Not bashing this guy but he's a good player nothing special tho..he's got that "Srv ish" type thing going on but he's missing the biggest key! It's in the hands! Check out Tommy Katona he's the closet we get to Stevie in this lifetime! This guy uses heavy strings and all the other Mumbo jumbo that comes along with the perception of Stevie's tone! You can use 9 gauge and get the same tone! I can go a lot more in depth but yea he's good but not the best tone trust that

707king I totally agree!!! There are people who don't even play well at all, or professionally and dare to bash this guy. Well, "This dude" has done his personal, and professional homework, and understands "HIS" guitar, a Stratocaster, and knows exactly what sound he wants and desires out of it, therefore playing the way he plays. Let's face it, the guy is an awesome player. He feels it to the bone!!! And expresses himself with a strat. Also let us face another fact, there are people who are humbucking , Gibson LP lovers, and then there are the single coil, Stratocaster lovers. I respect both worlds, and detest folks who bash, put down Stratocasters, and people who play them just because THEY are not into that "Strat"world. It's a shame really. I knew some musicians in LA, Hollywood who just played The hunmbucking type guitars and when you pulled out a Stratocaster single coil, they would look at you like, "Your going to play that!! ", "it doesn't have enough balls to pull through" Well, I love the sound of a Gibson LP, but Fender Stratocasters do it for me, because I can play rock, pop, Jazz, and much more on my fender Stratocaster. And don't put anybody down for using a different set up!!!!! What is more important is the music you put out with that instrument. THAT'S where the balls come into play...

One of the first things he said... listened to SRV. Paid his respects right there. Good on him, rock on.

@@robertwhitcomb6105 What most folks mean by hard to play or having to fight a strat is because the fretboard radii are so tight as compared to other guitars. 7.25 and 9.5 inch radii and the horrible compound radius Fender used/uses are the typical with a more rare 10 inch and now aways, on a very few special models (Boxer strat), a 12 inch radius. Other brands typically start around 12 inch and go as flat as 16 inch, like Ibanez. The flatter the radius, the easier it is to play. Especially fast. I do love strats. They are all I own but, I do wish they would flatten the necks out quit a bit.

Well, we can do what we want with that, too. I built a Warmoth-based Strat with their Superwide neck and the radius spec of my choice.

I just got a strat yesterday, played it at the store as it was in standard and had .10s on. Got home and couldn't feel it out right, turned to eb, magic!. Strings ever so slightly lighter, tone is fat, amazing how big little change makes.

SRV stepped down & USED 11s gauge strings before he passed.. You don't need 13s to get a SRV sound.

@@jimkostan9932 When you are tuned down a half step 11s feel like 9s. 10s feel really, really light, almost hard not to bend them.

@@GuyNarnarian yes they do, also bend bit better: about 10-15 yrs.ago I used 11s, dropped 1/2 step,for yrs. Only on my Strats,, just like u were saying they feel s bit slinkyer, EXPECIALLY when u got jumbo fret wire, Helps with bigger bends ala SRV .Trower drops a full step down. Higher action.

Wes O'Neill the red Strat is the vintage one from the flood but he put its neck on this one (which is a custom shop) for some time (and I believe he may have retired it now)

I started on a Strat and it's what I play 98.9% of the time. I've never thought it was hard to play. Matter of fact I find it easier to play than all other guitars, except maybe a Tele.

Just ran across your video and I haven't finished watching it but i paused to chime in about what you say about the harmonics seeming richer in E flat. Maybe its the fact that 440hz is higher ,perhaps a half step higher than 432hz. Thoughts? Anyone

I think bad strats feel like you are fighting them. When you find one that feels right it feels good, not like you have to fight it. I dont mind that there are bad and good strats. You just gotta feel them out.

Sam Lee I would guess the neck torqued and bowed...generally that happens before any other part fails, and since everything is adjustable, a quarter turn or two in the right direction on the truss rod will fix it (unless you let it get too warped or it twists). You would also want to check out the spring situation in the rear cavity... with such heavy strings you may want an extra spring or two, or at least a bit of adjustment with a screwdriver to account for the extra tension. It's really more subtle than the commenter said, all strings exert a large amount of tension (more for heavier strings, but it's not crazy) and guitars are designed to take it. But it is certainly wise to do a fresh setup when changing string gauges, or you will find tuning issues plaguing you at the least and at the worst you may irreparably damage your nice guitar...

