With San Fransisco behind me, I start down US Route 1 looking to get back on California's impressive coastal scenery. Next up is Big Sur with legit climbs and drops I will never forget. But not all went so smooth during this next week, three different health challenges hit me at once and tested me plenty. Did I forget to mention my encounter with Sea Elephants?

Hi Diego thanks for another great video. I am aged 72 and was recently diagnosed with having a serious heart condition so you be careful with yours. I only mention it because I will tell you what the cardiologist told me and it was continue to cycle but only at a moderate speed. So please heed his advice. Stay safe out there.
@FlyscoutRyder
@FlyscoutRyder Год назад
This is great advice, thank you. I do try to listen to my body but this time was sort of an exception. I believe it was the bug I had compounded by sitting for four days getting over it and then heavy climbing. In hindsight, I should have stopped for the day right away instead of trying to power thru it. I will be more conscious next times. It will inevitably happen again. For now I keep riding like you. Stay safe and thank you.

Ðon't know anything about a-fib, but that looked liķe a ride stopper for sure! Done with the ride now. R and R in SC with my son. The Oregon Trail, Lewis and Clark, then finish thru the Appalachians to VA. made me realize how tough those people were whoendured that 175 - 220 years ago. I'm tired but didn't suffer 3% of what tĥey went thru. And glad I didn't have to deal with what you did with a-fiɓ. Be healthy, Diego !

Hi Lavon. Good to hear you finished your tour safely. I do the same as you when riding thinking about what efforts it took to move around in the early years of the nation. People like Daniel Boon and the Corp of Discovery were so tough and determined. We are definitely sort in comparison but it's nice to respect their achievements and be aware of them. Stay safe and riding....

Thank you for saying that. A-fib is a scary deal but not too uncommon. Im all good for now but need to be more careful next time it happens and stop for the day if it doesn't go away. Thank you for watching and reaching out.

Thank you for sharing your struggle with A-Fib. I also have A-Fib and my wife and I have been discussing the safety aspects of my planned cross-country ride next year. I have gotten an "Amulet" implant in my Left Atrial Appendage (similar to a "Watchman") to reduce the risk of a stroke. A-Fib increases your risk of stroke 6-fold. Also, I just traded in my iPhone 10 for an iPhone14 which will allow me to summon help via satellite anywhere in the US or Canada even if there is no cell service at all. I will also be meeting with my cardiologist in a couple of days to discuss what medication I could take to slow down the tachycardia if I go into A-Fib like you did. A-Fib is a killer and, untreated, it just gets worse so please take steps to protect yourself.
@FlyscoutRyder
@FlyscoutRyder Год назад
Thank you for sharing this and for advising me to stay on top of my a-fib. My doctor is aware and so far he says it's too early to treat it but I will be on the look out moving forwards. Next time it happens I need to stop and not try do what I did that day which is keep pressing on. I have seen the iPhone 14's ability to call for help via satellite. That would be smart. One thing to add for your piece of mind is that you will be touring in the US. If you happen to get an a-fib episode and need help, you will likely have EMS responders somewhere close by. It is rare to be out of cellular signals. I hope you get to do a tour. I do believe that exercise is a good thing for your heart and body (as long as the doc says it's ok) and cycling is as good as it gets for that. If you need help figuring pout your tour, gear, or what to expect in whichever circumstance, please let me know. Thanks for watching the episode.

That’s such an amazing route and Big Sur is magical. Very cool you went for a second time. I’d be all about that. I love to hear of teenagers doing tours. It seems to me that most drivers think its so slow going but when you are on the bike it sure feels like it’s happening and at just the right speed. Young people, old, and in between are molded with great perspective on life by bike touring. Your son must have life long memories from it. Thank you for watching my channel. More on the way. I did 85 miles that day riding through Big Sur, long climbs were so hard that I can't imagine what you had to go through being still sick. That lady you met has similar story as mine except she's doing ultra long tours I go shorter tours. I started bike touring at 55 and now I'm 59 like her. Glad you got some rest after hard ride to enjoy rest of the Big Sur. This was my favorite episode. Thank you for putting this all together great episode enjoyed every minute of it. 😊

A part of California that I was most hoping to see on our way down the coast. The coast highway was closed because of a big landslide back in 1983. My lady friend and I had to go inland through the Salinas Valley. We did try to see if we could walk our bikes through the slide area but were told that we would wind up in jail if we tried it. We camped one night at Pfeiffer state beach before turning back to the Salinas valley.

