mother, grandma. Sad

your story exemplifies the poor police investigation that happens around here. some of these obviously had names attached to some part of the operation. masseuse would have kept who on appointments. a hotel room had to be registered to someone. police service is piss poor, and different police forces not combining efforts at the time. things are a little better. but not by much.

I totally agree. I was watching it thinking "Jesus, these guys were completely inept". 20 years and not one lead? To me, it sounds like they couldn't care less due to them being sex workers. Shameful policing.

It's very different here in Canada in comparison to the U.S. We get very limited coverage of crimes such as these. There are a few exceptions, of course. Everybody knows Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo (Paul Teale), Colonel Russell Williams etc. But, I'd never heard of Thomas Svekla and I live here. We know much more about U.S. Crime because of the coverage by the U.S. press. As, you can see James had trouble finding much news about Svekla, even saying at one point that the police "remained tightlipped" about this case, and that's an understatement, and is true of most Canadian Crime cases.

Constructive criticism here I feel like I don't know anything about this case and I realize that there was a ton of victims but like that other comment said photos of the victims and clues to how the connected the cases or other specific details of the crimes and crime scenes would be really good to help your channel grow I'm just saying from a guy that watches tons of true crime I feel like I didn't gain anything from this I know basically what I did when I read the title good work tho keep on improving and I'm sure you could be one of the great ones

One thing about this whole story that really aggravates me is the fact that aside from the actual perpetrator of the crimes one of the things that inevitably lead to these sorts of deaths is the continued and needless prohibition of this sort of work. Pushing these girls into the underbelly of society through prostitution laws removes from them the ability to really and truly protect themselves. Also don't even get me started on the rampant sex trafficking that exists partly due to the underground nature of sex work.