Seriously damage your guitar? Wtf are you talking about. It’s not so wacky crazy out of this world to use heavy strings on a guitar. You will not cause serious damage whatsoever.

Using heavy gauges, SRV also had a 4th spring on the temolo. A good setup would be needed if switching from light to heavy, or vice versa when you realize you're working harder than you need to.

Mad Minute You HAVE heard the pickup selector wah, you just didn't know it. Hendrix uses it in some parts on Voodoo Chile (beginning of the solo on the long 2nd fret bend).

ozzie houser I agree with u 100%, the funny thing is, when I went to play for my church, I got the same attitude as when I played in the local clubs, I could not believe it, the church is supposed to be a team, one body, build up each other, encourage each other, but again they had two guitar players who gave me their bad attitude.

Bigger strings hold a bit more bass low end so they are indeed a sound changer I don't know to what level to the common ear probably not going to hear much but you can definitely tell a tone difference between 8s and 13 on a strat at least a little come on that's ridiculous why does a bass sound like a guitar or do the strings matter?

@@Stereostupid If you're using lower tunings, a heavier guage string will have more tension to match the same pitch, which is why it's difficult to tune your guitar real low with 8s

A treble retention circuit needs to be VERY carefully calibrated,- the resistor and the capacitor values, to get a setup that suits a player, I put together a little rig where I can test out different values to get it just right, makes a great improvement IMHO.

Get a pickguard without the holes, then you decide where they go.

That's actually a really great suggestion. I was thinking of removing the volume, and going for a dual stacked volume/tone knob, but starting from scratch with a blank pickguard is by far the best idea. Thanks.

If u don't wanna get a new pickguard, you can try to put some sponge under the knob, it will require more strength to move it unintentionally , there are some video about this =)

I have the exact same problem! I like strats but always turn them down, drives me crazy! I can't help it, I just like playing close to the bridge, works better on my LP and tele for what I want I think. Someday I'll learn how to play a strat right! lol 😂

zelon1983 I think it deals with string tension. One of the reasons Les Paul's were so popular is their ease of playability. The strings bend easier for a string tuned to pitch compared to the same gauge of string tuned to pitch on a fender. Since the scale length of the string is slightly longer on a fender, the string has to increase its tension in order to raise its pitch to the same of a Gibson's. Result is more string tension and tougher strings to bend but you can buy custom necks that have a shorter scale to them.

It forces the rest of the band to tune down, unless you relearn the neck. just use thinner strings and tune standard.

Well, you don't really need to relearn the neck, just play one fret up. Many times when I jam with others the band hasn't the slightest clue that I'm tuned a half step down.

I feel exactly the opposite. Maybe your frets were worn out? The jumbo frets feels like speed-bumps when doing slides, to me. Only problem with the vintage gauge is that they wear out quickly. The American Pro Strat has so called narrow-tall frets, which is a great compromise for me.

BigRedRacingteam - it’s crazy because I thought the same thing. I thought for sure that I would like vintage size frets but the meat of my finger kept dragging on the wood of the fretboard and I couldn’t get over it. But those vintage tall frets that they are using now are a great compromise for sure 👍

Haha nice, I have a 2013 MIM with Van Zandt 'rock' pickups. Which model did you put in? Better than the original ceramics for sure, but kinda wish I'd gone with True Vintage instead of Rock, especially after what Dan said about overwound pickups

But everyone critisizes gvf for ripping off led zep... And it's not just the tone, it's the worn out sunburst strat, the huge frets, the massive strings and tuning down a half step. He's not just taking inspiration from srv he's being a copycat. God knows there are too many. As the saying goes Be yourself because every one else is taken up

That is another I thing I don't understand with today's players, they think the blues originated with stevie, when really all he did was play classic blues riffs invented by bb king, buddy guy, jimi hendrix etc. The most unique things about stevie is his fret and string size. Even 'his' signature beat up strat look he stole from rory gallagher!

What about the recent videos that say that thinner strings actually sound better because they give you a better EQ sound (like Billy Gibbons ad these guys are playing .007's and stuff like that). Me I just buy 0.010's in bulk, I'm tired of playing the game. I Iike 10's so I can just put them on any guitar and still tune any guitar any which way, and I not going to pull the strings out of tune. Plus I could't eve play a Floyd Rose at all without 10's.
