5 miles out of San Diego Bay
September 10, 2015
"Todd and I left San Diego Bay at dawn on 9/10/15 to go offshore spearfishing/fishing on Todd's 20' panga. About 5 miles off Point Loma, we saw the animals but couldn't determine exactly what they were until they approached our boat. There was a pod of about 30 of them, young and old, small and large." -Ben

@donnamobilefertilitytracke8850
There is a purpose. Imagine that killer whales have so sublime sonar sense that they can detect they prey from very long distance. Having a group of sea lions they even can select one with broken rib this way. There is no "big blue" there is big underwater 3D map instead ... This time Orcas use wake as smoke screen. This allows them not to be detect by their prey using echolocation as sea lions and grey whales and ambush them. Hunting (for big game) is a game so they hunt and play at the same time. As smart and joyful creatures they stay curious all the time, of course :) BTW They can use a bait as well...
@donnamobilefertilitytracke8850
Many people probably use to think that flying fish fly for fun. Search for and see epic bbc clip and you will see that beauty and awesomeness are where logic and cosequence are. Life in all its variety is a fun of course, the most enjoying and the most serious.

+whitwhit87 Orcas aren't interested in humans. There has never been a reported incident of an orca attacking or killing a human. That's why you'll see some videos of people freeing them from nets or if they've been washed up on a beach and the orca doesn't attack the person because it knows they're trying to help. Orcas are extremely intelligent and they know humans probably don't taste good, there are better options for them.

As a lifeguard, I would've thought you knew to KILL your motor until they moved on. in your video, you incriminate yourself and your coworker when you say, "let's get closer to it." in my opinion, you deserve a fine...and mandatory whale protection education. The only thing I'm thankful for is you didn't appear to harm them during your harassment.

@18merlin14
@18merlin14 8 лет назад
These Orcas were chasing this boat for fun. You can tell by the way these whales were swimming. There were enough shots of the whales swimming upside down chasing this boat. Swimming upside down is playful behavior. If they were hunting or protection mode, they wouldn't swim upside down. This is play for them to chase the waves. But it seems that so many rude, uneducated, disrespectful people posting here are using profanity to get their uneducated point across only show how ignorant they really are. Try educating yourselves instead of posting your unintelligent comments, opinions and hate. You're part of the reason most people like wildlife more than humans. They're smarter than you and show more control of their emotions.

Orca's are attracted to the sound and motion of boat engines.. You always, ALWAYS turn off the engine when they are near and wait for them to move on. All it takes is one of them to get a little too curious and end up getting hacked to shit by the propeller blades.

A lot of people seem to think that the Orcas wanted to eat the people filming. If that were the case, they had plenty of opportunities, but they just stayed submerged and swam along side. They were playing, not hunting.

“Get closer to it.” If you ever encounter whales or dolphins like this, don’t get closer. Leave them alone. If they approach you, there are some guidelines and, depending where you are, laws in place to protect aquatic mammals like whales, dolphins and seals.

I'm kind of pissed about the fact that when people see ONE shark trailing behind a boat they think "Oh God that's terrifying" or "Dear God those poor people" but when they see AN ENTIRE POD of much larger, far more dangerous and much more uncommon orcas, they think stuff like "Aw, they're just playing" or "I hope they don't hurt themselves on the motor" and "that's so cute." It honestly really shows what a bad reputation sharks get despite not *usually* being much of threat. If orcas were as common as sharks, no one would be treating them like they do now. Orcas are incredible creatures, don't get me wrong. I just personally can say that being tailed and surrounded by a pod of orcas while in a small boat far out at sea is fucking terrifying.

I think schools need to be more educated about different species of animals so they can teach children to know that not every animal is a threat, the animal maybe a carnivore but that doesn't mean it's going to eat everything it sees. Orcas in particular do not eat people or dogs and are actually very sociable animals they often play with humans. Orcas have even been known to rescue people from drowning and shark attacks.

Some nice sequences of orcas surfing in a fast boat's wake. There are other videos on RU-vid similar to this; orcas like to do this sort of thing, just like smaller dolphins. Not a good idea to fish near orcas, who love to steal fish off lines.

+awuma I was fishing off the coast of Cape Cod and had a seal grab a bluefish that I had just caught. At first I thought I must have had a huge Striped Bass on my line. Then he popped his head up with the fish sort of being held by his fins while he was chomping on it like it was a piece of watermelon lol. I was able to free the fish and get control again, until I got it like 10 feet from shore. Then he grabbed it again and I cut the line. Figured he'd earned it.

I don't profess to be an expert, but I do profess to living in Alaska. We experience 10-20 of such interactions a year. The tail slapping at the beginning of the video is often a sign that the whale is uncomfortable or unfamiliar with the situation at hand. However, the rest of the interactions with the whales are benign. Killer whales are incredibly curious, and they love to play in the wake of boats. Further, when the "baby" whales are allowed to approach the boat, it is a sign that the pod is relatively "okay" with the boat's presence. On another note, approaching a group of whales to provoke an interaction is illegal. I don't know if you did this or not. I am merely stating a fact. Though, you did clearly and drastically change your boat's speed several times during the interaction, which is foolish and dangerous. You could have injured one of the whales, and God help you if it had been one of their little ones....because then you really would have had a pod of angry whales, and your boat wouldn't have protected you.
