I agree the title is a bit clickbait ... But the knowledge and know how he just gives away , yess in very long episodes, is just mind boggling. I have been professionaly porting and flowing diesel heads for 20 years,so I can truly say that the info he is giving is mind blowing. He is one of the very few talking e.g. about swirl..... I have been laughed at when preparing a head on the Flowbench ,and customer dropped the jaw when installing a head bolt which protruded in the intake port reduced swirl to almost zero.... That showed him why his home ported head ,and tested by "a guy" with Flowbench just could not work...... It is in the details.... And Banks is a tsunami of this details and know how which will in the end gives you the winning tune....

Unpopular opinion: i got the feeling he was humoring an older gentleman. The older gentleman has a long a storied history of making advances in tech, and built a business out of diesel tuning, but there was nothing in the video that was new information for any high school autoshop student with a decent teacher. This was Mr. Banks listening to himself talk. If his intent was to teach intro to diesel 101, day 1, with someone nodding along, he succeeded. If is intent was to impart new knowledge other than, "I filed 2 new patents, everyone be on the lookout for a new product soon," then he failed.

For someone like myself, that doesn't wrench on a regular basis, I still find this very intriguing and very easy to listen to. No bro science, just passionate discussion on a topic that is essentially the life's work of a man with great enthusiasm for what he does. While I am not a big "science nut" and I rarely can pay attention when I see a discussion take place in a shop where I could literally eat off the floor (I am a big fan of Sloppy Mechanics related material), this man has my full, undivided attention. At the risk of sounding disrespectful, he reminds me of my friends grandfather, an engineer and a very humble man I had great respect for that taught me some amazing things when we were kids. Not sure who would thumbs down such a video, I suppose you have to take into account accidental clicks and, of course, the ever-present morons of the internet world. I know this video made me subscribe.

All this talk about getting cold air into the engine and making power reminds me of some discussions I've had with guys about fuel efficiency in an engine. I've always been of the school that cold air in is still the most efficient, even at partial load. If you're decreasing the density of the air coming in via the under hood temperature, you're making less power at a given throttle and displacement. On my little 4-banger Saturn that I was experimenting with at the time, I looked at the exhaust and the intake systems on that thing and I could see that the major restriction was on the intake side. They were running a pretty big exhaust and a decently designed cast header for the size of that little 1.9L, so I put on a cold air intake to uncork a few more horsepower. At only 2300 lbs, that thing would scoot pretty good, and was certainly as fast as some heavy V6 cars with twice the power that my friends had. A nice side benefit is that I had a 4-5 mpg increase city and almost 10 mpg on the highway by simply slapping on a cold air intake that grabbed air from the fender well just in front of the driver side wheel. I was probably helped by how well that intake flowed, especially in city driving with frequent acceleration events, but I feel that at part throttle like that, which is where your highway mpg comes from, you're not really limited by that intake tube at all. That cooler air was doing all the efficiency gains in my opinion. Now the guys on the forums and my friends I was discussing this with at the time all thought the opposite, that warmer air would be more fuel efficient. I think they were confusing warmer coolant and oil temps with warmer intake temps. Warm intake air is inefficient. Warmer coolant and oil just makes the engine spin more freely, which is why the OEMs do it. It ekes out tenths of an mpg and helps them hit their CAFE standards. You know what I don't see any of the OEMs doing these days, building out fuel-efficient power plants that draw in warm air. They all have cold air intakes right from the factory.

I've tried to explain to people how having the best flowing heads isn't always the best on a carbureted gasoline engine because the fuel doesn't stay mixed as well if the flow is too smooth. Now Gale explains that it matters even when the fuel is injected into the cylinder under high pressure.
@nellyfarnsworth7381

You need to build a two cycle diesel engine. One blower + two turbochargers. When this engine is at 5,000 rpm. The engine will sound like 10,000 rpm. Plus it will move twice as much AIR. TWICE the AIR, TWICE the H.P.
@jdrok5026
@jdrok5026 5 лет назад
Yes but you have 2 firing cyclinders depending on cyclinder count obviously 2 cylinders dont fire with each other. So your still going to need to do a ton of work to improve combustion efficiency something not so easily done with a 2 strokes natural pressure issues.

Now Justin over at R&D is working on the final stages of an in-line style injection pump kit that’s claimed to be capable of over 900hp. What are the weak points in the 6.5’s? Obviously the db2 would have to be modified like the international versions we all use or even an in-line. But I’m guessing the bottom end doesn’t hold up too well?

@@carsonhammond6204 Cranks are weak and the block casting is a weak metal along with the pistons.. They can only handle 15-20 psi of boost after head studs, before studding i wouldnt push past 12psi.. The guy who built the turbos for them built them for more are mass not more boost.. Theres a few guys with around 400 hp 6.5s but they have $4k Optimizer or P400 blocks and heads and better turbos.. We recently lost the P400 blocks which was the stonger of the two due to International stopping the casting of them if i remember correctly.. My truck has the 599 block which is the strongest factory block other than the red blocks that are rare AF... Its got its stock GM-3 turbo that is absolute ass as the GM-series turbos suck due to excess backpressure, and a NV4500 5spd trans.. As far as fuel mods we do better lift pumps and we have a feed the beast system to make the fuel lines going into the FFM bigger and then we get marine injectors and we had a guy who modded the pumps and rebuilt them but he recently found new employment elsewhere so now we are waiting on a stable pump guy for these trucks..