Diego! This trip of yours is fantastic! So awesome witnessing this journey, and the footage and drone work is excellent, nice work. NOW, quick story, please bare with me for just a minute. 2 things, I was on the Oregon and N. Cal. coast the same time you were. I was in my car doing a trip from Seattle to see the coast and visit the Redwoods. When I was in Port Orford...around that area...I saw and passed {a few times} a serious looking guy on his loaded bike making definiite tracks. I honked once, and almost rolled down my window to say "way to go!" but didn't. That guy was a lean taller guy, with no flashy colors, but I do remember some red. I didn't forget about him cause there was a "man on a mission" vibe about him, and just last weekend I told my mom about that guy and what I was seeing in terms of cyclists and the #2 thing I'm going to tell you. Anyway my man, I've a strong suspicion it was you, I really do. BUT, don't want to get all woo woo on you, it could very well have been some other random dude. Know what? Probably was. 2nd thing....before I saw this cyclist guy, I was back up the road in N. Florence, Oregon at the Heceta Head Lighthouse beach. While there, taking pictures of the sun and fog, I saw this woman cyclist all loaded up down at the beach. She started back up the hill, and I saw her Canadian flag on it's pole and as she got closer, I could see she was a bit older, not tall, and she stopped and we chatted for a few minutes. She said she was riding down from her hometown of Victoria B.C., was going to So. Cal. and then was riding to Florida. She had a short name, but I had forgotten it. Sooooooo, whatuhya think? I feel very strongly it was Susan! And I feel the guy in Port Orford was you! Lol. Again, IDK, I mean was your Susan heading to Florida? I feel like it was her, and could very well have been you. There was just such a strong feeling about that Cyclist. I also stopped at the Crescent Beach Motel and hiked the Redwoods just south of town. Anyway, That's my story.

Awesome story telling. You gotta do it daily and become a writer. As for the story, you are right, it’s tough to know if it was me. There are so many touring folks doing this route. Driving past one or many daily isn’t too unpredictable. Susan on the other hand did have a Canadian flag so maybe it was her, fits the description. Only thing is that she is from Eastern Canada but maybe her telling you she started in Vancouver might come across as if she is from there. Thanks a bunch for enjoying my content. Im all over recording this coming season 4 and it’s gonna be the best yet.

Thanks for your concern and for enjoying the episode. I'm on the a-fib issue and it will be ok. Yeah, it is so beautiful on that coast. My daughter, Madison, and I have lots of crazy fun and at times extreme activities we do together but cycling has been a huge challenge for her. We have tried since she was four years old (she's 28 now) but the scars don't lie. She has a mental block and even though we try to get over it it hasn't happened yet. I think her watching me doing some of these difficult traffic-y roads doesn't help. She says she cringes when watching me in traffic. We'll see what happens but we actually do plenty crazy things together. She is actually a bad ass just not at cycling, yet🤨 . Thanks for watching.

Diego, I have 3 middle aged sons. The oldest biked with me until he entered the Army. The middle son, lives in Austin, TX. He has begun riding in the last 5 years and when he's here in NE Indiana we ride together. When my wife and I visit TX he secures a bike for me to ride with him. He works for Trek of Bee Cave so he has access to bikes. The youngest son and his family are missionaries in Bucharest, Romania so there's not much chance of riding with him. As a family when the boys were growing we were a cycling family. Our motto was "the family that rides together, stays together". Once again I commend you for your fantastic videos and your amazing cycling skills. Be safe my friend.

And still she can put on her mask, snorkel, and fins and go shoot fish at 50 feet holding her breath. It's a crazy deal I tell you. But Im not giving up or anything. When she comes visit from Sarasota I always offer her to go ride so one of these days she is going to get it, I know it. I agree with you about the traffic. Where is the Co-Motion Pinion bike you had made ?
@FlyscoutRyder
@FlyscoutRyder Год назад
Hi Brian. The Co-Motion is sitting in my shop. I haven't used it since I flew back home mid tour October '22 and swapped it out for my 22 year old Cannondale you see me ridding since the Redwoods episode. I tried it for 1,000 mikes and ended up not liking it. The Pinion shifting is no where near as efficient as integrated shifting with chain and derailleurs, being of Chromoly steel (plus the gear box) made it heavier than I am used to, and it had a serious front end wobble I couldn't correct regardless of what I tried. On this next tour I will be riding a Lynskey Titanium GR300 frame with a carbon fork. They learned about my situation and offered the frame-set for me to build. I built it with GRX drivetrain and all my favorite components and will be starting an east to west crossing of the country in a couple of weeks. It will be season 4 of the channel. Thanks for watching. Be safe out there.

@@FlyscoutRyder I'm very surprised to hear about the Co-Motion Pinion bike as most reports on bike touring websites I read are nearly always very positive about them. I am now 76 and have been bike touring in Europe since my mid forties. My first touring bikes were custom made Roberts with Reynolds steel tubing and Campagnolo group set deraileur gearing .No complaints there but approx 20 years ago I switched to the Rohloff hub gearing and found it a vast improvement on the deraileur system. About five years ago I purchased a German made Tout Terrain tourer with Pinion gearing. I find both systems far superiors for touring to dearileur gearing, virtually maintenance free , no clogged up group set ,and the luxury of an oil free carbon belt drive !! Also with a fully loaded bike the weight difference is ,to say the least, minimal. On my touring 'adventures' I have yet to meet ONE single cyclist who has 'switched' to Rohloff or Pinion gearing who would return to deraileur gearing. Happy Cycling . Brian