The 6.2L and 6.5L were efficiency engines. That is what they were made for and how they were marketed. At the time Big Blocks were getting like 10mpg average. The 6.2L showed up and more than doubled that. Sure power was abysmal but back in the 80's people didn't care if they had to go up a hill at 20mph with the 4 ways on. Now everyone wants to do 20mph over the speed limit with 20K lbs on the back. Trying to push the 6 2L and 6.5L to even stock Duramax numbers is asking a lot.
@EhBrokenToaster
@EhBrokenToaster 5 лет назад
@@geoffmooregm We have a few people with reliable built 6.5s that equal atock LB7 Dmaxes, the introduction of the new custom made super series turbo has helped a lot.. Also the guy built his own tunes for the trucks. I know these things arent power houses but it sucks that gm just created a crap casting and left it.. The original 'Red Blocks' came from Detroit Diesel themselves.. their casting was much much stronger and could hold a lot more power.. If Gm woulda listened to the Detroit division when they had em the 6.2/5 coulda been a great engine, but GM cheaped out on the fan, waterpump, and block casting making them weaker and bringing more problems to them than what woulda ever showed up... Detroit backed out of the deal once GM started to mess with the design of the block, otherwise the 6.2/5 would prob be considered a Detroit Diesel..

The only thing I can think of that missing in Gale’s videos is the token large breasted bomb shell that discretely walks around the shop with exposed cleave to help accentuate a talking point. Suggestion - As Gale is describing ambient air pressure, temperature, pounds per 1,000 cubic feet and their indelible affect on engine performance - the token busty could hold his pen and point to the engine pieces that contributed to the video outcome. Just a thought...

Mr. Banks I love the Dmax always have, your builds are incredible. Can you please please do a build up of a 5.0 V8 Cummins!! Alot of potential there and I feel like your the true person to see what it's fully capable of and still having fun with the little motor !

The main problem with Cummins Diesels is you can only tune the Mechanical pump so much, where as Duramax fuel systems are controlled by ECU which you can fine tune to perfection.

@@fullboostturbo1 the 5.0 Cummins uses the CP4 like the 6.7PSD and the LML Dmax. It uses the same Piezo injectors the LML used as well. Asides from maybe different nozzles. CFT performance did 800 to the tires with his 5.0 Cummins on the factory CP4..

@@Ryles890 Did not know that thanks for the info update. 800 to the tires out of a 5ltr Cummins WOW.

back in the 70s I worked independent 2 way radio design, installation, maintenance, optimization(picking up crumbs). What I said at the time Motorola gets to eat the cake and we get the crumbs. But, sometimes Motorola is so slothful they sweep the whole cake off on the floor and we get the whole cake.

ive been told you want equal pressure or more pressure on the exhaust side of the turbo so the turbo dosent stall/cavitate with the resitance of intake side

Why would it be theoretically impossible to have a 100% thermal efficiency of an intercooler? Correct me if I'm wrong, given a large enough intercooler (not practical obviously), you could exchange down to the point that the charge air is the same temperature of the cooler's external airflow. If you want to get nitty gritty, pressure drop would actually help thermally since gasses absorb heat when they expand. If you had a very small pressure drop over each inch of intercooler tube (let's say 0.001 PSI), even that slight expansion of gas would absorb a miniscule amount of heat. Granted, pressure drop across the intercooler would decrease air density coming into the cylinders so your overall efficiency would go down, but I'm still stuck on the statement that it's "impossible" to cool air to ambient across any intercooler.

I am pretty sure PWR would test the efficiency of their intercoolers. They Make intercoolers,heat exchanged,oil coolers and Radiators for almost all forms of Motorsport. Formula 1, IndyCar, Nascar etc.

I am wondering why you're not putting the cooler "chiller" on the intake side of the turbo too. It seems that would give you more density and less heat produced by the compressed air from the output side of the turbo. Esenchaly making a cool day effect. IDK if I will ever see your response or if you will even read this, but I sure would like to know.

Please, please, please Gale, take a look at the new 3.0 Liter diesels, coming out, in the light duty trucks. The Big 3 have done a good job, but I know, you and your staff can find us more efficiency. I would bet the "Bank" on it. (pun intended)

With typical air to air intercooler it impossible to get 100% efficiency, but water to air intercooler filled with ice probably will break 100% efficiency barrier

I’d love to talk to gale banks about diesel performance, especially on a Cummins engine, I’m sure id learn more then a thing or 2, on any of the engines (3.0, 5.0, 5.9,6.7) or even the larger truck engines like a 13 or 15L
